Hey, I know Mega Man and I know Zero, what the hell is this?

The Mega Man Zero series is a collection of four Game Boy Advance games released between 2002 and 2005 that take place over a hundred years after the more traditionally popular X series on the SNES and PlayStation. In the century since Sigma's defeat and the end of the Maverick Wars, the world has changed, and a much more violent four-year war reduced the human and Reploid populations to next to nothing. What remained of civilization relocated to the last safe haven on earth, the megacity Neo Arcadia, where its residents were protected from outside threats. But in this series, it's not the outside they should be afraid of...

Moving from console to handheld was a tricky move, and resulted in the loss of two face buttons that were very actively being used by both the SNES and PS1, so some of the button combinations get a little... funky. But Zero has to manually equip different base weapons, and doesn't necessarily win new ones from boss fights, so the issue isn't as severe as it might seem at first. Awkward to get used to, though.

Oh, also Zero looks different because they got a new artist. I like it. The X series was making them look fat.

So what's the deal with this run?

This set of four is actually the 38th, 39th, 42nd, and 44th games in an ongoing series called The Mega Let's Play which outside of this explanation will mostly not be relevant to the playthrough. The ending of the videos will usually refer to a playthrough of Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun we're also doing, but that's not important. Long story short, we've been playing every Mega Man game in release order since the start of 2015, and we've arrived at the first series in the franchise with an actual ending. No special rules, no explicit goals (other than like... you know, win), and no idea how long it'll take or what new poo poo we'll uncover.

Which version of the Zero series will you be playing?

We will be playing the original Game Boy Advance games (as opposed to Mega Man Zero Collection on the Nintendo DS) by way of the fantastic RetroN 5. Collection doesn't really offer us anything useful in terms of the Let's Plays, and recording GBA footage from the RetroN 5 is fuckjillions higher quality than recording DS footage from our modded 3DS.

Are you playing these games one after the other?

No, not all of them. Since we're in the middle of playing a shitload of Mega Man games in release order, Mega Man Zero and Zero 2 will come one after the other, but Zero 3 and Zero 4 will come after one or more non-Zero games, which won't be included in this thread.

Odds are I'm inevitably going to be stuck rescuing John, Ben, Lindsay, and the rest of our team from this, so here we go:

John doesn't swing 'round these parts, and I've already played through the Zero series in high school, so spoilers are fine, so long as they're marked!

Excited to see this, the Zero series is the one Megaman series I've actually played.

Probably several months too early to be asking this, but any plans on covering ZX and ZX Advent?

Absolutely! I'll probably make a new thread for ZX/ZXA so they get a chance to breathe on their own :) It'll be a while before we get there though, especially because we'll be playing Mega Man X: Command Mission on the channel first, so... probably in the fall sometime?

The difference between a Reploid and a Mechaniloid is that Mechaniloids are built to follow their programming and Reploids are built to decide for themselves what to do.

Also Mechaniloids don't tend to be humanoid at all.

Pretty much they are true Robots while Reploids have emotions and such.

Well based off his design. Chill Penguin is a Reploid as well.

I am fond of the Mythos Reploids that serve as the bosses for Zero. (Called mythos cause their designs are based on mythology.)

Yeah. I'm really used to reploids from the Zero series and ZX series so I tend to forget that Reploids aren't just human robots and that there are or were Animal-like reploids.

Well gently caress me, guys, I don't know how I managed to go the entire last week without updating this thread -- I got pretty sick in the middle of the week but I thought I was keeping this up to date.

So for those looking to get the leg up, here we go. tl;dw: We take down three Guardians and two more of their liuetenants over the course of ~85 minutes. We make bad jokes. It's a thing, don't focus on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrPsEnTD4HQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYIHLImrclA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M1HGi5pLOs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDD4nex2MX0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abm_ePmlKvA

I will definitely be doing my damnedest not to let that happen again, sorry about that everyone. There's another episode coming in about 2 hours, too, and we finished recording the rest of the gameplay last night, so we're starting to make our way to the end!

As far as the "Reploid"/"Mechaniloid" distinction goes, it seems like it's a combination of whether a robot was built with X's basic specs in mind, and if that robot has any semblance of free will versus required orders. It doesn't have to be humanoid to be a Reploid, but it helps.

