I don't mind the political chat so much in the context of discussing Youtube LP's and the like if it's relevant (like how the PewDiePie / Jontron stuff has affected their subscribers/views/other gigs/whatever). Just be civil and calm about it and don't go straying off the topic of this thread.

At this stage you're better off relying on Patreon or direct donations anyway. Relying on ad revenue is wonky as gently caress considering how god drat chaotic Youtube can be.

So if I watch the loud inept man fumble around incompetently at video games more, I can encourage him to get married to a woman who clearly has no sense. I hope they stream the wedding like that other couple did (at least I hope it was only the one couple that live-streamed their wedding).

I usually watch LPs when I'm eating dinner or want something in the background while I do other things. Plus personally most streams don't really do it for me compared to the polish that goes into a Let's Play. I make an exception for the MDC though because their streams are usually top-notch. Occasionally I'll follow a Gaming Garbage stream as well if I have nothing going on.

And then the MDC streamed themselves playing it. Definitely worth a watch. One | Two

Jamesman posted:What's this now? Asking for money in general is against the sitewide SA rules, mainly to prevent donation scams and drive-by panhandlers. Basically if you have a Patreon, don't post it on SA. Links to videos with the Patreon in the description or your Twitter account or whatever are fine. Honestly I wonder if this should be changed since several forums beyond LP could benefit and Patreon's reasonable for people part of the community, but I also kinda worry about this becoming a sea of Patreon links.

"If you don't like it, don't watch it" is a dumb way to shut down criticism. It's definitely true to a point, i.e. don't needlessly poo poo continuously on something people may enjoy, but at the same time things should be allowed to be critiqued so people can improve, both the people being critiqued and the people who may want to incorporate the advice in their own projects.

Some of the Patreon-funded channels I follow wait until the end of the video to acknowledge and thank their Patrons. End of a stream may not always work, but at least thanking new subscribers from the last stream at the start of the current stream would include that sense of involvement without distracting during the stream.

Encouraging people to donate to feel included seems scummy to me, even though I know most streamers aren't intentionally doing so. People should donate to reward/thank the streamer, not for community.

What about speedrunners? They pull off technically impressive stuff in an entertaining manner, and it's hard to really replicate that outside video games. I kinda relate general game streamers to sitcoms. There's a lot of terrible ones that probably don't deserve the views/money they get, but there's a few that are good that put effort into things and/or have natural charisma and can make anything charming. And of course who is "deserving" is a huge manner of debate depending on one's tastes, and I doubt even this thread would ever come to consensus on which streamers are "good". Streaming's really not my thing, but if people enjoy watching and funding them, then who gives a poo poo what I think?

But I dont think it justifies the prevalent hardline attitude this subforum had towards monetization for years because hey why not make $13, everyone here probably uses ad blocker anyway. I think most of those people left SA and now make money on Twitch.

The other weird thing is how varied LPs can tackle a game. There are LPs that alter/build stories around the games being covered, LPs that are in-depth critiques on the games being covered, LPs that involve modifications to games whether by the LPers themselves or by others, and so on. How do you begin to sort through all that?

Somewhat related since it's the main way Youtube content creators make their money now, Patreon is going to bump up their fees for paying patrons, adding a service fee of 2.9% of a pledge plus 35 cents. So a $1 pledge will now cost a patron $1.38 or so. Patreon says this will help its artists understand how much they'll be making (since before the fees were taken from the artist's monthly sum) while giving them a larger percentage of fees (95% of the pledged money compared to ~90% before). However, many artists are concerned that this will discourage smaller pledges, as many rely on many low-dollar pledges to stay afloat, and those who make many small donations a month will now have to either pay more or cut some of those projects. There's been a lot of people pleading with Patreon to reconsider their case, but honestly I can't see any reason why they would. They're the big game in town, and content creators rely way too much on them at this point to influence their bottom line. So it's basically Youtube all over again. Good luck to those who rely on Patreon, I guess! Better think up a Plan C in case Patreon gets worse in the next couple years.
