Actually, I think Sojiro leaves early the days you invite Kawakami over. And why does everyone seem so... weirded out? It's not like Maaku invited Kawakami over to... *ahem* 'handle a broom', so to say. Junpei fucked around with this message at 23:21 on Aug 15, 2017 |

Firstly, I apologize for the spoilers, which have been excised. Secondly, this is one of my favorite links in the game, both gameplay-wise and story-wise. I may have been a bit hung-ho because of prior knowledge of all the perks as well as how it unfolds. So I wasn't actually defending something like this happening in real life, I meant it more as a "Don't worry, it gets better" kind of thing.

Small little link between both breakdowns: Kamoshida says something along the lines of "I have committed acts unbecoming of a teacher", and Madarame says the same thing, just with "teacher" replaced by "artist".

Of note: The fake Phantom Thieves request was the focus of the Day Breakers OVA we got a while back. And the names of the siblings are a reference to another SMT game: Devil Survivor's manga adaptation named the hero Kazuya, and a plot-critical character is the PC's cousin, Naoya (the name of Makigami's brother, revealed in Day Breakers). Although there, the douchey one is Naoya, not Kazuya.

I'm gonna quote/paraphrase something someone said in the Bravely Default thread, which has a similar situation to the Ann/Yusuke problem mentioned here:quote:As for the nude modeling scene that keeps getting called out, THAT one stems from cultural differences affecting what is or isn't acceptable for humor, especially on the sexual front- This is the same Japan that, in the new Dragonball series, had Master Roshi win a fight through implying the intent of sexual assault against a female opponent and played it entirely for laughs. This year. It isn't tonal dissonance- it was intended to be entirely humorous, with Ann's distressed reaction being part of the 'joke.' Sexual humor with unwilling victims is something that seems to have not picked up the same stigma in Japan it has in a lot of the western world over the last ten years, although I don't know nearly enough about Japanese culture to read anything into it. It's more a problem in localization, and one that probably wasn't quite as obviously problematic in 2016 as it is now. Oh, and I'd like to clarify two things about these scenes: 1. In the anime driving cutscene, only Ryuji and Maaku were actually staring at Ann's boobs. Yusuke was looking at the see-through-via-sweat back of Makoto's shirt. 2. I actually know a friend, IRL, who, when confronted with even a mildly "homo" situation, will act basically like Yosuke. Call it demeaning or homophobic all you want, but it isn't at least unrealistic.

He also, as demonstrated in the previous update, is incapable of talking to girls without his mind immediately jumping to "does she do porn?" Well, Mishima is sort of assumed to have been the male volleyball team member Kamoshida beat on the most, not to mention being made his personal assistant of sorts, given that Kamoshida asked him to doxx Maaku on his criminal record, and Kamoshida's abuse has been going on for a while. Assuming Mishima joined the volleyball team at the beginning of his first year, Kamoshida's abuse has to have been going on for a year and a half, roughly. That's going to do serious damage to anyone's self esteem. And, to be fair, Sean Chiplock does a bang-up job as Mishima (although that may just be because I loved his work as Revali in Breath of the Wild and Rean Schwarzer in Trails of Cold Steel.).

I will admit, Keith Silverstein (said English voice actor) manages to really SELL Shido later. Oh, and there's actually a little pun with Shido and Toranosuke- The character for the "Shi" in "Shido" is for "Lion", and the character for "Tora" in "Toranosuke" is for "Tiger", which adds some contrast between the two in the Japanese version.

Y'all seem to be conflating "sympathetic" and "redeemable". I feel bad for Akechi, he really was dealt a lovely hand. And this moment actually hit me pretty hard. But I don't think he deserved redemption. This sacrifice was, ultimately, just him entrusting his goal of "taking down Shido" to the PTs.

Okay, moving this away from "this plot is bad and the writers are bad", how does Akechi KNOW Shido is his father? Did he sneak some skin or saliva sample while he wasn't looking for a DNA test? Does he remember what he looked like from when he was a child? Did his mother tell him what his dad looked like before she died?

Morgana would just sound like a cat to the audience. So, minor bit of "Culture explanation" about the Daruma doll thingy: In Japan, Daruma dolls are used for when you make a promise or have a goal. You paint in one eye of the doll when you declare what you're going to do, and then you paint the other when you finish your goal or plan. In the whole Palace, the minor treasure have been from one-eyed Daruma dolls-all of Shido's unfulfilled promises of good for the country

And now I have this stupid idea of an alternate universe Akechi being unable to admit his hairline is rapidly receding and those beautiful golden locks starting to fall out when he reaches his mid 20's which leads to his hair style becoming slowly more and more absurd with each episode of his detective show. Shido's last revenge from beyond the grave will be the male-pattern baldness he passed down to his son. I always thought Shido was either like, 50, old enough for baldness to not be unrare, or he shaved his head intentionally.
