My Twitch Prime legendary chest item was the Sad Cloud mount. :smithcloud:

Kind of depressing and sort of didn't want it because I'm depressed frequently enough without a :smithcloud: to ride around on, but more depressing would be spending coins and rerolling for stuff on heroes I don't own. At least mounts are semi universal.

Is there some select-a-map mechanic in Quick Match they've added that I've missed or something? In the past eighteen hours, I've played six rounds of this game, and each and every one of them has been on Cursed Hollow. I'm loving sick of this map, even if it's the most traditionally Dota-like.

Not really because it seems to breed this "all in middle" mentality. I've been by far the the worst player on my team as Sylvanas because Sylvanas sucks a 5v5 Mosh Pits and all my games just look like giant deathmatch screaming back and forth across the map.. At least in the dragon statue one people split up.

EDIT: Just queued up. Cursed Hollow, again. All mid, again.

Queued up as Tracer now. It's Cursed Hollow again.

I'm going to send a support ticket. I just keep getting this map over and over.

I wonder if this is intentional because I tell teams that spaz out over losing that, first of all, it's just quick match, and number two to not expect too much of me because I main Dota and only come here to chill and not get sweaty. If I got reports for my attitude, I could see a GM in a mood to troll giving me the game's most Dota-like map on endless repeat. I don't know if it's technically possible, but it's either that or a bug or really poo poo luck.

My problem is, I'm not a new player. I've been playing on and off since beta and have a level 69 profile. And this only started with the Hanzo/Holiday patch.

EDIT: Ticket submitted. I didn't want to look dumb and send one and then get another map, but I can't keep playing this game any longer if it won't give a little variety.

QM Matchmaking is also totally, completely hosed. Not in a "qq there were three specialists on <team>" way but it seems like they reset everyone's QM MMR, so level 1 players were being thrown into matches with level 600 players. This happened multiple games in a row and it was NOT due to people queuing up as a group. It wasn't matching them up in a fair way either, like in one match the entire enemy team was below level 100 and as low as level 6 while my team was all level 300 or higher and it was a total bloodbath.

Yeah, I saw this. I normally see a level 100-300 profile in my games but last night had a game where the other side had both level 700 and a guy over 1000, while I was the highest of my team at 68 and combined we wouldn't make 100. We sort of just fretted around for a bit and fed a few times and then let them charge in and wreck the place.

QM doesn't guarantee you a healer or a tank. It only matches like to like. (And recently it doesn't seem to be doing even that well.)

So what do you play if you don’t have any friends who like this game but are interested in a balanced team? I only play QM because I’m an old fart and remember when I didn’t own enough heroes to play anything else. They eventually relented and let people pick like 20% of the roster to unlock, but I still keep playing QM mostly because I just focus on the daily gold quests until I unlock all my personal favorite characters.

Which will take approximately forever, so I might as well ask about the alternatives now.

Like the example that got brought up earlier re: tanks, to some guy at Blizzard it probably makes perfect sense that tanks should be graded on soaking damage and using cooldowns as often as possible, but it's not hard to imagine that actually it's probably a sign of better, more efficient play for tank players to not soak a bunch of damage they don't have to and to save their important abilities for when they're most impactful, but if Blizzard decides that their vision of the game is the correct one then guess what that means?

Well, the best players know what they have to do and whether they care about being rank 1 world or just being ranked super high is on them. What matters most to them is going to be tournament play, and they’ll do what is most likely to win rather than what gives the highest MMR gains.

The person at the very top had to be good to get there, even if they cheesed the factors the system grades on to get that spot. It’s sort of like how the #1 Ranked Hearthstone player day to day isn’t always the most valuable tournament player, but they’re clearly better than all but 500 or so people.

There's no reason for "things that give you good MMR gains" and "things that actually make you a better player" to be operating on separate axes, is the point.

But there is, because otherwise every change to talents, abilities, stats, etc doesn't change what the hero is supposed to do. This is the most outrageous example to prove the point, but if in theory they accidentally give Hammer the ability to be the best healer in the game in the hands of the most talented player, that doesn't mean she was intended to become a support. If you want a game where heroes actually shift their entire purpose every time a balance patch is out and the company threw the entire concept of roles out of the window, go play Dota2. You will find a game where last week's team-slaughtering high damage powerhouse is this week's preferred low damage disabler/healer, and the entire concept of roles has been abolished.

And as much as I loved to watch TI4 Support Jugg, as pro-play so out of left field that other pros disregarded it as a prank at practice, I'd actually personally rather play a game where roles are strictly enforced. Because that kind of "you figure out what it should do" design adds a lot of complexity that, again just to me personally, is cool and awesome to watch and way too frustrating to actually play.

(Warning: This is a salty "I never win" post)

As a Quick Play player, my ability to make progress has been stymied by the fact that I haven't been able to get my First Win Of The Day bonus for week. As in, I haven't actually won a game this week.

Seems like people keep picking King Chin and using one of his talents like an Armlet of Mordiggian. Either that or the teams are really unbalanced in terms of gameplay experience levels against my team, or the other team's most experienced play is playing support and is an escape artist. Either way, I just can't win any games of this game anymore, and poor Tracer just keeps eating losses and can't quite make that last half a level to level 5.

