I work on super secret stuff and contrary to what Silicon Valley says we are at least 35 years away from fully autonomous cars and that's counting if we rebuild our entire infrastructure (we won't)

Powershift posted:35 years sounds very wrong considering the rate of technology. Consider the number of people that are in America with cars and the pace at which America is willing to upgrade infrastructure, then look at all the people who have very cheap cars and no way to afford a newer car which means there would have to be another Cash 4 Clunkers 2: Automatic Boogaloo Obviously the parts will get cheaper but people will still refuse to switch for reasons

Powershift posted:I discussed this at length in the EV thread, you're thinking too small, and thinking too traditionally. Oh yeah Mass Transit will hopefully get huge because of automation but I was speaking primarily about individual automobiles and the car culture that Americans have and perpetuate since so many Americans buy into the "you aren't a real man until you have a car" etc

Powershift posted:Taxi companies in north america built their business on regulatory capture, and it's hilarious to see them panic as they lose their grip. For decades they've provided lovely service at a high price and used their control of government to prevent supply from ever meeting demand. on the other hand Uber is a lovely company run by lovely people and I can't wait to watch it blow up

the tech will be around in the next 15 years, the cost will go down 15 years after that, and they'll finally give automated traffic their own lane five or ten years after that

Powershift posted:I can't believe people are posting on the internet from their phone while sitting on the toilet talking about how slow technology is going to move. there is a massive, massive different between developing hardware and software that accept commands and perform actions vs developing software that is supposed to resemble a human's thought process or accept 200 data inputs and be able to make a split second decision like ya the CPUs are getting there or already there to be able to process it but getting software to do the same thing is a whole different level

here in southeast michigan we have 1 (maybe two) lovely bus systems that cover only a tiny portion of the metro area so it can take several hours to go 15 miles and require multiple bus transfers

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:LOL the Democrats / progressives aint got poo poo on conservatives for hate and name calling. Mostly because for conservatives, that's all they got as their lifeviews have been well and truly debunked by rational arguments. Democrats do subscribe to the "I'm intolerant of intolerance" thing and it bit them in the rear end when they refused to listen to a massive chunk of the country who has some misguided ideas but still need help

It costs McDonald's pennies to make the burgers that they sell for $2-$4 and each store sells hundreds of them a day. But employees don't know that. McDonald's and everyone else can absolutely afford to give their employees a higher wage.

PaintVagrant posted:Great news for Delta, as they cancelled something like 4,000 flights this weekend and hosed up a LOT of peoples travel plans. It was partially because of weather in Atlanta (I think). I ended up taking my mom to the airport 3 times over 2 days, and she spent the night in the airport waiting for flights. That's 800mil$, not 80mil
