One of my favorite things in the world is job requests for free work, either through my own website or Craigslist. Model Mayhem is also great for delusional idiots & wannabes. Similar to the Ideas Guy in bitcoin, everyone has a great opportunity for you, you just need to work for free indefinitely and you'll definitely get paid at some undefined point in the future, or this will turn into a paying job. There's such a fascinating element of hubris to these jerkoffs; they call it an internship even though you're doing everything an employee does, for free.

Search your local craigslist gigs section for 'unpaid intern', and see what comes up. Post text or screenshots, most ads get flagged fairly quickly. The other thing to look for is TF/TFP/TFCD, for whatever reason people think this is a magic incantation that gets professionals to work for free.

As a sister thread to Assistant Horror Stories, this thread is equal parts ridicule and education because no matter your skill level your work has value, it is them who are wrong. Just because they don't want to pay someone doesn't make it an internship or a good opportunity. The textbook (and legal) definition of an intern is someone who knows absolutely nothing about a profession, is working for free in order to learn, doesn't replace a paid employee and in most cases would be a hindrance to the professional. Any 'internship' where they want you to have expert level skills or professional grade equipment is actually a job, and you should be getting paid for it.

I live in the greater NYC area, so this kind of nonsense is endemic to the creative industries, but there's also a lot of exploitation by other creative people. Cannibalizing your own kind is unforgivable.

We are a photography studio based in Westchester County shooting over 100 events a year. For a Bat Mitzvah we are shooting on April 1 from 7pm-11pm, the client is not paying for a 2nd shooter but is requesting an intern/apprentice type photographer to come along for added coverage.
If you are passionate about photography, own your own equipment, and are interested in building your event experience and portfolio - please contact us with a link to some samples of your work and a short bio about yourself.
Potential for future 2nd shooter paid gigs based on your work, personality, and work ethic.

Well dressed at event a must.
no pay:

This is a classic example. They need a second shooter, but they don't want to pay for one, and they're too spineless to demand the client pay for one. But they also need them to be good, hence why they're vetting your portfolio. Guess what, you don't get a second shooter!

Or, if you're a huge cynical rear end in a top hat like me, you will apply for this job and play along until you cancel the night before. This is the only way shitlords will learn.

Hello!

Thought to put this out here in case there is someone looking for this type of role (What you are seeking for is also seeking you right? Rumi quote).

Am on the hunt for a student photographer who is interested in building their portfolio/resume and also looking to receive internship credit through their University. I need assistance in developing a circulation of photos for my Instagram brand and I was hoping there might be a few individuals on here that have an eye or this kind of thing. Think glamorous mixed with girl next door vibe. Bohemian yet modern and very real. These photos will be yours to feature in your portfolio in exchange for your help with taking them. Instagram trends are predicting we are moving away from perfectly curated photos to something more real and yet still very aesthetically pleasing that people can relate to. If you have an inspiring IG account or portfolio and are interested in this kind of partnership, please do share and I would love to hear from you! Thanks all.

no pay:

A good red flag is someone who insists on a 'student' anything. Plus, to do a real internship program you have to register with a university and go through an entire application process. 'Instagram fashion blogger' is always a red flag too. Nothing says authentic like hiring someone else to produce all your content for you.

My rule of thumb for free work is only if I get complete creative control, it's something I would do anyway, and if it's non commercial. Dalia here is obviously angling to monetize their #brand, that's already a no-go, if they were doing it for fun they wouldn't be trying to get a student to produce professional level posts. Which brings us to creative control: since Dalia wants to tell me exactly what they want and how to do it, that's going to cost them. I'll photograph my macchiato for myself, all day, for free; when someone else wants me to shoot their espresso in line with their #brand identity, get your loving wallet out.

These clowns have been reposting this ad for at least 3 years. When I lived in Philadelphia they reached out to me to pitch working for them as an intern, and also that as part of that internship not only was I on-call to shoot their 'artists' for any usage & licensing they wanted for free, they needed a key and 24/7 access to my studio. Which I lived in as a live/work loft space. They were very mad when I laughed & refused, their posts for a few months afterwards included references to Haters Trying To Hold [Them] Back. Also how can you be up & coming and full-fledged at the same time?

