This FNM change is going to be a non-factor for the majority of stores. The type of people who specifically come to FNM for the good promos are usually the types of people I'd rather not have come to FNM at all.

Those basic lands will be the only ones I use if I can get enough of them. The scheduling restrictions on Standard Showdown are stupid, and actively hurting the event type as a whole. There are too many events on any given Saturday.

The advantage Magic has is that it's not tied to a separate IP. The Pokemon TCG lost momentum back when people still considered Pokemon to be strictly a child's thing. Now it's picked up momentum again. Although YGO's problems stem from being run by Konami, which is a shitshow of a company.

Force of Will had a legit chance, in spite of it's cringey art, until bad decision after bad decision killed the playerbase's trust in the company.

Oh, and becoming a Force of Will judge was hilariously convoluted and frustrating.

Becoming a magic judge is still a shitshow for what it is.

No, it isn't.

To become a Force of Will judge, you had to volunteer (without any compensation) at one of their AGP events. Then you had to pass a rules test, which includes questions about rules that aren't even used in the game anymore. Also, that test has to be translated twice. First from Japanese to Italian, then from Italian to English. The person testing you doesn't even have the answer key: The Italian judge guy has it. The person testing you has to take a picture of your answer sheet and send it to the Italian.

Of course it is. The mentoring system is designed to keep it clique-y and at its lowest levels is pretty pointless. (What reason is there outside of being a store employee for being a level 1 judge?). The road to being a level 2 judge is paved with rear end kissing and volunteered time. Despite the written core values and all the smiles, there is definitely benefits to current l2/l3 judges to making the process for new judges suck.

So you couldn't pass the L1 test? Got it.

Trying to find some ones in the budget deck that might be somewhat competitive at local modern tournaments and maybe have some overlap with one of the higher end meta decks to put me partway though building one.

Dunno if I'll touch standard at all unless I really get back into going to tournaments (casual play around here is almost entirely modern and commander). I just know that if I get back into the at all I'll at least want to build something I can at least pick up the occasional win with at local tournaments and poo poo, since I know once I get into any game I get into a competitive mindset about it.

Storm is a good deck and is pretty cheap, as far as meta decks go. If I build another deck it will probably be that Serum Powder Eldrazi.

Standard is actually pretty good right now. I'm gonna miss Approach of the Second Sun in the fall.
