This show is bad. Like not peddling fascist propaganda bad like some other shows this season, but just plain incompetent bad.

Which show's that?
Sorry for posting and leaving, but the show I was "Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?'. Which is mostly just boring bad but when you start thinking about what the show is saying it gets much worse very fast, you know like how Lifetime movies often have a really messed up subtext.

What? Sukasuka's pretty ok and it isn't fascist propaganda at all. You realise the point is that the guy's against and disgusted about there being child soldier suicide bombers and actively tries to make things better, along with a really on the nose "racism is bad" subplot.

If that's fascist propaganda, Re:Creators is about the validation of North Korea's strategy of re-writing history to make them into the greatest nation on earth to become the greatest nation on earth.
You see being disgusted with the all female child soldiers is perfectly in line with fascist fiction. It is meant to shame the male audience into military service. The suicide bombers are only necessary because of the lack of available men of sufficiently pure human lineage to wield the weapons properly. They emphasize repeatedly that the female characters don't want to fight, but what is the only thing they want to do instead. Well the only one we ever explore wants to settle down and have children.

Then you have the "racism" plot falling very flat because the vast majority sympathetic characters look basically human while the people hurting the war effort are 100% non-human looking.

Also re:creators isn't validating North Korea, it's just a rather self-indulgent not especially well made celebration of Japanese nerd culture.

I'm pretty sure this marks the fourth episode in a row where nothing has happened.

Things did happen this episode. If you consider nothing to have happened this episode, then I think it's pretty clear by now that this show isn't for you.

That's not a dig at anyone, to be clear.
They've spent that time explaining the same very basic plan to different groups of people. Yes that is technically "things happening" but the dramatic stakes didn't change, no new thematic ground has been covered. It's the same any given bad shonen filler or Michael Bay's Transformers movies being nearly three hours long. There are technically events to be described, but they are all ultimately pointless to the story. People just did what they told us they were going to do without major complications. This was the first time in those four episodes that there was even a minor conflict and even then it was resolved by the end of the next scene without saying or examining anything. A character abandons and reconciles with the process without any examination as to why or what changes, and Sota's tortuously slow realization that he should DO SOMETHING deserves a medal for deliberately wasting time.

Why would I do that? Tarantino talking scenes are generally good. Tarantino also knows how to use the camera.

edit: I'm honestly trying to figure out what my friends get out of it, and I'm failing.

Unfortunately all the creators are too bland and wholesome to really do anything interesting with the concept, outside of dating sim writer guy. They're all super passionate whose wants more or less align with their creations. We don't have any work-a-day writers, authors writing about characters whose morals are different than their own, or even just someone writing a satire. Everyone is working on their passion project and all of those passion projects are dreadfully straight forward.

I'd love to have a Stephen King just going "I was way too high when I wrote your book to remember anything about it. I learned the plot when I watched the movie adaptation."

If they were more cavalier about killing character the large cast wouldn't be a problem.

Why would you bother dwelling anymore on the worst character out of an impressively bad cast?

If it's supposed to make fun of him it didn't really work. He has more life than anyone else in the show. Everyone else was as rote as slasher movie victims.
