I'd love to take a moment to tell you about my all-time favorite game: Contract Bridge. I think it's perfect for goons. It's empirically better than any other competitive card game, and I'll tell you why: Contract Bridge is the chess of card games. The strategy goes on infinitely, to this day people are still coming up with deeper and deeper strategies for the game of bridge. If you like card games, and you like chess, there is no reason why you wouldn't have loads of fun playing contract bridge. I'll start with describing the rules and resources soon, but first THE SELL: Contract bridge is better than any other card game because of "duplication" What is duplication? Basically, in competitive bridge, everybody in the room gets the same cards. You aren't scored based on how many points you get, but rather how many people you score higher than. So there's no "bad beats": The lousiest hand in the world has just as much opportunity to "win big" as the best hand possible. Think of it like this: You're playing poker, and you draw a 7-2 offsuit. Normally that's an obvious fold. But since everybody in the room is also folding that exact same hand, you'd score 50% of the points, instead of a 0, because everyone got the same result. If you somehow managed to bluff someone into folding, you wouldn't just win the blinds, you'd get points over every single other person in the room who just folded. That is one of the two key points that has made bridge irresistible to me for the past 25 years. The other is partnership. It's a unique, and often hilarious challenge, trying to communicate the value of the thirteen bridge cards using bids. The biggest obstacle to learning bridge is that there's an initial steep learning curve involved in learning the rules, but if you've ever played a game that involves taking tricks, you're halfway to Bridgetown. There are two parts of playing a bridge hand: 1. The Auction 2. The Play 1. The Auction If you've ever played spades, you're 100% caught up with how this works. First of all, bridge is a partnership game: At each table are two sets of partners, competing against each other. First, deal the entire deck out evenly, so each player gets 13 cards. That set of 13 cards is called a player's "hand"" The auction involves players "bidding" to arrive at a "contract." Bidding involves making a statement as to how many "tricks" you can take (essentially how many rounds of cards you can win, and the suit which will be "trump" (more on trump later). Instead of bidding, you can also pass. Once three people pass in a row, the last bid hand become the "contract," which means the partnership that bid it has to make that many tricks, while the other pair has to prevent them. That's a really glib way of summarizing what is one of the most involved parts of card gaming, so don't be intimidated if it doesn't fully click. We're just trying to get an overview of how everything proceeds. 2. The Play After the auction is the play. As mentioned, each player has 13 cards. Each player plays a card, and the highest card takes that round, this is known as a "trick." Since there are 13 cards in each players' hand, there will be 13 rounds, or tricks, played. One person plays a card to start each "round," and the other players must play a card in the same suit. If a player has no cards remaining in the suit, they can either discard a card in another suit, or win the trick by playing a trump suit card (remember, trump suit is determined in the auction portion). http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net... Chipper is where it's at, though I think that card game is pretty much localized to about 2 or 3 counties in West Central Wisconsin. Other then the Android app I wrote to play it.

I'm not an expert on gambling addiction or anything but I can just kind of tell that I'm much less susceptible to that high than some of my friends and family members. I'm not sure if it's just because I'm good at math and have had statistics classes or something but it just doesn't seem to sink in with some people that if there was any way to consistently beat the house none of the poo poo would be open for business. And the longer you play the worse it gets.