Experienced Sailing and Video Production Crew needed for documentary-style travelogue around nautical NYC.
Emphasis on the legends and landmarks of forgotten NYC maritime history along with local color, cuisine, & nightlife.
Additional interests covered will include the science, art, & folklore of NYC as a shipping port.
Experienced Captain serves as the program Host.

Each show will be shot using fixed and handheld cameras (drone experts encouraged) aboard a vintage sailboat moored in Manhattan with additional segments on land.
Destinations include Coney Island, the Rockaways, Sandy Hook, LI Sound, and numerous islands in and around NYC to name a few.

Filming began 2015 and we had an incredible start. We're looking to add to our crew roster and finish the pilot this season. Once a solid pilot has been filmed our goal is to be picked up by a national network. Looking to shoot land features ASAP and begin regular shoots on the water during the sailing season of 2017 (May-Oct). There is no monetary compensation at this time, however some food and beverage will be provided as well as an amazing summer on the water!

If you are a serious, professional 25+ year old with a can-do attitude, intrinsic understanding of the word 'teamwork', and a thirst for adventure, please see the list below. First consideration will be given to those with Sailing crew experience*. In your response, please include any talents, skills, and equipment that you'd be willing to put into service for the project - GoPro camera, drone, screenwriting skills, etc.

Due to logistics of being confined aboard a sailboat, we'll need to limit total crew onboard to 6 or less per sail.
Because of this, all aboard will need to wear multiple hats - meaning at minimum every crew member has two jobs.
Preference will be given to those who can do three or more of the below.
Landlubbers (those with no sailing desire or the inconsolably seasick) are also needed for pre & post production duties.

My favorite was by a guy looking for album artwork (the theme was to recreate an iconic Billy Joel cover), for free, pleading poverty, no budget, etc. But if you googled his name, it turns out he had recently successfully funded a kickstarter to the tune of around $40k, one of the stated goals was to pay for professional photography for album artwork & a music video.

Hi, yes, I found a professional photographer who'll do a shittonne and pay an assistant for $300. Which is why I'm here offering you, an amateur, the same amount for less work overall (but still a poo poo tonne). No, I'm not full of poo poo, why do you ask.

I like that he brags about spending loads of money, and tries to use his poor budgeting skills to guilt trip you into it.

It's either a bluff, or a lovely undercutter who cannot possibly deliver. The best response is "I Double-loving-Dog Dare you to hire that guy." I have done this before; I put in a bid for a product job for a t-shirt company, and some guy from Delaware offered to do the job for free and even pay for the studio rental etc out of pocket, just to 'build his portfolio'. Surprise surprise, a month later the proofs they got were poo poo, called me back, and balked when my estimate increased by 50%.

I've also gotten pleas of poverty from clients, only to check their social media where their most recent activity is bragging about buying a $100k+ car.

We get a lot of poo poo like this in Houston. Every 19 year old who lives near the city thinks they are going to be a rapper, rap promoter, or some job title that strings together words like "manager" "promoter" and "Aesthetic" except they usually spell it "ascetic." For some reason, Friday afternoons tend to be the time they all congregate and more than once, some dipshits have stopped city traffic so they can get shots of a model in club wear standing in the middle of a busy intersection.

The same guy has a job up on meetaphotographer.com and while not as detailed, he is still specifying that you need an HD camera to make HD photos and take HD movies. The Bryan Rawlins Brand wants nothing to do with standard definition!

My brand is still new but I'm trying to make it a multifaceted organization that is a platform for artists to be themselves with no restrictions. I can explain better later, but I need to know you're interested in joining me on the journey to the top first.

I don't mind emails, but it's better to text me.

This is not a "Pay me for my services" thing, it's a team work thing. We'll make money as a team, split it as a team and celebrate our victories at a team. So if you're looking at this as me trying to pay you to be a part of the team... please don't message me.

Weird how this undecided, 'all around creative type' knows exactly who else needs to work for free, indefinitely, so their brand succeeds

Is there any way to know what the take up rate on these offers is? I guess unless you know someone in the org or keep seeing the same ad over and over again, it would be hard to guess accurately, but my feeling is that there probably are a lot of people lining up to shoot for free. Especially for low overhead stuff like the fashion one above.

