Statement by Philip Lowe, Governor: Monetary Policy Decision Number2017-07 Date4 April 2017

At its meeting today, the Board decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 1.50 per cent.

Conditions in the global economy have improved over recent months. Both global trade and industrial production have picked up. Labour markets have tightened in many countries. Above-trend growth is expected in a number of advanced economies, although uncertainties remain. In China, growth is being supported by higher spending on infrastructure and property construction. This composition of growth and the rapid increase in borrowing mean that the medium-term risks to Chinese growth remain. The improvement in the global economy has contributed to higher commodity prices, which are providing a significant boost to Australia’s national income.

Headline inflation rates have moved higher in most countries, partly reflecting the higher commodity prices. Core inflation remains low. Long-term bond yields are higher than last year, although in a historical context they remain low. Interest rates have increased in the United States and there is no longer an expectation of additional monetary easing in other major economies. Financial markets have been functioning effectively.

The Australian economy is continuing its transition following the end of the mining investment boom. Recent data are consistent with ongoing moderate growth. Most measures of business confidence are at, or above, average and non-mining business investment has risen over the past year. At the same time, some indicators of conditions in the labour market have softened recently. In particular, the unemployment rate has moved a little higher and employment growth is modest. The various forward-looking indicators still point to continued growth in employment over the period ahead. Wage growth remains slow.

The outlook continues to be supported by the low level of interest rates. Lenders have recently announced increases in mortgage rates, particularly those paid by investors. Financial institutions remain in a good position to lend. The depreciation of the exchange rate since 2013 has also assisted the economy in its transition following the mining investment boom. An appreciating exchange rate would complicate this adjustment.

Inflation remains quite low. Headline inflation is expected to pick up over the course of 2017 to be above 2 per cent. The rise in underlying inflation is expected to be a bit more gradual with growth in labour costs remaining subdued.
Conditions in the housing market continue to vary considerably around the country. In some markets, conditions are strong and prices are rising briskly. In other markets, prices are declining. In the eastern capital cities, a considerable additional supply of apartments is scheduled to come on stream over the next couple of years. Growth in rents is the slowest for two decades.

Growth in household borrowing, largely to purchase housing, continues to outpace growth in household income. By reinforcing strong lending standards, the recently announced supervisory measures should help address the risks associated with high and rising levels of indebtedness. Lenders need to ensure that the serviceability metrics that they use are appropriate for current conditions. A reduced reliance on interest-only housing loans in the Australian market would also be a positive development.

Taking account of the available information, the Board judged that holding the stance of monetary policy unchanged at this meeting would be consistent with sustainable growth in the economy and achieving the inflation target over time.
By RBA standards a savage attack on the banking sector and a serious note of warning to employers to share the profits more. Clearly Bolt is right and the left do control everymathing.

Speaking of the 'pub test':

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-04-04/scott-morrison-refuses-provide-economic-modelling-company-tax/8414338

quote:

Scott Morrison refuses to provide economic modelling for Government's company tax cuts By political reporter Ashlynne McGhee Updated 27 minutes ago

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison has declined to detail the economic modelling of his Government's company tax cuts because he says it does not matter to people in the pub. When pressed, Scott Morrison and his office could not provide any economic modelling for the package that passed the Senate on Friday. "If you go down to the pub and talk to small business people, they're not talking about econometric models," he said. "The Government doesn't need to be convinced about the need to give small and medium-sized businesses a tax cut. The Turnbull Government knows how business works, we focus on the things we know make a difference because of our life experience and our background in business."

The Government last week secured tax cuts for businesses with a turnover of up to $50 million, after prolonged negotiations with the Senate crossbench. Labor would only support tax cuts for businesses with a turnover of up to $2 million. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has refused to say whether his party will repeal the legislation if it wins the next election. "We've seen the Government giving up trying to prove there will be jobs created and said go down to the pub and talk to people about business tax cuts," he said. "I was in a pub in Proserpine yesterday. No-one came up to me in the pub and said 'just vote for the $50 billion corporate tax giveaway'." $50 billion refers to the cost of the Government's full tax cut package, which did not pass the Senate.