But really, get rid of that talent. Armlet toggling against fatal damage doesn't feel like it has a proper place in a game targeting such a low barrier to entry that they don't have an item store or buybacks. Sometimes I feel like this game can't decide if it wants to be super casual or if it wants to be as hardcore as it's competition, and it often makes the worst decisions in both directions.

Apparently all I had to do was pick the talent tree that my gut thought sounded right instead of repeatedly picking the one the TenTonHammer guide chose and suddenly I went from back of the pack to holding my own. v:shobon:v

I think the problem with Chin is that I've watched him shrug off so many Pulse Bombs. Armlet toggling is like one of the Dota things that I never thought I'd see in this game. I mean this is a game where a Raynor can make a solo run to Hyperion your nearly dead core, and even if you kill him the dumb battlecruiser doesn't go away and you still lose.

So long as Blizzard keeps getting expansion fees for OWL teams and there’s cities without a team where a businessman wants one, they’ll probably do fine. OWL was initially turning down requests; some of last year’s LA Valiant were on the team Rogue and Steve Aoki wanted to turn into a Vegas team bu was disbanded when Blizzard didn’t want a team in the city. Better idea: Play DotA, which as much as it sucks now, is still better than lol.

Dota has the most fun heroes to use ability-wise, but the actual gameplay mechanics are adhering so closely to ancient tech that it’s a ratio of how fun the flavor of the month stuff is, versus how stifling the stuff handed down from Warcraft is.

When 7.00 was announced, long timer goons talked about how long it had been since 6.00, how the game was leaving the classic WC3 map behind with Monkey King and other changes not being backported anymore, and what radical ideas might be in store. I suggested an end to the stacking mechanic for neutrals, because it’s not fun and feels more like work and clearly exists completely because Warcraft 3’s ancient engine respawned NPCs if their spawn point was cloaked and the NPC had pulled away to chase. People treated me like I’m nuts, and I’ve had endless bad Dota related posts (so many that people chase me around to other threads and urge people to ignore me because of my Dota-related shitposting) but I still believe “Hey, let’s focus on phasing out bizarre Warcraft 3 engine phenomena” doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

My experience always ended up being something like: get into a huge team fight, everyone pops their skills, and then no one dies and just goes back and heals.

FWIW, my funnest game was that one Diablo map with the two titans battling in the center. All ten people got into a huge teamfight and nine players died but our team won the objective, leaving a lone and crippled Kharazim on the enemy team to ineffectively try to stop our titan from crushing the remains of his base.

It had all the joy of a self-sacrificing megacreeps play, without me having to be good enough to pull one of those off.

Then they kept spending money on fluff material like comics and poo poo as well.

Remember this? People praise Riot for the production of their music videos and whatnot so I get where the impulse comes from, but Blizzard was doing stuff that looked expensive and could have gotten commotion for a more popular game, but because they were making expensive trailers for a lackluster game all they did was drain the budget it needed to improve upon itself.

BattleHamster posted:

Part of the problem with HotS is I don't think Blizzard really knew who they were targeting. They were often torn between a large contingent of players who wanted something less complex and those who thought the skill-cap was too low.

To me the real problem was that the game was forced into existence by executive embarrassment at letting DotA slip through their fingers. Before it was Heroes of the Storm, even before it was Blizzard Allstars, it was "Blizzard DOTA" so the attorneys could claim ownership of Valve's trademark.

Blizzard does pretty good job most of the time because it makes games that they want to make. This is not a game anyone wanted to make, this is a game that ownership wanted, and Blizzard put together a group of people to try to do the best they could with a concept that wasn't theirs. Obviously the company didn't have prior experience with FPS shooters either prior to Overwatch, but that was a team that wanted to make that game. Nobody really wanted to make one of these kinds of games, but somebody had to because Icefrog got away. So grab a bunch of people who would have been working on Starcraft content and had no prior MOBA experience, make them play 100 hours of League, and then have them brainstorm ideas to make the game more widely playable, then execute.

Capitalism is what enables people to take high risk moves, which often benefits society.

The problem comes when you apply a just world theory to how the winners and losers are chosen, and believe the losers need to feel the consequences of their losing to prevent irresponsibility. When that happens, risk shrinks and low-risk reward is all you see. Like what’s happening everywhere right now.

People could drop in and drop out and be replaced. Stress is a much smaller problem when you can leave at any time.

The key cause of the stress is that some people play video games very much to win and other people just do it to play the game the way they like, and matchmaking queue systems like the major MOBAs and Overwatch crowd those people together and force them to play together with punishments if they simply get tired of each other. I'm frequently most deaths on any MOBA team regardless of role or hero because I play everything I play Quake 1 DM: frantically clicking and moving around spamming attacks at everything I can see, regardless of how outgunned I am. I very rarely prioritize survivability, because surviving in video games isn't a fun concept compared to ADHD-fueled, push-buttons-faster, Yippie Ki Yay Motherfucker antics (consequently games like Don't Starve and it's ilk I don't even bother with, and my interest in Counter Strike lasted seconds after I noticed I didn't respawn immediately.) I can understand that people who want to play to win would get tired of playing with me getting jollies playing the bad way that gives me personal enjoyment but doesn't frequently lead to wins.
