Question, did Mishima's information arrive that late, or was it a case of you finding out seconds before receiving a message from him? It's set up like he's a joke, but it honestly seems like he would've been a huge help if we're stuck finding information by this point.

Makoto. :allears: I hope she's our next party member because she'd fit right in this group of Scoobies.

I also like this scene in contrast to Yukari dragging the MC and Junpei to the back alleys of Tatsumi Port Island to find clues for finding Fuuka. There, Yukari had some idea what she was getting into and still insulted the punks to their faces, with Junpei getting punched as a result.

Here, Makoto clearly has no idea what she's doing, and she was only aggressive about getting information about the MAFIA, with the shady guy just walking away in disgust. She comes across as more naive than stupid.

Got to be honest, Ryuji is my least favorite character right now. Between constantly shouting sensitive information, him getting angry and defensive over the others pointing out it's his fault Makoto caught us, the lack of foresight to change out of his uniform so he won't stand out, and his whining about changing targets just because it's hard to find information on them makes him the biggest liability in the group.

Does he get any better later on? Or is this a case like Yosuke where Ryuji is better written in his Confidant scenes?

Ryuji is a very realistically written teenager. Like Yosuke, the narrative kind of makes him looks worse because somebody has to be the default mouthpiece or first idea, like how Yosuke has to point out all the obvious ideas that get shot down for the investigation to move anywhere.

Aside from his lovely attitude towards Kanji, I was okay with Yosuke. I think the difference is how their blunders affect the party.

For Yosuke, the worst that can happen with him having the wrong theories for the case is that someone gets thrown in the TV (not counting King Moron, since that's a copycat). Even then, they still have a chance to save that person. And even if the cops knew what the party was doing, I don't know if they'll be punished that harshly since they're saving people from being murdered.

By contrast, Ryuji's carelessness has almost cost us everything, and it's only pure luck that Makoto wants to give us a chance. If it had been Akechi or the cops, it would be all over for the party so we really cannot afford anyone finding out.

That's a valid outlook, but it's worth noting that there probably wouldn't be a party without Ryuji. His "EFF THE MAN" attitude was the driving force behind the Phantom Thieves' initial determination, since the protagonist is the usual mostly-mute blank slate.

Unfortunately a lot of plot turns in this game hinge on stupid contrivance, and Ryuji tends to be the tool used to get them going. He's still my favorite of the Best Friend trio on top of Junpei and Yosuke.

Yeah, didn't someone point out that it was Ryuji's rant early in the game that gave the app the keywords to Kamoshida's castle? I do get his role in the party, it's just that plot contrivance is making him look real bad to me, and it sounds like it's going to be like that for a while. *sigh*

The only thing I can think of is they could maybe try following Sojiro around when he goes to give some of the food he bought to Futaba. But aside from knowing where she lives now, I'm not really sure how it would help with the rest of this case.

I'm trying to be charitable to Ryuji here and consider reasons why he might be acting this way:

- He's an immature lovely teen
- The heat of the desert and the length of the dungeon is making him hot an irritable
- There's been a lot of annoying puzzles and death traps
- Maybe he doesn't know how to deal with someone who asks for help but pushes those who want to help away?

But the fact that going through the dungeon means he's seen what Futaba's going through and heard how people are awful to her, and how none of the team have reacted in a similar manner makes Ryuji being an rear end in a top hat here stand out more. It's also weirdly inconsistent because he dropped a "gently caress!" when he heard how people were awful to Futaba to show that he cared about her problems.

Huh, so the Mom Cognition here is really just a manifestation of the false guilt those assholes gave to Futaba? I honestly thought it would take a darker direction and it would be revealed that Futaba's mom implanted part of her psyche into her child right before she died, and the Thieves had to exorcise it from Futaba.

While I'm all :wtc: towards the assholes who tried pinning them murdering Wakaba (because let's face it, that's probably what happened) on Futaba...it also seems kind of contrived, I guess? I mean, that's Wakaba's funeral so we can assume her relatives and close friends attended it, including Sojiro (I forgot if it's mentioned, but is Sojiro supposed to be Wakaba's boyfriend?). It just seems really silly that not one of them even tried stopping or punching the assholes for even daring to read a suicide letter blaming the dead person's daughter to her own face.

Again, I'm also guessing that no one wanted to make a bigger scene since it was at a funeral. More realistically, the memory we're seeing may still be a little fractured or not even complete. The part where Wakaba's family has these assholes escorted from the premises was probably not in Futaba's memory, because the reading its self is where all her guilt is linked to. She probably didn't see that part or remember it because she was in shock and shut down at that point. All we have to go on are the words that caused her pain and we're not seeing the rest of the scene at this point, assuming we ever will.

These are fair points. I just find it a bit hard to believe that Sojiro would have just stood there and let the black-suited assholes read even a couple words of that hosed up letter without interrupting them with a well-deserved punch. Maybe it's like what you said, Sojiro could still have done that but Futaba was still too traumatized to notice people had defended her.

Compared to his usual role in party scenes where he's this one-note "Have I mentioned I want to eat?" character, I kind of prefer Yusuke in his Confidant scenes here since he feels like an actual character.

So wait, maybe I'm not remembering this correctly, but isn't the deadline to finish Futaba's palace about two days before the deadline with Medjed? Assuming that Futaba will recover the day after her own deadline, won't the team not have enough time to find out Medjed's identity and do something about them?

Sadly, I feel like Yusuke and Hifumi would end up filling the same role in the party (though maybe Hifumi won't end up blackmailing the party, so that's a plus on her). They both seem like great characters in their confidant scenes because it actually focuses on exploring their character arc.

But if Hifumi had been the party member instead, I can totally see the main writer reducing into someone one-note whose only contribution to the party is shouting wacky chuuni lines.

These past few updates really makes me think that the writers painted themselves in a corner with the Medjed subplot. We've seen that #Millennials have no idea who Medjed is, or even how to track them down. For all they know, Medjed's members could be in different countries. Also, Futaba's month-long coma just adds to the silliness because the gang doesn't even bother trying to think of a back-up plan. Not to mention that if Futaba recovered the day after her palace deadline, that still leaves the gang a day or so to deal with Medjed.

I can see how this helplessness is intentional because the writers want the Thieves to depend on Futaba and her skills, but it's kind of absurd just how much they took this to an extreme.

For some speculation, I'm guessing that Medjed might be an AI or a huge secret data server that's being used by Sae's boss. I'm basing this because of how short a time the gang has left to deal with Medjed after Futaba recovers, and also how confident Futaba is that she can find/deal with Medjed.

And maybe once they're done with her Palace, Futaba would release a statement on the internet as Medjed saying how the Phantom Thieves helped her and all that.

Like maybe this was all supposed to be a convoluted plan because it's part of how Futaba doesn't really know how to ask for help.