Mr Morrison says the Government remains committed to that package, which involves cutting the tax rate to 25 per cent for all businesses over the next decade. The Senate has so far refused to support it, but it is the only package the Government has commissioned economic modelling for. "Our modelling was done on the entire tax package," he said. "[The entire package] lifts the GDP by 1 per cent permanently(!). "We remain committed to the entire package and our modelling is done on the entire package."
Well I will be nailing my thighs to the couch waiting for that to trickle down to me. It was so sad watching Trampballs and Morristooge this morning desperately trying to use this to throw egg on Shorten. Just how is he relevant here? It's beyond pathetic.

quote:

Reserve Bank stuck between rock and a hard place on interest rates ANALYSIS By business editor Ian Verrender Updated about 3 hours ago

Don't expect any movement in official interest rates for the foreseeable future, for the Reserve Bank has found itself trapped. Concerned by a deterioration in the jobs market, it would dearly love to chisel off another quarter of a percentage point in official rates. (Jobs and growth!) That, however, would only add fuel to an already flaming hot eastern states property market that in the past year has belligerently cast aside any attempt to come to heel. The statement that accompanied today's decision to keep rates on hold — the eighth month in succession — contained the usual bland language for which central bankers are renowned. It is a language of observation rather than comment, devoid of colour and emotion. But it is fair to say that issues are only ever raised if they are of concern or at least noteworthy. When it comes to jobs, higher unemployment and modest jobs growth were mentioned, a step up in the rhetoric from last month. Clearly a worry.

But it was housing, the topic du jour, where the statement really got down to business.

This time last year, the RBA was in total denial about the rapidly inflating east coast housing market, underway at that time for three years, despite huge price rises, and near record auction clearance rates. There are no such delusions now. And it today laid out the conundrum it is facing. Property prices are rocketing with rises of 19 per cent in Sydney and 16 per cent in Melbourne, along with solid gains in Hobart and Canberra, mostly driven by investors. It would dearly love to bring that under control, to stop household debt soaring in the stratosphere; debt that is far outpacing income growth. In ordinary times, it would lift rates a notch, perhaps even two. But there is a huge supply of units, estimated at around 150,000, about to hit the market within the next year or so.

Should the Reserve Bank choke off that investor demand, the apartment glut could trigger big price falls. That may help solve the affordability problem, but the fallout from a serious property market slump would tip us into recession.(Jobs and growth!) There has probably never been a more difficult period to be Reserve Bank governor, something Philip Lowe now must be acutely aware of. These are extraordinary times. It is now increasingly obvious that all the regulators — the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and the Reserve Bank of Australia — are now furiously working in tandem behind the scenes to cool investor lending. So far, it hasn't worked. That's prompted the ASIC boss Greg Medcraft, who openly calls eastern states housing a bubble, to go on the front foot, warning about the perils of poor lending standards. That from a man who had a front row view of the American property market meltdown that caused the global financial crisis.

In the interim, the RBA is content to let the commercial banks do the heavy lifting, to pull back on property investor loans, although not too hard. The banks aren't complaining. After being told to restrict lending, they've now been given carte blanche to raise investor home loan rates out of the Reserve Bank cycle. And they're loving it. They've boosted margins, earnings momentum is back on track. They profited hugely by inflating the boom. Now they're making hay by helping rein it in.
That was the measured commentary. Out in the wilds of the track less fact less newscorpse mediascape we have Lowe being accused of having an activist agenda and being much more outspoken than his predecessor. Lowe has no choice but be activist he has been forced here by an inactive treasurer and Prime Minister. Call to phase out lead bullets at shooting ranges Women of child-bearing age are at particular risk
Date: April 5, 2017
Source: RMIT University

Summary: While there is no safe level of lead exposure, US health bodies regard 5 micrograms per deciliter of blood as the level that is cause for concern. This research finds that people using shooting ranges can record blood-lead levels as high as 40 micrograms.

Lead released when people fire weapons at shooting ranges creates such a health risk that lead bullets should be phased out, according to new research. Every time someone fires their weapon, lead fragments and fumes are discharged at high pressure. Shooters then breathe in the metal, while other particles stick to their hands and are swallowed through smoking and eating. Women of child-bearing age are at particular risk, as the lead is stored in their bones where it substitutes for calcium. When a woman becomes pregnant, the fetus takes in lead along with the calcium it needs from its mother's bones, which can cause serious neurodevelopmental damage. Female shooters can also pass on lead exposure through breast milk. Dr Mark Laidlaw, a researcher in the Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Remediation (EnSuRe) at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, said the dangers of long-term exposure to lead were well known, but the risks for people using shooting ranges had not previously been fully explored. "While there is no safe level of lead exposure, US health bodies regard 5 micrograms per decilitre of blood as the level that's cause for concern. What this research found is that people using shooting ranges can record blood-lead levels as high as 40 micrograms, with women and children at particular risk. The kind of blood-lead levels found among shooters can lead to essential tremor, hypertension, cardiovascular-related mortality, electrocardiography abnormalities, decreased kidney function, psychiatric effects, decreased hearing, decreased cognitive function, decreased fertility, incidence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, adverse sperm parameters, increased spontaneous abortion, and reduced fetal growth in children."