I would imagine there's a lot, but at the same time i'll see the same ad posted over and over. So either they're getting flagged and reposting, or they're getting a ton of subpar work from hacks and they're chasing the excellent work/free unicorn. The only thing they're losing is time, really.

Established photographer in bushwick looking for a cool sidekick. I need an apprentice that I can show the ropes of the business. Looking for someone I can take on shoots and someone I can train. I have a very unique style of editing and I am willing to teach this to my apprentice. Preferably looking for someone still in school but anyone who has the passion for photography and is energetic works just the same. We will be meeting once a week on the weekend for several hours, but must be able to commit 3-4 hours a week with editing and skype meetings in addition to the day. You will also be shooting (extras, behind the scenes, etc.) So you will be required to be onsite with shoots at various locations. This person will need to have their own camera and laptop/computer. You will be utilizing the Adobe suite of editing software, which will be supplied to you if you do not already have it.

THIS IS AN UNPAID APPRENTICESHIP

This skills I will be teaching you, is what you will be getting in exchange for your services assisting with my processes. This apprenticeship is designed to take you to the next level, teaching you industry standard methods and procedures in both shooting and editing. This position will give you an understanding of the setup-shooting-editing-delivery workflow in practical, real-world, money-making scenarios.

In addition to industry standard work, I do a lot of conceptual photography which I will also be teaching to this apprentice. You can see this and my industry standard work on my website MVMETZ.COM, or my INSTAGRAM: mikeVmetz.

In your response please tell me about yourself, your current level/experience and long term goals in photography, as well as why you think you would be a good apprentice. I also want to see your current skillset so please submit 3-4 photos of, yes that’s right the hardest subject of all, yourself! These should be images that you have shot yourself, (not selfies holding the camera) but actual photos using either the camera timer or remote control. At least one of the photos should be edited in some way, either creatively, or standard tweaking.

This guy is great because the photos accompanying the ad are firmly in the HDR/babby's first multiple exposure self-portrait phase, and somehow he needs an unpaid intern for thoroughly mediocre work.

Hello,

I am a blogger looking for a photographer for sometime tomorrow afternoon. I am looking for this specifically :

1. No more than $50 charge per look. I am an up and coming blogger so I don't have a lot of money for photography yet.

2. Be able to send me your Instagram account with pictures you've done so I can see your work. I will NOT respond if you've got no prior work to show.

3. Be able to send me the raw images the same day. It's frustrating to feel like you are begging a photographer for your own pictures.

I am able to do minimum two looks, maximum of three per shoot.

Anytime from 3PM-5:30PM will work great tomorrow

Photographer with large, cool studio LOOKING FOR intern/assistant (Farmingdale)

compensation: $50 per gig to assist

So here's the deal. I'm a photographer with a brand new and very cool studio. You don't have to believe me. Come and meet me and see the room. I've got an amazing selection of lighting and modifiers, a lot of grip and gear that makes a shoot flow and get things done simply, a great vibe, and a lighting guy (me) that concentrates on lighting and the manipulation of light to create beautiful and dynamic images.

The studio had a dedicated area for headshots, 2 additional shooting zones that adapt and change per the shoot, and a large area to shoot full length fashion.

Right. Now you want to know about pay. If you're excited about photography and learning how to better use gear, as well as hanging out in a cool studio with a pretty cool photographer, then this may a good deal for you. I can't pay a salary and I'm not looking for someone that will put in any set hours. As an intern that wants to learn, you can be here whenever I'm here, which is most of the time, and you can be present on some photo shoots. As an assistant, I'll need you to help out on large agency shoots that go for about 8 hours, usually on a Saturday. In addition to the experience you'll get, I'll pay you $50 cash the day of the shoot. I love to have fun, so even though we work hard, we have fun and always create great photos.

If any of this sparks your interest and you'd like to see the studio, give me a call or send a message.

You can see some of my work on my website: http://robertmitchellphotography.com

"hanging out in a cool studio' as a form of payment :negative:

Even the cheapest, shittiest hacks know that an assistant is invaluable, and clients absolutely pay attention to the quality of assistants. Also, it's only like $200 per day for a reasonably competent assistant.