It gets a little murkier in ZX where humans and Reploids are nearly the same (finally merging by the time of Legends), but they add a new class of characters referred to amusingly as "Mega Men", who have the ability to use those games' Biometals.

I'm not sure how this carries over to the other games, but I just played through the collected version again recently, and if you go into the menu, there's a option for controls. I think it's....Type C? There's one that lets you switch between the main and sub weapon by pressing R, instead of having to hold it down. Makes it a lot easier to switch between weapons and charge them up, since you don't have to hold a button down to use the weapon, then hold another button down to charge it.

There's also a control scheme that has the r button as the sub weapon button. Just press the r button and you use your sub weapon, no need to hold r and press b to use it.

Yeah, we tried out the three Types, ultimately stuck with the RetroN-altered scheme we have. In Zero 2 we might try mixing it up again, but we'll see.

And in today's video, we're heading back into the desert (again) to deal with an ice monster. Wait, what?

Well, you're not doing all the "sidequests" and grinding weapon levels or E-Crystals to raise all the elves.

For the most part, the weapon levels came pretty naturally (outside the Shield Boomerang, I think we got everything to max-minus-one stars?), but yeah, I think for future stuff we're gonna do a BIT of grinding so Cyber Elves can make our lives easier.

savixeon
Oct 22, 2016
And honestly even with grinding enough e-crystals to level up all of the cyber-elves, getting all cyber-elves, and maxing out your weapons, the game doesn't get that much longer. My normal mode file where I did all of that and finished the game is only a little over 12 hours long.

In Mega Man Zero 2, a year has passed (in real life too, waohhhhhhhhh) and Zero has been wandering the desert in Bass.EXE's duds, fighting blue X-like mooks that keep chasing him despite the fact that he's kicking their asses. After taking down a particularly large scorpion Mechaniloid, Zero collapses and is rescued by the current leader of Neo Arcadia, Guardian Harpuia. Harpuia drops Zero off near the new Resistance Base, where Elpizo has been selected as Commander of the Resistance. But his reluctance to believe in Ciel's alternative energy solution leads him into a full-frontal assault on Neo Arcadia that he may not win.

savixeon

It's nice to see you guys start on 2 and I have to say that the opening stage for 2 is one of my favorites due to the way they show the player how the one year of constant fighting has taken its toll on Zero. Zero is constantly in his damaged sprite throughout the level even when you have full health, the pause menu itself has taken a fair amount of damage, and he only has the saber and his buster at their base level with no other weapons. All of that along with the few images shown at the start paint a picture of a powerful warrior worn down by constant battle and I love it.

On the subject of cyber elves, using them doesn't make the game harder, it makes it easier. Which is why the only punishment for using them is a point deduction in your end of level score which can give you a lower rank. Of course having a lower rank means that you won't get ex skills in 2 and 3 but that's all it means. And about ex skills, they aren't new weapons that you can get from bosses, they are weapon skills that you can use. They don't really make the game easier and you actually end up making the game more difficult for yourself if you try to get them, since you will need to keep your rank at A rank or above and when you do that the bosses get extra moves to use doing their fight. They're nice if you get them but I wouldn't suggest you guys try to go after them.

Ah, now it gets pretty neat. Good proof of concept in the first game and they iterated on it pretty well.

I think every elf that gets used ends up counting for rank, and maybe it's the next game that actually lets you equip elves for passive bonuses without hurting your rank? Not sure how well I'm remembering there.

Yep, Zero 3 has satellite elves which you can equip to get the benefits without using the elf and hurting your rank. And Zero 4 has an entirely different system for the elves.

To be fair to it. You were kind of rushing and using the weaker weapon when it was not needed.

I remember understanding the cyber elf system pretty easily when I started but I'm not sure how much of that was the game explaining it i a way I could understand and how much of it was the game guides I was reading to find all of the cyber elves.

Also the cyber elf mechanic never seemed like a core mechanic to me. It always seemed to be a thing to do on the side since I never used elves unless I had to to unlock something, which I think was only in this game.

Being able to charge it from the beginning doesn't really make them easier, it just makes it so you don't need to waste time grinding out the weapon levels.

Well yeah it's not great design and it's good they got rid of it; but assuming most people didn't just sit there grinding them out at the start, the lack of charge makes bosses a lot tougher (not to mention Zero 1's punishing continue system meant you rarely fought them at full health).
