to think of the storied history of the past 30 or so years of X-Men comics, decided almost entirely on John Byrne going into business for himself for one panel.

??? I'm curious as hell about this now that you say it.

when jean grey first became phoenix she flew into space and consumed a sun, which destroyed a nearby planet populated by broccoli people. that wasn't in the script, byrne just thought it'd be interesting to throw in. jim shooter demanded that jean grey be killed off as punishment for committing planetary genocide, hence the dark phoenix saga and the death of jean grey.

Isn't it down to John Byrne specifically more than Claremont? He seemed to be the one who couldn't let sleeping Phoenixes lie, although now that I say that I'm genuinely not sure if that was a mandate so she could be around to join X-Factor.

the mandate was "X-Factor is going to be all 5 of the original X-Men or it's going to be nothing" because that's what Bob Layton wanted.

and then Bob Layton bounced from the book after issue 5 and Louise Simonson took over so OOPS

So whats up with Kid Cable?

The way I see it playing out is a role-reversal of the original Cable story, where now his former students are the ones teaching Cable to be a more rounded, empathetic person.

Also, even if I hadn't seen a solicit basically spoiling it, this week's issue of X-Force would already have all but outright said that Stryfe is back, baybeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

e: Also apparently X-Man didn't poof away all of the mutants because X-Force is still beboppin' around, they referenced it this week too.

Mr & Mrs X #8 was another really good issue. I love me some Mojo nonsense, but it's also moving their story forward and has some old-school references to Remy and Gladiator, and even Ricochet Rita, with some fun homages in Mojo's scenarios too.

Shatterstar also ended strongly, having been such a fun miniseries.

at this point it's particularly ridiculous with the X-Men because I'm pretty sure every remotely popular member of the team has died and come back at least once

like, honestly, you'd expect them to be treating it the same way as Dragon Ball Z by now, where everyone just kinda goes "oh yeah, death, that's a minor inconvenience I guess"

I guess knowing that everyone's much more excited about the story by a bunch of other people running concurrently with your run and/or are just waiting for Hickman to come along and do another franchise-defining run after you probably isn't the best space to be in, creatively.

Somehow what I hate most about that whole loving run is that Doctor Nemesis was in it. At least everybody else had been in lovely stories before, but he had been pure up until now, uncorrupted. He even had the good sense to wear a face mask so Greg Land couldn't give him that awful smile.

the actual way Hickman is going to explain how this whole run of Uncanny didn't happen was it was all one of Doctor Nemesis' hallucinations after a particularly rank batch of Ultracoffee

at the end of Mystery in Madripoor, after Betsy regenerated her original body using Sapphire Styx's psychic energy, the final page of the series was the Kwannon body holding a dude up at knifepoint and asking him a question but I don't know if anything that followed ever established if that actually was Kwannon's original consciousness or whatever

I dip into Marvel comics much much less frequently than I used to but always had a soft spot for the X-Men, particularly Nightcrawler, who, as I understand it, has died, been dead, and has come back somehow? I'm certain I have that wrong, and feel free to leave me in my ignorance unless some kindred soul feels like giving me the skinny. Anyway, I noticed him in Gold and read a few issues of that before getting distracted and losing the thread.

I saw the SDCC announcement of the new titles and teams, and noticed an absence of Kurt. I can't be his last remaining fan, can I?

kurt had his own solo miniseries in the Age of X-Man books and he's in the big cloud of characters in the X-Men title series slide.

I think Roth was clearly making a joke but I do think the people who act like the actual comics side of Marvel Comics had completely abandoned the X-Men for the past decade in favor of the Inhumans wasn't really paying attention.

Marketing sure, absolutely, but there's been at least like 5 concurrent X-titles running at any point in time.
