Ugh, I'm watching season 2 as a group with friends, and they decided to wait until all 12 episodes are out, because that's how we watched the first season, and they don't want the suspense of not being able to go to the next episode immediately. I've read up to chapter 70 of the manga (the end of the Uprising arc. And it is loving killing me not being able to see their reactions to this part of the story. The ending of this episode is one of the best :tviv: moments in the whole drat series.

Thank you, Goons, for providing me with some reactions. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to lurking and keeping my mouth shut so I don't accidentally spoil anything that I know.

I read the manga straight after I finished with Season 1 of the anime.
In the anime thread, people had speculated about Reiner being the Colossal Titan. I read through these chapters on the edge of my seat, like, "Is he, or isn't he?!" and decided that he wasn't after he punched the titan in the face, incorrectly assuming he would just turn into a titan instead of get that near death.
I didn't even THINK about the colossal titan. So when Reiner revealed that he was the Colossal Titan and Bertholdt was the Colossal Titan, I had the craziest sensation of both "Oh, I guessed wrong, he really is the titan" and "WHAT THE gently caress HE'S THE TITAN?" at once.

Btw, for the informal poll, I'm a manga reader, but only up to the end of the arc after this one, which is chapter 69 (2015)/90 (current) as it was incredibly painful to get to really good cliffhangers and be on the edge of my seat for a month at a time. I'm planning to buy the next volume tomorrow and continue on. :unsmigghh:

Huh... the linked manga chapter there (Ch15, pp.9-10) is another interesting bit of subterfuge by the author of this thing. On the one hand, you show off all the characters who had seen true horror on the battle field... and then you completely make people forget about it with the "ImoOnna Incident").

I'm not sure I'm going to stay anime-only for much longer. I read that it was better to wait until after this week's reveal to start reading the manga, but I've been meaning to rewatch S1, and at that rate I might as well go through the original source looking for better hints, right?

I went back and read the manga from the beginning after finishing season 1 of the anime, and I really hope you end up reading the manga from the beginning like I did. With each arc that I've read, the early scenes have layered double, triple, and more meanings. For instance, in that iconic scene of The Colossal Titan looking over the wall, the first time you see it and you're like, "Holy poo poo, what is that titan?" At the end of season 1, you look and you're like, "Holy poo poo, that's a mega-titan most likely controlled by a human", and after this episode, you look at it like, Holy poo poo, that's Reiner and Bertholdt, and they're loving CHILD SOLDIERS acting under orders." Watching season 1 with friends, there are times I've had to cover my mouth with my hand during fairly innocuous looking scenes, so as not to give away that something was amiss. There are things I can't mention here, and I know people who are further along in the manga can see even more. I think there was a guy in the manga thread who was watching with friends paused right on Bertholdt's face when his friend asked, "But where has the colossal Titan been all this time?"

Also, while the anime is an incredibly good adaption (and my preferred one), there are some scenes that are manga only. Most notably, the training arc was paced very differently in the manga. The part where Eren got eaten was chapter 5 and episode 5, but in the manga, the training arc took place afterwards in a flashback, and was much longer, with more detail. Annie and Eren's relationship was more nuanced, with her being someone who trained him in hand-to-hand combat on a more regular basis., making Eren's horrified realization that the Female Titan had the same fighting style as Annie even better. And of course the bonus chapter between chapter 18 and chapter 19, Ilse's notebook, in volume 4, was made into OVA, ending very obscure for the average anime user to know existed, much less to find.

Right. I believe I also read an interview saying that the story had expanded as when he started writing, he found he wanted to and could flesh out certain characters and their motivations (I believe one of the major examples he gave was Commander Erwin Smith). But the one thing that's been consistent since the story was first published is that the story is already planned out from beginning to ending. I'll post again if I find interviews again, but I agree with the sentiment that based on interviews, and based on where the manga is right now, it probably is in it's last 1/3rd or 1/4th.

Ok, found them.

2014 - "According to manga editor Shintaro Kawakubo, the manga is finishing laying out its mysteries. He says he think it will take three or four years to address them all and wrap up the series."

2015 - Shintaro Kawakubo - "Specifically, there are about three years worth of manga chapters left. Since the manga started in 2009 and it has been 6 years, the comment is consistent with Isayama’s recent claim that the story is approximately “60% finished.”

2016 - Author Hajime Isayama - "Tankobon Volume 20 will be released on August 9th, and it will approach the climax of the story. So everyone: please keep reading until the epilogue."

