There's a certain irony in that this series is a failed off-the-mask-of-MAF save from being tied. Dubinsky had him beaten in OT in Game 3 and MAF got back just in time to have it ring off his lid.

I didn't see the game tonight due to my own beer league game but Columbus has played pretty well and maybe deserves a better fate.

That said I predicted Pens in 5 so maybe I can actually get one first round series right without being red xed.

I didn't see the game tonight but I think Maatta has been pretty good this series in the games I've seen. He's Hal Gill slow but he usually makes up for it with how smart he is with the puck/his positioning.

my observations as a dumb hockey person are that tonight it seemed like all of them except for the ever superior Justin Schultz was getting beaten to every puck and every corner and every battle by the BJ forwards and it was making it very hard for their forwards to hold the line, and a lot harder than it needed to be to get the offense moving in the other direction

The Pens need to figure out these lovely first periods they're having. It obviously cost them tonight and could have easily cost them in any of the first three. Can't play comeback hockey all the time.

Not sure he's better than any of the guys playing.

I don't get the Maatta hate up in here either. I didn't see last night's game so maybe he was a dumpster fire but overall he's been one of our steadier defenders this series. Prior to last night's game he was only on the ice for like one goal against iirc.

Whatever happened with Maatta anyway? Wasn't he pretty highly touted when he came into pittsburgh a couple years ago? Did he get hurt or something and just couldn't come back from it?

He's had some injuries and surgery to remove a potential cancer. I remember him being slow as hell even in his rookie year but he seems slower now even than he was back then.

Still he usually makes up for it by being smart and having a good pass/gap. But yeah it's definitely noticeable when he fucks up because his lack of foot speed can doom him.

Staying healthy isn't going to help his slow skating speed, he's pretty hosed in that regard.

He'd probably fit better in the West or on a slower more deliberate team like the Caps.

He still performs fine. It's not always pretty. But his possession numbers are fine and he doesn't do anything glaringly bad usually. The thing that concerns me more than the slow foot speed is his offensive ability seems to have completely dried up. He used to be good for 30 or so points, but now he's like a pure defensive dman who can pass. Kinda like Brian Dumoulin I guess except he can't skate :v:

Yah I think it's more that after he was drafted and made the team as an 18 year old, everyone (well, Pens fans anyways) had visions of him continuing to improve and being this excellent blueliner for them. That's probably not going to happen...being a solid reliable guy isn't a bad thing but there's probably some unfulfilled promise there now.

Brady Skjei's better than him anyways :colbert:

I mean he's still a top 4ish dman I think who is reliable defensively. It's not like he's a bum. But yeah we envisioned like a 40 point two-way guy which sadly it doesn't look like he's going to be that.

I watched every second live of the 5OT Flyers/Pens game in 2000. Ended around 2:30am. I was 16 at the time, so the lack of sleep wasn't as big of a deal going to school that morning. Plus everyone else was tired too, so it worked out.

That summer I went to a hockey camp in Ontario, and Ron Tugnutt, the Pens goalie in that series was one of the guests. We had a Q&A with him, and I asked a question that to this day, I still kinda cringe at. With a stupid grin on my face and my Flyers hat on my head, I asked him:

"What was it like to play five overtimes and lose?"

There were laughs, groans, and an "ooooooooh" from one of the camp directors. He laughed it off, or at least did a good job doing so, then went on to discuss playing in that game and whatnot. He autographed a Blue Jackets pennant for me, as they just joined the league and he was I believe was their first goalie. He thought the pennant was cool.

So yeah, Ron Tugnutt is a good dude.

yassssssss this makes me happy

something i've been meaning to mention here. i noticed the pens using an interesting system for PKs during the CBJ series. i'm not sure if i just hadn't noticed it during the season or if it was new. it looks like instead of a traditional box structure, they had both forwards play towards the center of the ice. the higher forward would follow the puck to put pressure on the carrier, while the lower forward would move to weak side to clog lanes. tbh it seemed pretty ineffective and looked like it made it easier for CBJ to shake coverage since the pens forwards would be constantly roving across the sides of the ice. anyone else notice this? is this something new, and what's the strength of this system?

It's basically a diamond formation and it's used to pressure the top of the pk and force them into mistakes. You see a decent amount of teams using it now because a lot of powerplays use more of an umbrella formation where one guy is up top passing to a one-timer option on his left or right.

The disadvantage to it is because it's more aggressive it means a quick passing PP can make it look bad. The advantage is when done well it forces teams into rushed passes and can often take away one-timer passes from at least one part of the ice.

Box formations do a better job taking away cross-ice one-timers but they lack pressure up top which can be a disaster against a good passing PP. Torts used more of a traditional passive box with his players and the disadvantage there was they gave the Pens PP all day to pass the puck around the perimeter and worst of all they gave Kessel room to skate the puck off the ice and try to penetrate the box with shots/passes. If you let Phil do that, you're in trouble.

I'd say in general the trend these days is towards aggressive pks that play more of a diamond formation. Teams are all about trying to pressure the top of umbrellas hard to force turnovers. You don't see a whole lot of passive box pking any more.

Sharks Eat Bear posted:

thanks, makes sense. i think their PK may have just been poorly executed, because I don't think they really maintained the diamond formation very well at all iirc. seemed to me like the forwards were both often in the middle of the ice, with one higher near the blue line and one more in the slot

yeah the CBJ really gave the pens PP too much space. caps have been much better at pressuring their PP in the past, which causes major problems because the pens essentially don't have a zone entry strategy on the PP

My take on it is the Pens pkers have been pretty bad all year about choosing when to pressure and when to back off, and the result is they get caught in the middle too often where they're both not covering lanes but also not sufficiently pressuring the puck carrier. When not executed properly a diamond pk is a disaster and you'd be better off with 4 cones just sitting in a box not moving.
