Yeah, this was really weak, and this is coming from someone who would likely give him a chance if he seemed sincere, in a heartbeat. He's not worried about the effect of his position or how they align with this bunch of vile creeps. He just doesn't want to have the infamy of sharing the boat with the chuckling edgelords. It's about image, not content. Or maybe the Patreon money is drying up and he can't quite catch the loudest assholes, so he needs to figure out a new space to occupy. The "reasonable, non-Trumpster Skeptic" sect, if you please. It just might have enough people to fill an average pool.

That is part of it, but not the dull concept. It has to do with the structure of narrative, how making a compelling villain can bite you back when applied to historical figures/movements, and such. There's a reason Darth Vader has always been cooler than Luke Skywalker, and when you translate that outside of pure fiction... poo poo, I remember when American History X came out and pretty much all of my teen geek friends couldn't shut up about what a badass Norton's character was, how he had a hot girlfriend and banged her really hard and how rad it was that he made some thug bite the curb. So it does chill be a bit to see it referred to again in our current context.

A year or so back, long after I had unsubbed from Thunderf00t, he popped up back onto my feed debating Sargon over the Brexit thing. I was tempted to give it a watch, if only to see how he tried to juggle being an 'unbiased rational' while offering enough red meat to the Sargon fans to poach a few. In the end, the prospect of having two smug voices dueling to see who could poo poo better inside my ears won out and I never watched it.

RLM is usually way above, say, South Park in their humor style. They do feature a lot of gross/mean thing, but the point is that those ARE gross and mean things done by awful people. They don't pretend it's cool or edgy or even offer a "sensible middle path" like South Park. They are not ultra-progressives, granted, but they don't have to be. Rich Evans openly called several alt-right 'skeptics' morons and doubled down on it onscreen. Mike even admitted to being disturbed by the 'hidden' message of Starship Troopers (Violence solves everything, go with the vile status quo, actually caring gets you killed). They even said that the female Ghostbusters cast was one of the few good ideas in the remake that could have elevated it somehow if it wasn't so crap in every other level. They bring up issues like sexism, racism and such often, but don't really linger on them, which is fine because they are cinema buffs talking about movies and geek stuff. That is not to say that tons of edgelords can't ignore that and see it as a defense of their poo poo. Mr. Plinkett is in dire peril of being the new Pepe, is what I'm saying.

Spoony is a sad case. His stuff had a good level of effort and humor, but as others said, the type that gets an outlet doing online stuff is not usually the same type that gels well with other people. I remember seeing some messages of his on Twitter about trying new medication and hoping it was helping, but apparently not. Shortly afterward he was screeching at someone merely for saying that honey doesn't ever go bad, because it would not survive the heat death of the universe. Depression PLUS anger management issues is a combo I'd not wish on anyone. As for Metokur, I just saw him on a Sons on Kojima episode as he bragged about dunking on perennial wanker DarkSydePhil, and he seemed way too happy to bully losers and toot his own horn for being an internet warrior, so I'm not surprised he turned out to be a shithead. And even the SoK turned out to be a bunch of edgy, toxic assholes. Are youtube celebs just broken people, or do 'real' celebs benefit from having less exposure and PR machines that deal with their poo poo in the backstage? A question for the ages.

Gotta say I was disappointed by TAE's Matt Dillahunty's view on thealt-right shitlords. I like him fine, but he seems to have taken to that academic, bloodless view of valuing terminology over meaning. "This guy hates and wishes death upon gays, communists and jews, but NOT gypsies. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience call him a nazi, and if you do, you are a moron and a liar, good sir!" The fact that several of his fellows guests might have been moderating their discourse in a mixed event, compared to spewing straight bile when in their own echo chambers, also seems o have sailed right over his head. He could at least have given credit to, you know, people who actually -have- watched their material, which he admits he did not.

This will get a lot worse before it gets better.

Baked Alaska's gibbering livestreamed walk after his twitter ban was legitimately scary. Like, literal stream-of-consciousness ranting about communists tearing him away from his 'family', trying to work up USA-USA chants in the chat, the works. All while roaming around parking lots, roadsides and such. It'd actually be less creepy if he was crying of raging, but there is a weird detached vibe to him that really does make me believe he'd pull out a gun and shoot up people without ever breaking a sweat or having some inner conflict over it.
