108 years.

Also almost a century after Mexican independence. loving shameful.

It was set in the 30s wasn't it? One of the running jokes was that Chevy Chase couldn't remember or deliver his lines for poo poo which meant the talkies put him out of work. And that Martin Short was a former child star.

in an ideal world, children would have a customised education that gave harder problems to kids that were good in those disciplines.

We have something like this in NL, different secondary education levels based on skill and motivation. It works, to an extent.

The main criticism is that once the choice is made around grade 7, it's an enormous hassle to change levels, especially going up the ladder delays your education by several years. And the level you finished at strongly dictates what tertiary education or job you can get.

So, if your grades are bad in grade 6 for no reason of your own this can have an effect on the rest of your life.

My daughter has reportedly scored in the 93rd percentile on her state math tests for fifth grade this year, but I’m not going to put her through anything that’s going to give her that “gifted kid” mentality because she does not need to end up like my useless rear end.

[edit] christ, we just got a letter from the school recommending to us that she enter the gifted program for creative thinking

I like to watch CinemaSins and Honest Trailers for all the movies I'm curious about but don't want to watch. It's like Cliff's Notes with commentary notes to use in conversation to "prove you watched it."

I'm this one. Turns out I have an excellent memory, so k-12 was a cake walk for the most part. I crashed and burned in college. I didn't properly learn how to learn by understanding rather than memorization until my late twenties, early thirties maybe. I was in GT, all the AP and honors classes, and graduated with honors and scholarships; but just a big ol dumb dumb in the end.

Say Watt?

College is cool because while newfound independence may keep you from your schoolwork and binge drinking can ruin you for morning classes and part-time work can ruin you for evening classes and anxiety about working towards a degree you don't want can kill any enthusiasm and undiagnosed executive dysfunction will give you guilt ulcers, sometimes you can make some lifelong friends ("lifelong" being that period between college and having kids).

I was in the fun position where I aced all my tests and consistently scored in the 99th percentile on all the big standardized stuff, because tests are actually really easy if you're good at memorizing stuff and get how to guess the right answers on stuff you're not 100% sure of, but my grades were always in the Cs because it's hard to do homework and all the other stuff when your home life is poo poo. Which meant I got into a community college I couldn't finish because we couldn't afford it anyway. But hey my grades were all As when I was living by myself (briefly) so at least I was able to confirm that I'm not secretly dumb as hell. Wheeee

(And then much much later I read that the ancient greeks believed this too for like a thousand years, calling it emission theory, up until someone pointed out that this meant things should be easier to see if more people look at them. So five year old me was at least as smart as the philosopher Empedocles?)

Did five-year-old Tree Bucket figure out why they needed an external source of light in order to see stuff? Seems like “darkness” is a bit of a refutation to emission theory, but the Wikipedia page is strangely silent on this.

I was never considered 'gifted' but I was smart enough to coast through high school without needing to try very hard. Cue me almost flunking out of college twice because I never had to learn how to take notes or study :smith:

They both worked fine for me originally, but I'm running the script from the OP to apply some presets to MP4s, maybe that fixes the audio as well :shrug:

const fixVideos = setTimeout(function(){
  var videos = document.getElementsByTagName('video');
  for(var i = 0; i < videos.length; i++){
    videos[i].removeAttribute('loop');
    videos[i].controls = true;
    videos[i].pause();
    videos[i].currentTime = 0;
    videos[i].volume = 0.2;
    videos[i].muted = false;
  }
}, 500);
