Wasn't the War Doctor's screwdriver the one Nardole used for his diversion? I don't remember War's very well but I remembered it being red and having the same-ish shape.
War's Sonic was a lightly-modified Four's Sonic.

Fitting, given they were somewhere in Four's era, what with the Movellens and Daleks at war with one another.

Yeah, it was a great scene and part of what makes it so great for me is that there is nothing surprising or even all that new about it - everybody knew exactly what we were going to see/what was going to happen and then that's exactly what they showed. They didn't shake things up or twist things around, they just did that shot really, really, really loving well and made it look amazing.
They designed the episode to be a new jumping on point (to the point they changed the episode title from "A Star In Her Eye" to "The Pilot" as in a Pilot Episode), which makes me wonder what a completely new watcher was thinking during that scene.

There's times when the characters in the show feel like they're speaking to the audience as much as they're speaking to other characters.

So Twelve is telling the audience about the TARDIS just as much as he's telling Bill; sure, veteran viewers may be a bit tired of that, but the visuals help lessen the sting.

I wonder if there's any particular reason or reasons why this one seemed to be such a clean start? Has it been written about in a magazine or interview anywhere?
I suspect it's because we're getting a whole new slew of writers for Series 11, so making sure they only really have to watch one Series instead of 5 would help with writing comprehensible episodes
But that's just my assumption and is by no means 100% accurate

Then the doctor, on discovering a new form of life, immediately erases the memories of an entire species.

What the gently caress?

That is literally the behaviour of a psychopath. Thats the sort of plot the Master would cook up to install himself as high overlord of earth without anybody complaining. That was an evil thing to do.
He erased the glitches in the system that caused the robots to murder humans - wiping their memory, in this case, was the good thing to do

It's like defragging your hard drive or verifying your game files so everything works without crashing in flames

The robots are still sentient - their own separate form of life

I give it a month before the humans try usurping control and get mulched

Good thing there's hundreds of other human ships out there, seeding the stars with their...idiocy

If the First Doctor was to show up again for whatever reason the producers make, I think he's the best for the job, even if his Hartnell impression leaves much to be desired. Of course, he's an actor, not an impressionist, so I can forgive the altered delivery

Still waiting for someone to splice together a series of flashbacks to the Doctor talking about remembering the dead - for example, from the 50th Anniversary Special

WARRIOR: If you have been inside my head, then you know what I've seen. The suffering. Every moment in time and space is burning. It must end, and I intend to end it the only way I can.
MOMENT: And you're going to use me to end it by killing them all, Daleks and Time Lords alike. I could, but there will be consequences for you.
WARRIOR: I have no desire to survive this.
MOMENT: Then that's your punishment. If you do this, if you kill them all, then that's the consequence. You live. Gallifrey. You're going to burn it, and all those Daleks with it, but all those children too. How many children on Gallifrey right now?
WARRIOR: I don't know.
-
WARRIOR: Did you ever count?
DOCTOR: Count what?
WARRIOR: How many children there were on Gallifrey that day.
DOCTOR: I have absolutely no idea.
WARRIOR: How old are you now?
DOCTOR: Ah, I don't know. I lose track. Twelve hundred and something, I think, unless I'm lying. I can't remember if I'm lying about my age, that's how old I am.
WARRIOR: Four hundred years older than me, and in all that time you've never even wondered how many there were? You never once counted?
DOCTOR: Tell me, what would be the point?
DOCTOR 10: Two point four seven billion.
WARRIOR: You did count!
DOCTOR 10: You forgot? Four hundred years, is that all it takes?
DOCTOR: I moved on.
DOCTOR 10: Where? Where can you be now that you can forget something like that?
