I don't think that's really all that accurate. If they're smart they can do both. There are a bunch of meh to good FAs that they can overpay on short term deals that are just as good as whatever they might grab out of the expansion draft, but they can't really turn those FAs into prospects until next deadline at the earliest. So grab dudes to trade NOW and then sign vets to fill in the lineup. Team is probably just as good plus you get more picks. I've had this inkling since they signed Shipachyov and were rumoured to be bringing over Dadonov.

NHL rosters have more room for meh players though because of how bad most 4th lines and 7th dmen are. NFL and MLB rosters don't really have room to use guys in the same way. Like Doan is still good enough for most teams 4th lines at the very least. ^^^so does Jagr.
