this is illegal right?

so this nz company called fibre tv nz sells them for $400 but they appear to have put their face on the UI or something and what they don't offer is nz channels streamed but u can see everything else. it's a legit company coz they have a phone number so i wonder if they skirt the legality by only streaming international poo poo?

but i found out u can buy these little android things for around eighty bucks and my mum got one and i guess in a couple days imma see how it works

surely this will get shut down sooner or later? it's the most accessible piracy i've ever seen

i tried to ask the sales rep how u can stream netflix for free when u normally pay for it and she just dodged the question and said well the streams are just there and as long as u don't save then u ok

basically the law hasn't been written to deal with these things at the moment?

its like one half using public and semi-public legal streams eg off the big tv network sites and one half straight up piracy

anyway lol no one should really pay money to have it installed on things because it takes like 20 minutes to do it and a middle school kid who can read instructions will manage to get everything set up. doesn't stop people from paying for it tho

Still better than android clock

quote:

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/business/android-box-free-tv-bell-rogers-1.4033741

Cable giants won another victory today in the legal battle over fully loaded Android TV boxes. The Federal Court of Appeal in Montreal quickly dismissed an appeal of an injunction banning defendants from selling the controversial devices.

Cable companies and content producers Bell, Rogers and Quebec's Vidéotron won the temporary injunction in June after launching a legal case to stamp out the Android box business.

Because the appeal has been dismissed, the defendants — about 55 Android box retailers — will continue to be blocked from selling their devices during the duration of the case.

Once loaded with special software, the Android boxes allow users to easily stream pirated TV and movies on their televisions — all for a one-time fee, typically around $100. The devices have become a scourge of the cable TV industry, especially because they're often marketed with slogans such as "free TV" and "never pay a cable bill ever again!"

The case already has resulted in consequences for Wesley. The defendants got hit with a $5,000 fine for court costs.

"I fought them and I actually stuck my neck out," said Wesley. But, as a result, "I'm pretty much at the end of my finances."

Wesley said he may eventually close up shop and give up the Android box business. "I don't really know where we go from here. It doesn't look very good."

on the one hand gently caress the cable company oligarchs but on the other hand lol when your business model is copyright infringement as a service

has anyone ever gotten sued for watching stuff on those pirate streaming sites? torrent people get sued because "well you're uploading our movie to 1000 people and technically cost us $20k", but with streaming what are you going to do? spend hundreds or thousands of dollars dragging people into court to argue that they owe $24 for those episodes of better call saul they streamed?

i think it's less "they aren't uploading" and more "maybe we shouldn't spend sixty-four million dollars to sue for about a mil and a half in damages"

NHL pirate streams come litterrally from nhl.com's CDN cause they're too lazy to enforce stream endpoint counts.
