Fun fact: this is one of the easier escort missions.

One particular guy on one particular path comes to mind.

I love this game and have played it beginning to end several times over. Such that it was the whole reason I bought a PSP in the first place.

But the times I quit were mostly due to those kinds of missions and suicidal AI.

I mean we are only killing old people, and old people in JRPGs exist only to either die or be bad rear end blind swordsmen. I don't see a oroblem with our choice. :colbert:

Winning this battle only to find Leonar and his troops lying in a pool of their own blood and surrounded by vengeful blind seniors holding sword canes would have been a pretty amazing twist and a great follow up battle.

Nah I can totally buy Vyce not having any strong principles beyond "gently caress DenamLevi, I'm just gonna do the opposite of whatever he does"

It wouldn't be so bad if it was a bit more nuanced and less extreme. He goes from young untested impetuous rebel to either Righteous Indignation Personified or Complete Raging Psychopath.

The first of which makes some sense at least, as who with any moral compass wouldn't look down on a friend who just decided they would be murdering innocents to further their personal agenda?

The latter just smacks of petulance at his friend be the more morally upstanding one, so he... decides to be even less morally upstanding...

I don't really dislike Vyce as an antagonist and foil. That distinction goes to Catiua and her wishy-washy ways. At least Vyce stands for something in each of the major paths. And if we ever only got to see one path to the story(like, say, Delita in FFT), we'd probably assume that's how he was always meant to be; as it's the contrast from both paths that makes him seem all over the place.

Catiua stands as the one stereotypical "woe is me" damsel in a sea of far more interesting and far more badass women.

Also, this is going to sound weird I know considering what we just did, but for me at least, law Denim/Levi came off as more likable then Chaos Denim/Levi.

Same. Much like Vyce on the L route, he's forced to confront a lot about his own convictions(not to mention choices) in a way I feel that makes him a better character.

I'm so glad I only played the old version and never had to deal with this crafting nonsense :v:

You can actually ignore it for the most part if you want. Pretty sure I beat the game the first time without using it at all. By the end of it you can gear up pretty well if you know what you're looking for and kill the right targets.

I do find it weird that you can no longer recruit humanoids like Hawkmen and Lizardmen or monsters such a Golems from cities and can only recruit them from battle.

Still, there's little reason to play the original over this.

There were in Ogre Battle too. Birdman, then level up and High Ali -> Vultan (FLASH! OHHH OHHHHHH!) or Low Ali -> Raven. We'll see Ravens in TO later, they're enemy only recolor classes.

I was somewhat disappointed to find out bird people would have classes in the PSP version only to have them be basic human classes and not a variation of their own classes from previous games.

Still rad to have flying Rune Fencers and Archers tho.

Absurd?! Thanks for the vote of no-confidence Catiua. Why don't you tell our nice comrades of WAR some embarrassing childhood stories while you're at it?

I say we prove her wrong and demonstrate how much better a leader we can be by not assuming leadership and letting the Duke crash and burn.

It always breaks my heart a little bit when I inevitably replace the majority of my handmade guys with the same uniques as always. I have to make a conscious effort not to use them sometimes. Thankfully, they're not as redonkulously broken as some guys in, say, Final Fantasy Tactics.

I think the problem is that a lot of the good generic builds require some planning and investment, whereas most of the unique classes are pretty much good to go or specialized enough that you don't need to go class hopping to get the stuff you need to make them work. Which is great if you know a lot of this beforehand and can prep. I do feel that a lot of stuff is locked unnecessarily way too late in the game.

I will say that monsters are much more viable than before, and having their own set of classes sets them apart and gives them the versatility that a lot of them were missing. The first time I played the PSP remake I recruited a couple of Hawkmen and a Lizardman, as I now had more options with them. Lamias and Orcs are also pretty good, and have access to the aforementioned humanoid-monster-specific classes. Even the larger monsters like Golems and Dragons no longer have the arbitrary limit of only having 2 per battle, plus the added flexibility of changing classes to suit different needs.

Honestly I view it as more sunk cost fallacy then anything else. Having done such a horrible act the MC on the law route will keep on going or else that atrocity would have been for nothing.

The delusion that one is doing things for some higher purpose(whether it be divine or human) is the only way some people can sleep at night with the memory of their acts.

That said...

I think it wouldn't be half as jarring if we didn't know how far the other way he skews should one choose the alternative. If Vyce had been less of an unrepentant maniac in the Chaos path and instead fit closer to the role Denam takes when he chooses Law, then I think he could have been a much better foil.

The more I play this game the more I enjoy Vyce's Law depiction. I feel like his Chaos version veers too close into "moo hoo ha ha" villainy, and thus I can never take him seriously.

I mean, Law Vyce is still a prick. But he's a prick who I can still kind of understand. And it's probably the side of him from which the inspiration for Delita in FFT sprang.
