I'm not certain I like exposing rust and protecting Maatta. Of course it could be moot if they already have some kinda deal for flower.

:agreed:

I find it extremely amusing that Colorado has amassed three players named Bork over the years, and that they're all exposed. Like the mgmt is just now realizing that bringing in Borks doesn't guarantee Cups, even if it did happen to work that one time

i am curious to see how good/bad maatta plays away from trevor daley who's historically been a huge drag fancystats-wise and only good in that regard last year when he played most of his minutes with brian dumoulin. i'm not expecting miracles but daley's not exactly the kind of steady reliable defenseman to prop up a shaky partner and give him room to make mistakes

IIRC maatta's WOWYs don't look good no matter how you cut them

huh, there are no direct flights from PHX to MTL? i guess a layover in detroit ain't so bad

Weird that when they're trying to unload him, all of PAS suddenly loves MAF.

it's exactly the opposite of weird that there are good feelings for MAF right now, since he's very likely not going to be on the pens anymore. hard to hate on such a lovable doof when you don't have to worry about more beachball gifs. and the fact that his hot streak was almost singlehandedly responsible for getting the pens into the ECF doesn't hurt either

Cam Ward is the only reason Carolina won in '06. Yeah he got bad almost immediately after, but he was lights out during the run.

He might be the worst goalie to win the cup, which is different than being the goalie with the worst cup-winning run. I'm not sure who the latter is tbh, I think most cup-winning runs tend to be good to outstanding, can't really think of a truly bad cup-winning run in the past 20 years or so

Well so far this is off to a bad start.

man i'm normally pretty ambivalent about jersey changes, but this is just bad. shame too b/c the preds currently have one of the best jerseys in the league imo

the blues jersey looks fine imo and if you showed it to me and said this is their current jersey that they've used for the past 5 years i wouldn't bat an eye

the preds jersey isn't awful but it's a downgrade from their current jersey, which is one of the better jerseys in the league

I don't think Hossa would consider retiring if it wasn't extremely serious. He might be slowing down but he still almost hit 30G last year. Still might be convenient for the Hawks, but not in a :tinfoil: kind of way

Goddamn our blue line is getting stacked though.

Slavin, Pesce, Hanafin, Faulk, TVR plus AHL depth.

i can't tell if this is sarcasm b/c some of those guys are good, but adding TVR does not contribute to stackedness

I guess that's not a god awful trade but oh man if I was an oilers fan I would be real nervous with Chiarelli behind the reins

As a Penguins fan, it pleases me greatly that there's a serious possibility that poor roster management might be a real limiting factor to McDavid ever getting close to achieving a legacy like Crosby

Im not sure if building a team exclusively through good G committee D and letting good C bank shots in off of 20 year olds on cheap deals is the right plan but it is a plan

so seems like hawks losing hjamarlsson was pretty bad, but im kind of surprised by the reaction to the saad/panarin trade. panarin obviously has better raw production numbers, but if you look overall at their stats it's hard for me to think that panarin is that much better of a scorer vs. just a kane coattailer. seems kind of like a wash in terms of player impact but saad is marginally younger so seems like a pretty OK deal for CHI?

Yes but Saad definitely is that.

Exactly. If you've got 2 guys that can coattail off Kane pretty well with the same cap hit, might as well go for the younger one? Will be interesting to see how Panarin does on CBJ...

Ooh, strong write-in candidate.

Jim Benning hasn't done anything egregiously stupid lately. On the other hand,

Dorion: Could have traded Methot prior to the expansion draft but decided not to and lose him for no return.
Chiarelli: Traded Eberle to make cap space to sign Kris Russell to a 4x4 deal
Rutherford: Traded Sundqvist and a 1st round pick to St. Louis for Ryan Reaves and a 2nd round pick
Holland: Went way off the board for a pick, left Mrazek exposed in the expansion draft and Red Wings beat writers wrote hit pieces on him. Of course, Mrazek wasn't actually picked so that relationship was poisoned for basically no reason.

So yeah, some pretty strong candidates out there right now.

One of these decisions is not like the others. GMJR still makes me a bit nervous but swapping 4th liners is not going to be very consequential for the Pens

Giving up a first round pick to get a markedly worse player is pretty goddamned stupid.

It wasn't a good trade but if you think it's comparable to what Holland and Chiarelli are doing, you're nuts

That said, it is extremely bizarre that JR thinks the Pens need more grit after going back to back with potentially the softest team in the league*

*excluding Sidney Crosby's Good Hockey Plays of course