In the US, about one million law enforcement officers train at indoor firing ranges, 20 million citizens practice target shooting, and 16,000-18,000 indoor firing ranges exist. The United States Geological Survey calculated that in 2012 about 60,100 metric tonnes of lead were used in ammunition and bullets in the US. Co-researcher Professor Gabriel Filippelli from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis said: "I am particularly concerned about children, who can be exposed by using the firing ranges themselves or through the fine lead-laden dust that mom or dad come home with adhering to their clothes and skin." Laidlaw said lead-free bullets and primers (involved in combusting the cartridge) already existed. "In the short term, we need better ventilation systems in indoor ranges and the development of airflow systems at outdoor ranges, protective clothing that is changed after shooting and a ban on smoking and eating at firing ranges. "But the real solution is a transition to copper bullets and lead-free primers. That may seem like a big ask, but Australia phased out lead in petrol between 2000 and 2002 even though it was a challenge to the automotive and fuel industries."

The shooters are up in arms but the long baseline studies show there is a significant effect. Perhaps this explains the shooter's attitudes.

Terrorists may seek to target Anzac Day commemorations in Gallipoli, Government says By defence reporter Andrew Greene and political reporter Matthew Doran Updated yesterday at 3:29pm

The Federal Government says it has received information to suggest terrorists may seek to target Anzac Day commemorations on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey.

Key points:

Government, AFP cannot detail nature of the threat, Dan Tehan says
Australian authorities work closely with their Turkish counterparts to ensure pilgrimage is safe
"It's up to the traveller to make the final decision on whether they travel or not," Mr Tehan says
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has updated its travel advice for Turkey to reflect the new information, but the overall warning level for the country has not changed.

Veterans Affairs Minister Dan Tehan said the Government and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) could not detail the nature of the threat, but urged caution for travellers to the area.

"As with any other location, we advise travellers of risks they are likely to face during their visit and encourage them to take appropriate risk-mitigation measures, if they decide to proceed with their visit," Mr Tehan said. "Ultimately, it is up to the traveller to make the final decision on whether to travel or not. Unfortunately, in the current global environment, major events attract threats of varying degrees. Regrettably, Anzac Day is not immune." AFP Deputy Commissioner Michael Phelan said Australian authorities were working closely with their Turkish counterparts to ensure those making the pilgrimage to Gallipoli were safe. "We have got people stationed in our embassy in Ankara, and we have been working closely with not only the Turkish National Police but also the Gendarmerie and around the peninsula for Anzac Day commemorations," he said. "We have confidence in the Turkish authorities to secure the peninsula and other celebrations in the area. They have a good track record of doing so, we are in constant liaison with them."
So "Ooooo terror terror boogie boogie" but actually it's all OK and the Turkish coppers have it well in hand. For fucks sake.

Queanbeyan stabbing: Counter-terrorism police investigate fatal rampage Updated about an hour ago

Physical evidence found at the scene of a fatal stabbing at a Queanbeyan petrol station has suggested the attack was terrorism related, NSW Police have said.

Key points:

A service station attendant was fatally stabbed
Second man has serious stab wounds, third attacked with tyre iron, fourth bashed with beer bottle
Two teenage boys have been arrested
NSW Police Joint Terrorism Unit now investigating
Two boys, aged 15 and 16, allegedly entered the service station in the early hours of Friday morning and stabbed Pakistani-born 29-year-old employee Zeeshan Akbar.

Emergency services were first alerted by an employee when he arrived at work about midnight to find his co-worker suffering serious stab wounds. Mr Akbar died at the scene and Queanbeyan police said his co-worker was "obviously very shaken". The alleged offenders had become locked inside the store and allegedly smashed their way out a window to escape. Police said the two teenagers were arrested following a police chase about 6:30am. Mr Akbar was one of four victims in a violent rampage that crossed the ACT-NSW border allegedly carried out by the two teens. NSW Deputy Police Commissioner Catherine Burn said evidence pointed to the attack being terror-related. She said the investigation involves NSW Police, the Australian Federal Police, ASIO and the Crime Commission. She also reassured the public during an afternoon press conference that there was "no imminent attack".