Gantolandon posted:

And when push comes to shove, she has the least problem with trying to kill her former companions - something that even mass murderers such as Berthold, Reiner and Annie couldn't really bring themselves to.

Wait was that all there was in the anime? Around this time in the manga, Mikasa has a moment where she's internally conflicted because she feels that killing them probably would have been the best thing to do, but her feelings of camaraderie with them as fellow soldiers made it so she couldn't finish the job.

Also, I'll try not to white knight Mikasa too much here, because I get that she's really a hate her or love her character (with about half the loves are coming from a place of being attracted to her character), but I really like her as a character, because while she's nearly physically perfect, mentally and emotionally (which are Armin and Eren's biggest strengths), she is brittle, broken, and barely holding together. Her being insanely codependent on Eren is certainly a thing (and in my opinion, a very entertaining subversion of the "heroine who basically exists to prop up the hero"), but I give her a pass with flying colors because back when it seemed like Eren died, she dealt with her feelings of despair and be willing to live on without him, to the point of trying to take down a titan with a knife until either she died or the titan was dead. That was back when Armin's doubts about himself and his feelings that he shouldn't have been saved and Eren should have lived instead were mentally crippling him, and she immediately took Eren's role of reassuring him, saying something to the effect of "You're not useless to us. When we have time after we get through this, I'll let you know how."

As for her general coldness and uncaring attitude, I agree with the sentiment that the things she's seen are so horrific, her physical coping mechanism has been for her brain to just shut down certain emotional processes, and she laser focuses on the feelings that she feels strongest. I read her as observing, reacting to, and caring about the things around her that would inspire feelings, but mostly only externally expressing the things that are most important to her. On a scale of 1 to 10, Sasha is like a 2 (she gave her her bread after accusing Sasha of putting the whole hall in chaos for farting!), and Eren is an 11. I don't deny that she's uh, kind of hard to read, and most of her spoken lines tend to revolve around Eren and the many, many threats to his safety and well being.

Having read them recently in one shot, I think it would be possible to condense the third and fourth arcs into one 12-episode arc, and that would be a good idea, storytelling-wise. Especially since 1 episode is about 1.5 chapters of material, even with the extras the anime adds. That could also lead to the story wrapping up in probably 24 more episodes after that, given when the editor has said the story is set to end, so that there didn't have to be these huge gaps between anime seasons.

Without spoiling anything, how does the manga fair critically with later story lines? Is it still good? Convoluted? Both?

I've read to the latest chapter with an official English translation, and I've loved it all the way through. I would also say that the plot doesn't get convoluted, the world and plot have been planned from the beginning to make reveals the result of a hard won fight by the characters. If this season approximates to a fourth story arc, while there are flaws and material to argue about in the forth and fifth arcs (I'm in the camp of people who like them both, and think the flaws with pacing and storytelling people complain about are minor, especially when you can read all the chapters in a row and not have to wait a month in between), and people do, but the majority of people I've seen stick with the story and enjoy it. We're in approximately the start of the eighth story arc in the manga now which and everything is very :tviv:, and starting in the seventh arc, I've barely seen anyone complain about the plot and consider ragequitting, if at all.

Bascially, if I were to give it a numeric score from 1-10, with 10 being my score for this arc and the female titan arc, the absolute lowest score I would give any parts of the story would be a 7.5 (which would correspond to, say, having to watch another loving episode of that Trost battle), which would be the exception, not the norm.

Tl;dr The next two arcs generate more complaints than other ones, but don't mistake that for a nosedive in quality. It's good all the way through, and in my opinion, the absolute opposite of convoluted.

What is everyone's favorite OPs so far? Mine is the S2 one. Also I noticed in the season 1 part 2 OP they sort of hint at Reiner, Bert and Anne being grouped together. I remember when I watched I thought the order was just some random side characters, but now it seems like the grouped them by titan affiliation. There's a part where it shows some face looking on and its those three in order. Then before that Is Ymir and then Historias face, so just based on that I'm thinking Historia is a titan. Plus the facial expressions of hers matches Reimer/Bert/Annes, a sort of sideglance turning away from the horror, and not the frightened expression of the presumably non-titan characters.

I love all of them, but S1's Guren no Yumiya has gotta be my favorite. The ending of the extended version of S2 JIyuu no Tsubasa from 3:45 to 5:28 is the best sounding part of any of them, though. Holy poo poo.) Speaking of foreshadowing in the songs, for a long time the top rated comment on the video of ED2 Great Esacape was, hilariously, "Boy Bertholdt sure looks mad at that wall. Hope he doesn't smash it."

