I am a fan of the X-Men! Not reading the current titles, but I keep an eye out like a hawk for an opportunity to jump back in. Them getting rid of the young versions as I hear they may do, that might entice me.

What's the deal with aloof magical teen looking returned Jean Grey? She looks like Hope Summers, this Jean is probably younger looking than young Jean. I like Jean like I like my coffee. Old! Old as hell! I for one will not stand for Jean being an ominous magical girl! It's 2018, we have to move along, let Jean just be a relatable empathetic person. Once you are writing about a person with a personality, you go from there, see where their live goes.

This is just nitpicking conjecture based on previews and what I've gleaned though, can't weigh in on Taylor's writing. The vibe I get is not drawing me in though. It seems like it's a Buffy season 6 thing or something? Does everybody have to do this when they come back from the dead/the space place, it's not that big of a deal. Or even if it is, you've just gotta live life Jean. No don't act like you're going to fight Storm in the preview, that's boring. Do something that matters or makes sense. This is your mostly uninformed rant ramble, from somebody who had that Jim Lee lunchbox. X-MEN!

I'll add to the Claremont love, he rules. One of the best runs ever. Morrison's run is not my thing, but I certainly dig that it was a cohesively written run that would be a bounce back from the last few years on the books, with a style for that time. Just not the vibe or direction I myself would've wanted. I also enjoyed X-Treme X-Men by Claremont at the same time, for the most part.

By the way, now that Ottley is done with Invincible, I'd like him to draw Uncanny X-Men after his Spider-Man run. And it should be written by somebody cool and fun, I'll say... Dan Abnett.

On runs of similar quality around that time, a big one for me is John Wagner on Judge Dredd, and co-writing with Alan Grant for a while. With an assist by Pat Mills. In 1978 and 79 when X-Men was getting really good, Judge Dredd was getting really good as well with The Cursed Earth, Day the Law Died, and whatnot. And guys like Brian Bolland, Carlos Ezquerra, that run kept getting better and better too. Miller on Daredevil is another run that stands out above most Marvel/DC stuff at that time for me. Likewise with the literature and cinema influence mentioned with Claremont there.

I guess what I'm saying is that didn't really like the Morrison run that but I am sad that no one has been able to permanently take the X-Men in a New Direction so that they could avoid recycling or maybe finally succeeded their goal and be able to move on.

If you haven't, I recommend checking out Invincible. It's a superhero comic with the relationship and day to day stuff we dig from X-Men or Spidey, and it does all the stuff you're saying you'd like as well. Wrapped up recently at 144 issues.

I read Invincible and it is good, but, whenever I go back to finish it, the misery of the situations wear me down till I stop. It's kind of like 90s Spider-Man in that sense. It's a good book, but it suffers from just so many bad things happening to the main character all the time that it does tire the reader out. Eventually, I'll finish it, though.

I felt that way a bit, especially since I'm always really rooting for Mark and Eve, but, without spoiling anything, you may dig where it all goes, I sure did. Kirkman even comments on this a few times in the letters column, he's like, what kind of monster do you guys think I am? When things don't go as darkly as anticipated etc.

It came to mind since it does tackle the idea of trying to really end the big problems, and really changing things. Though in the case of X-Men and similar books, ending the big problems could mean the end of the book I guess. But since everybody loves the downtime issues, in general writers and editors might remember that, and not throw horror at the heroes nonstop.

Good stuff. I'll add, if starting at Giant Size #1 and you don't feel it for a while, it gets better quick. Comparing the writing in issue 99 to issue 129 for example, it really improved a lot. It felt very retro or I guess of the time at Marvel to some degree at first, but then it became very ahead of it's time and more consistently excellent to me. 129 is where that Dark Phoenix Saga trade paperback starts coincidentally.

It introduces Kitty so well, along with Emma, Wolverine looks at porno mags and argues with the clerk, issue 129 is mighty fine.

A friend of mine helped get Revolution X in a local arcade, and they lowered the volume on that really quick. I myself could go for any amount of Colossus HWOAAAAARGH, it's beautiful.

And speaking of that game, reminds me of Pryde of the X-Men. As fun as that is, and I love 80s cartoons, I'm sure glad that didn't get picked up, and we got the 1992 X-Men series. It's funny, Pryde felt more like a cartoon from 85, while being from 89, and it's wild how much presentation and style had changed by 92. Though having that cast from the great comics run is cool. Was great to see Colossus in those cameo roles in the 92 series, always need more of that guy.

And he's having a bit of a renaissance on the big screen at the moment. Always label items in the refrigerator...

Gotta be the OG, I don't want a Cyclops that missed the 80s and didn't wear a cool jacket in the early 90s.

(the OG from our perspective as readers I mean)

So are they getting rid of the darn time displaced X-kids yet in this relaunchboot? That's my Moby Dick right there, I only need one Jean and Scott and whatnot, except for special weird occassions, let's get rid of the kids. Are we getting rid of the kids?

I was hoping there'd be one X-Men title with more of the people I want to see on the same team. As it stands I think I'll wait until December when I'm told they'll collect the whole house/powers series, then once the monthlies begin I'll just wait until this thread tells me if one or two are particularly awesome. Does anyone know if Wolverine is getting his own monthly title, or just a continuous feed of weird minis like Logan and Loki, Blade, Cap, etc.

In general it does feel a bit like that in recent years. Kind of picking a few out of a hat for each book. One thing I notice is across the line, you do have the entire nostalgic X-Men TAS era line-up, scattered around. Plus the 80s favs Pryde and Colossus, just missing Nightcrawler. I wonder what's with the Marvel Girl thing. Not to make fun of older readers by any means, it's just interesting that you'd have to be about 65 to have read the new issues with that look. And not as timeless as some oldschool designs, seemed retro in it's appearances in the 70s.

Happy to give these a try, though the main book doesn't initially give off the vibe of being a smash hit. But that's just speculation. I think part of what made Hickman's Fantastic Four so good was that it was so true to it. Mixing up the status quo and whatnot is great, but the backbone of these books should be that it's the ongoing story of these people living their lives. Since that's considered what was so special and revolutionary about these comics at their peak. That and the imaginative adventures, allegories and whatnot along the way.

It feels like a lot of X-Men books have been mission books in recent years. I don't think that's what a main X-book should be though. Seeing a bunch of gloomy looking dudes on the moon doesn't scream that Hickman has nailed it here. Why are they on a boat in Duggan's book. I love One Piece, don't get me wrong, but you travel really fast in a sci-fi vehicle, you don't even touch the water, it does not make sense folks. And speaking of One Piece, I'm fine with Luffy getting new powers, but I hope Wolverine's Hot Claws are quietly retired some time soon. It'd be like giving Batman acid spit or something. Yes I know that sounds cool.

Sure this is a long post, I'm not the writer here Hickman, you're supposed to be the writer. He reads this right.

My hype is increasing a bit after catching up here, like that big image saying every X-Men character will be around in the main book. That's cool. Hopefully this Hickman era goes well, and if there are missteps they get to stick with it and adjust things.

Random question, any thoughts on Fraction's X-Men run? I know the Greg Land art is awful, this was badass Cyclops era though at least. Though pre-Gillen. Probably skippable? The status quo sounded interesting, though I also see a bunch of events go through it, like Dark Reign. I assume that will still be a hurdle in Hickman's upcoming run.

A lot of little runs also aren't talked about much, like Aaron's Amazing X-Men (also has a boat on the cover), and X-Men volume 4. I did like the first issues of that, some touching Wolverine/Jubilee stuff, I checked out with the Atom battle thingy though.

Maybe a more general question, any X-books post Carey and Second Coming that you dig? I know the Domino and Gambit/Rogue books have good buzz, I still need to check those out. I did enjoy Gillen's run, though AvX was of course dumb, while fun at first. And I still need to read Remender's Uncanny X-Force. Good ol' comics backlog.

One more thought, what do you think of Kid Cable? Since he's featured on two covers. I just read some interview with Brisson, how young Cable killed old Cable for being "too soft" on time stuff. I gather he brought back Cyclops, but killing ol' Cable is odd. I guess we'll give this character the benefit of the doubt under a new writer. Still, gotta be one of the stranger pieces of recent baggage. And dare I ask what's going on in Major X, which seems to have old Cable?

Cool, I'll put those X-Force series on the list. I do like how the art in those sometimes looks like a 2000AD comic. Having a 2000AD writer like Spurrier is also a bonus. I think I'll check out issue 500 and whatnot of Fraction's X run too for fun.

Will be interesting to see how they do it for sure. X-Men being it's own playground of ideas, hopefully it gets to do it's own thing. Not having half of them end up central in Avengers 5 etc. Just listened to Chris Claremont's first episode on Jay and Miles, thanks for linking that with the Fallen Angels episode a bit ago, I've been digging those a lot. Chris was saying how at the time in the 70s since X-Men was an afterthought, they largely weren't allowed to play with Avengers and FF's toys, and had to come up with their own stuff. Which suited them, and they could do pretty much anything they wanted.

The Marvel cinematic universe, while a slam dunk, has been the Avengers series. That's the rhythm of it, but that doesn't fit the X-Men. I don't know if they'd practice much restraint there, but it'd be nice to have a few X-Men films not built around The Avengers. I also need more of the brilliant Deadpool adaptations Fox was making. I say they deserve a free pass to make one more of those, even if it's set in a defunct universe. They got caught in an awkward time.

Enjoyed reading the responses to House/Powers of X in here by the way, intriguing stuff. I'm gonna read the series later on after some older X-stuff, and will leave much of it unspoiled, the excitement around the mystery at the beginning is cool though.

What was this again, details on his body count? I see he's in the X-Force comic for Dawn of X, hopefully he gets rehabilitated. Just about everybody seems to have gone off the villainous deep end at some point. Still, Magneto is one of the classier members of the team.

In general when I see characters like say Xavier mentioned to be terrible, I think let's take their crazy lives with a grain of salt. Lots of writers, lots of dramatic ideas, we've gotta give these excellent characters some leeway for past actions. Wild stuff happens out there.

And agreed that Magneto is the man, on the Magneto talk, great great character. Rooting for a flawed and in real life terms not good character is fun. Morrison's reading in that quote to me is too literal of a take on the character. It's like talking yourself out of a great thing.

It's cool that there are multiple readings, just Grant's take there to me is a bit overly blunt and missing a lot of what people dig about Magneto. He's embraced all sorts of nutty comic book things over his years when it tickles him, especially gold/silver age stuff, he just doesn't happen to dig on Claremont Magneto I guess. So we disagree there.