Police believe only one of the boys, the 16-year-old, is linked to terrorism, but both are known to police. Ms Burn said the information was received through sources and other information.

Friends grieve 'nicest person'

Friends have been shocked by the violent attack, saying Mr Akbar was a kind and calm person. Mr Akbar's friend Mohammed Shahnawaz went to the scene on Friday to pay his respects, along with a group of men who knew the victim. "Can you believe how bad it is for their family back home in Pakistan?" Mr Shahnawaz said. The men were shaking their heads, trying to understand why the victim had been targeted and said they condemned the attack. Queanbeyan residents have also stopped at the petrol station to lay flowers. Residents there said it was unlike Queanbeyan to witness such a crime. Natania Copp said Mr Akbar served her last night and she was shocked when she learned of his death on Friday morning. "It just hit me in the chest and I was there last night and I didn't know who it was at the time, I just said please, please, please don't let it be my favourite guy," Ms Copp said. "That's why I brought flowers here today just to let the family know that your son was the nicest person that I'd ever met behind a counter."

Local police reassure residents their community is safe

Monaro police commander Superintendent Rod Smith said it appeared the pair, from Queanbeyan, had also been involved in a series of "absolutely horrific" attacks nearby overnight. That allegedly included stabbing another man in the abdomen. He was taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Police said another man was bashed with a tyre iron in an aggravated break and enter, while yet another was hit with a beer bottle in a nearby park. The pair was also allegedly involved in another attempted robbery at Oaks Estate in the ACT. "It doesn't need to be said but it doesn't get much more serious than this," Superintendent Smith said. "We'd just like to reassure everybody that there are two people that we believe are involved and both of those people are currently in custody."

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also spoke of the attack, saying the circumstances raised "sufficient concern" to warrant the involvement of the joint counter-terrorism police team. Mr Turnbull said the crime "is shocking and a matter which underlines many of the concerns we have raised in this field". The teenagers are yet to be charged but are expected to face court in the ACT on Saturday morning. Investigators are seeking to extradite the teenagers to NSW, where they will be charged over the fatal stabbing and three other assaults.

OK you poo poo smears can we at least get the narrative straight. On the one hand if this is a terror attack (lol) Then:

1/Someone in the massive terror detection apparatus with so many extraordinary powers that were obtained to prevent these things hosed up royally.
2/You can't declare residents safe when you, failed to detect or stop an attack.

And if it wasn't/isn't a terror attack why are we kicking off with TERROR TERROR Oooooooo.....oooooooOOO Boggie Boggie as our first port of call?

Teenagers known to police do dumb destructive poo poo all the time. If these are the best terror assets we can find then maybe we should stop looking. Compare this response to the response to the Swedish truck attack where the Swedish Prime Minister

quote:

Earlier he had vowed that the Swedish people would stand firm in the face of any threat. 'Terrorists want us to be afraid, want us to change our behaviour, want us to not live our lives normally, but that is what we're going to do. 'So terrorists can never defeat Sweden, never,' he said.

Police officer apologises for putting 7yo student in back of van to teach him a lesson By Felicity James Posted about an hour ago

A Northern Territory police officer has apologised for putting a seven-year-old boy in the back of his van to teach him a lesson, after being called to the child's school. Remote Sergeant Marcus Lees, who works in the Ngukurr community, was filmed by a local resident while he spoke at a public meeting held shortly after the incident in March. "I did grab this child, I did take him by the arm," he said. "I took him to the back of the police van to show him what it'd be like if he kept mucking up and I put him in there." Sergeant Lees told the meeting a school staff member called police after an argument between the boy and another child in a classroom escalated. He said the boy was not in the van for long. "Was it the wrong thing to do? Yes," Sergeant Lees said. "To the family of that child, and all his extended family, I sincerely apologise. That was the wrong thing to do to that child."

Community 'deeply upset' by incident

Ngukurr elder Kevin Rogers said the community was deeply upset about the incident and the school's first response should have been to contact family or elders. "It's very sad," he said. "We don't want these type of things to happen in our community." Mr Rogers said he wanted the incident investigated to inform the community about what happened and why. "That child will never forget that," he said. "I'm not telling them how to do their job, but we weren't happy with what happened at the school."