Incidentally, reading through the comments here, I was thinking that some people who were anime only would want to know if the basement would be answered in the season next year, so then they could decide if they wanted to hold out for the reveal in anime form. I'm watched maybe 5 anime shows in the last 8 years, since at 30 I've mostly outgrown it and find the prevelant fanservice on young characters to be the epitome of :stonk: (Attack on Titan I only picked up because I saw GIF's of the titans and figured it looked amazingly funny and horrifying enough that I could mute the anime teen drama - oh how wrong I was.) From my point of view, Puella Magi Madoka Magica (ignore that the trailer says it's of the movie, the first two movies were an adaption of the TV series.) is a very good pick. The TV series is a fully plotted out 12-episode story that starts off on the surface of a typical Sailor Moon-ish anime tale of a girl who's approached by a magical creature to become a magical warrior to fight evil, and then descends into a very dark and thoughtful deconstruction of what that would actually mean in terms of the psychological toil of having to be constantly in danger, having to battle for your life and still have to act day to day like you were just a normal middle school kid, why the hell any kind of being would think it would be the best idea to fight off earth destroying monsters would be to recruit a secret militia of emotionally fragile teenage girls with no combat experience, etc.

It's a very different genre, but the similarities on Attack on Titan that make me like both of them are the fact that the story is well plotted out from the start, and when you watch all the way to the end, you can rewatch earlier episodes and catch many things that looked like one scene at first glance, but actually had something much deeper going on, like in AoT when you can watch Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie in the training arc. I also like that it takes some fairly typical tropes to the genre (Shoujo for Madoka Magica, Shonen for Attack on Titan) and adds a more realistic, darker aspect to the characters reacting events.
I have not seen the movies yet, so I cannot comment on them. Be aware there is some Sailor Moon transformation level nudity in it, which I found uncomfortable, but not enough to quit the show over.

Everyone will probably recommend Full Metal Alchemist, which is a super popular show that deserves it's fame. Lots of great worldbuilding, fun characters, and despite being mostly cheerful it dips into some very dark themes. Either the original show or the remake, Brotherhood, are equally good.

Seconding that recommendation and everything that was said. Also, I hate to be That Person, but if you're deciding between the two, The original Full Metal Alchemist (2003) was ran when the manga was incomplete, so part of the way through, the animation company decided to just go and write their own fanficiton a continuation on their own original script rather than wait for the manga to catch up. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) is the adaption of the actual manga story as intended by the author, and the one I STRONGLY recommend.

Squidster posted:

You might also enjoy From The New World ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUFnHKtm-8I ), which is similar in the scope of it's worldbuilding. The central mystery of the setting is slowly revealed throughout, and is breathtaking in the scale of its horror. It unfortunately dips into some pretty gross teen drama at times, but the worldbuilding is fascinating.

It's about a class of young students in a peaceful village where everyone has telekinetic powers. They're being carefully trained to be as pacifist and gentle as possible, and children who can't control their powers, or show aggression, simply disappear. The female lead dreams of an older sister she can't quite remember. The few humans are served by armies of servile beast-men, who worships the humans as gods. Any dissent is punished with brutal telekinetic execution. The children live this idyllic blessed life of privilege in a world built on unbearable and unsustainable brutality, and it is about to crumble.
Hellloooo, new recommendation for anime #6!

The fight proceeds pretty much the same as in the show until the point where she crushes Eren's titan's face into paste with a kick. In the manga, she takes him down, and then immediately starts running and is well up the wall before anyone can catch back up to her. Armin realizing that they can't catch her with the 3DMG and has Eren's mangled but healing titan throw Mikasa up the wall to intercept her and cut her down. After she falls, she encases her human body in the crystal, but it doesn't engulf Eren's titan.

Compare that to the show where we get a rote Shonen mecha fight where the way that the protagonists win is through an rear end-pull rage powerup and their individual strength with basically no character moments, creative thinking or teamwork to overcome a seemingly insurmountable challenge.

This sequence is from chapter 31 to 33 for those interested.

The shifters are all fascinating characters and I think Annie got the short end of the stick when it came to how she was treated in the show vs in the manga compared to Reiner, Berthold, and Ymir.