Several community members spoke privately with the ABC about the incident and echoed Mr Rogers' concerns about police and the school. In a statement, a spokeswoman for NT Police said no disciplinary action had been taken. "The actions taken by the police officer were lawful, fair and in the interests of the safety of all involved," she said.:psyduck:

The NT Education Department confirmed it was reviewing the incident.

"Two investigators were in the Ngukurr community last week and a report will be prepared about the process undertaken by the school relating to this particular incident," a spokeswoman said. The community's Yugul Mangi Aboriginal Corporation chief executive, William Blackley, also said an inquiry was needed. "Our kids don't need to be terrified of police officers," Mr Blackley said. "That little fellow, I dare say he's not going to have much trust in police for the rest of his life."

Federal Government fails to name supporters of cashless welfare card trial By political reporter Dan Conifer Posted about 8 hours ago

The Federal Government is refusing to name the "community leaders" it claims support a Centrelink income management trial, amid a push to dramatically expand the program in May's budget.

Key points:

Greens asked Government to provide names of community leaders involved in discussions over the trial
Government said some members of working groups "requested their names not be provided"
The Coalition has justified the initiative by pointing to consultations with key figures in the locations it operates
The Cashless Debit Card forces 80 per cent of a person's welfare payments onto the card, which cannot pay for alcohol or gambling or be withdrawn as cash.

The Coalition has repeatedly justified the initiative by pointing to consultations with key figures in the locations it operates. But after being pressed by the Greens in Senate Estimates to name those supporters, the Government refused. "The [Human Services] department approached some of the members of the … groups to ask whether they agreed to their names being provided in this response," its statement said. "Some of them requested their names not be provided at this stage." The compulsory program currently operates in two areas with high Aboriginal populations — Ceduna in South Australia and Western Australia's East Kimberley region. Greens Indigenous affairs spokeswoman Rachel Siewert said it was a rubbish response.{/b]

"People being affected have the right to know who in their community is making the calls that affect their lives so strongly," she said. "Who are the people that are making these decisions? Are they really the people the community considers leaders?"

Refusal comes after MP backtracks on claims of support

The Government is searching for other communities where welfare quarantining can be rolled out. "We're hoping to see another 10 trial sites rolled out in this year's budget," Kalgoorlie-based federal Liberal MP Rick Wilson said. But fellow WA Liberal Melissa Price was recently forced to backtrack on a claim that communities were clamouring for the card. Several councils told the ABC Ms Price had never even discussed the issue with them. A government-funded report last month found a quarter of drinkers on the card reported consuming alcohol less often and many people had stopped gambling. [b]But the report showed one in two participants said their life was worse because of the card. Less than a quarter of those in the trials said it improved their lives.

Support 'across the board' for welfare measure, says Tudge <-(lol)

There are three community groups working with the Government to implement the program. Invited by the ABC to name supporters of the measure — including from its working groups — Human Services Minister Alan Tudge named one person.
"These community leaders, such as Ian Trust, are well-known figures, highly respected individuals," he said. Mr Trust is the executive director of the Wunan Foundation, an Aboriginal development organisation in the East Kimberley. During a recent visit to the Kimberley, Mr Tudge said support was "across the board". "Whether it be some of the church leaders, the police officers, the supermarket owners, the ambulance drivers, the Indigenous leaders, the non-Indigenous leaders [or] the chamber of commerce," he said. "Anybody who has been out with me and consulted with community leaders out there does know that is the case."

Mr Tudge said the Greens' opposition was blindly ideological and demanded the party offer its own solutions to the "welfare-fuelled alcohol abuse" in some Aboriginal communities.
I'm not racist but I won't give you my name.

Don't entirely agree with this. At some point internal homogeneity and permissiveness undermines what xenophobic conservatives are trying to sell (ie) Australian's against further immigration.

Photo is an obvious fake. No supermarket allows any shelves to remain empty even if it means stacking bulk toilet paper on them. Suppliers pay to have their products on shelves.

Also I just did border farce Internationally and we have to have the most authoritarian hosed up border regime outside of North Korea. I don't think it is a coincidence that our terror theatre and over funding of border farce go hand in hand. We really need to stop being fascist bullies in general at this point.

The LNP rhetoric around these 457 visa changes is straight out of Mein Kampf, we are that far down the rabbit hole. On troubled teens there was a reality TV program called Brat Camp and one of the criticisms was it was exploiting youth mental illness. After watching it I find myself strangely pleased about a bunch of softly spoken hippies torturing teen tearaways. :ohdear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13olfeD026g

The idea that councils are run by developers is frankly dumb. In Victorian cases where councils call in planning applications for a decision rather than leaving the decision delegated to the planning officers, the vast majority are to refuse a permit due to community opposition. Councils approving a development when officers recommended it be refused are vanishingly rare.
Sweet summer child. Who gives the planning officer's their guidlines?

The very worst piece of antiwar protest that was even enacted on Australian soil was the single woman who threw red paint on the commanding officer of first battalion in Sydney in 1966. This has been repackaged and retold as a scandalous attack on returning veterans ever since. It has been used as the trump card in the war/anti-war debate on the side of war ever since. What moral authority can your case have if one of its proponents is prepared to stoop so low?

If only the same standards applied to cabinet ministers and the parties who support them.

Liberal MP Stuart Robert's CCC testimony 'unbelievable', Gold Coast councillor Peter Young says 7.30 By Peter McCutcheon Updated Wed at 9:32am

Turnbull Government backbencher Stuart Robert's testimony to Queensland's crime watchdog has been described by a Gold Coast councillor as "unbelievable". Mr Robert told the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) last week the reason he helped divert $60,000 of Liberal National Party funds into the campaigns of two independent candidates before last year's Gold Coast council elections was to stop the Labor Party getting a foothold. But independent councillor Peter Young said he believed he was the real target in the Gold Coast Council Division 5 election, not the Labor Party. "I'm confident Mr Robert does not consider me an ally," Mr Young said. "I've often been pigeonholed as an anti-development environmentalist."

Mr Young believes Mr Robert secretly diverted money into the campaign of his ex-staffer Felicity Stevenson in order to protect the interests of his pro-development donors. "Felicity Stevenson even put me last on her how-to-vote card, behind the allegedly pro-ALP candidate," he said. A spokesman for Mr Robert described Cr Young's claims as "false and disappointing". "The management of Ms Stevenson's campaign was entirely up to the candidate, including preference arrangements," he said. "The funding was provided to Felicity Stevenson by the LNP before Cr Young announced on February 10 that he would be contesting the election." 'My personal belief is that Peter Young was the target'

In his testimony to the CCC, Mr Robert singled out AWU industrial advocate Stacey Schinnerl as the Division 5 candidate he was trying to stop. But Ms Schinnerl has told the ABC she was rung by Ms Stevenson on February 13 last year and offered a preference deal. "The offer was that we both put Peter Young after each other on our how-to-vote cards," she said. Ms Schinnerl said the offer was not accepted. "My personal belief is that Peter Young was the target, and it goes back to protecting donors to the Liberal Party," she said. "Peter Young tends to vote against development applications that threaten the environment."

Mr Young won the contested division with just under 40 per cent of the primary vote. Ms Stevenson polled 20 per cent and Ms Schinnerl finished third on 16.6 per cent. The LNP's financial support of Ms Stevenson was not made public until after the election. Ms Stevenson was one of six candidates in the 2016 Gold Coast elections who hired former Tony Abbott staffer and developer lobbyist Simone Holzapfel on their campaigns. Last May, 7.30 asked Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate whether he was aware Ms Holzapfel was working on so many campaigns at once. His response was that he did not ask Ms Holzapfel for her client list.
Ah the Brandis defence. Lets see how that runs.

Israeli national charged over hoax bomb, shooting threats to Australian schools Updated 38 minutes ago An 18-year-old Israeli national has been charged with making thousands of hoax bomb and shooting threats, many of which targeted Australian schools. It is alleged over 2,000 robotic voice bomb and shooting hoax calls began in January 2016. Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and other state police forces investigated 591 threats in Australia. Victoria Police confirmed 128 of the threats were directed to Victorian schools. It is not known which other states were targeted. Internationally, the threats were investigated by a joint team including the FBI and law enforcement agencies in Israel, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

"The Victoria Police E-Crime Squad provided vital cyber evidence which resulted in the arrest of the Israeli suspect," Victoria Police said in a statement. "Israeli police acknowledged they could not have done it without us [the E-Crime Squad]." The suspect's identity can not be reported for legal reasons. He was 17 at the time of the offences. The case will be dealt with by the Israeli courts. In a separate case, a 17-year-old boy was in a children's court in Victoria on Thursday, charged with making dozens of bomb hoaxes to schools across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia between May 2016 and April 2017.
The boy is due to appear in court again on June 26. Victoria Police confirmed the two cases were not connected.