That's a lot of good stuff, honestly, and I agree there are quite a few things that adapt from the manga that leave me scratching my head, character development wise, I want to mention that two of those things were specific requests by the author to be put into the anime. From what I remember, being too lazy to source 4 year old interviews right now, Annie's laugh at being discovered was actually something in the original storyboard, but not put into the manga, a fact that Hajime Isayama regretted enough to request it be put in. He's described it as portraying the feeling of her being able to discard all of the secrets burdening her down and be a normal 15-year-old girl, her true self.

Isayama has also said that a specific request for the anime was to make Eren's character more useless, and that he himself didn't fully realize Eren's complete character until after he had seen the anime and heard Yūki Kaji act as his voice, as Eren was the main character and more of a "slave to the story".

The final Annie vs. Eren fight I got nothing, though. I saw the anime first so I like both of them, but I understand a lot of the dislike from manga fans. I'm disappointed myself that a lot of the reaction of the characters after the battle to regain Eren from Reiner and BerritoBertholdt was cut to fit the 12 episode format. I was especially looking forward to Historia losing her poo poo over why the hell Ymir would leave her and screaming at people not to call her Krista anymore. I was also looking foward to Jean, Connie, and Eren talking about the cost of saving Eren, and Eren growing as a person and deflatedly thanking Jean for saving Mikasa and him instead of rising to Jean's bait.

I'm not trying to single you out, Philip Rivers, it's not in the OP, but in the last thread we had a "no manga spoilers, not even in tags, take it to the manga discussion thread" rule, and it's been an unwritten rule for this thread.

That's true, but I still think that the anime's adaptation undercuts this narrative more than the manga version. In the show, Eren's rage gives him the strength to spook Annie into running, and Mikasa is perfectly positioned to finish her.

Meanwhile in the comic, Eren loses convincingly to Annie and the fight is more about his internal conflict fighting her, and the emotional impact of her reveal, and she is only overcome because of Eren working with his comrades.

I think the theme of individual power being overcome by the power of the many sacrificing and working together is a major theme of the series. The way the anime handled the fight undercut that theme, and was more concerned about the spectacle of meat mecha than the emotional impact of Eren and friends being forced to reckon with the fact that their comrade is a murderer and traitor to everything they believe in.

All things considered it's a minor critique, but because the show has done such a good job generally, it stands out more.

I think that's true, and you've articulated a lot of things about differences in the presentation of the Eren vs. Annie fight that I feel too. Aspects of Annie's character interactions with Eren getting cut in the anime adaption are one of the few criticisms I have on the anime adaption, and I'm always going to be a bit sour about it. Especially when there were scenes added to fit the 26 episode, plot twist of Eren "dying" in the 5th episode format, that were less interesting or inspired. (The, "No Pixis come back and play chess with meeeeeeeeeee!" being the most egregious example)

In general, I find the characters in the manga to be more mature, but a bit more flat and similar to each other; especially in this first half of the story. The anime ones are more interesting and varied, but they also have a lot of edge and maturity sanded off. Honestly at this point, I think I'm turning into a :goonsay: "Both are really good and have different parallels in strengths and weaknesses in character development and storytelling, you should read and watch them both if you want to be a true anime connoisseur and get the full experience."

What do titans smell like?

That actually has an answer. :psyduck:

Bessatsu Magazine 2014-11 posted:

Q: Mike smells all kinds of things, how does a titan smell like?
A: The special smell of a hot spring town!

(Mike Zacharias was the squad leader from the Survey Corps that got interrogated by Moneky Trouble and then killed)

Also, hilariously,

Bessatsu Magazine 2013-11 posted:

Q: In vol. 5, Mike met Eren for the first time, and sniffed him. What did he think and felt after sniffing him?
A: Mike felt that he’s more alpha than Eren.

Hahahahaha, that fan-translated page is hilarious! It's already terrible, but were you reading it left-to-right, too? That would make it even worse, as manga is read right-to-left.

If I recall correctly, the official translation is done by Kodansha Comics. Personally I buy the chapters on Amazon for $1.99 each, but the most inexpensive option is to go to Crunchyroll which has chapters 58 - 94 (latest, June 2017 chapter). The cost is $6.95 a month, and there's a free trial for new members here:
https://www.crunchyroll.com/freetrial

Most of what you can get for "free" is fan translations, and the quality of those is generally you get what you pay for.

^^^^^
I'll read it left to right for maximum hilarity enjoyment.

Hahahahahaha, that's a really funny situation. One that I'm sure most of us have been in. Here, I took some small screenshots from my copy of chapter 51 to show what the real translation looks like, to show a helpful comparison:
