My last remaining grandparent passed today, and I kinda felt this was an okay place to remember him. He taught me that old cars were great and you could fix anything with bondo and duct-tape, and to always laugh at everything especially Serious Stuff. He surfed with the old California icons and fiberglassed boards for movie stars in Malibu & Hawaii back in the day. He lived for the water. Don passed away sometime last night in his sleep, at home, less than two miles from the shorebreak. He was an ornery cuss until the end and I will always remember the one heartfelt peice of advice he ever gave me:

"Get a screw-off job, so you can hit the beach instead"

His garage at the end:

Late 1940s/early 1950s woodie (Plymouth IIRC)
Some kind of surfer rat-rod Model A
1967 Impala convertible
1987 Jeep Wagoneer
Jeep CJ3B
Corvette C4
3rd gen 4runner
A wrecked Hobie Cat lodged down in the creek/canyon runoff below his house :v:

Surf well man, I hope the curl breaks late out there.

Thanks for the Grandpa condolences dudes, it was appreciated. He was definitely one of a kind. In his honor I already had a hotflash about putting the corvette engine into the CJ3B somehow since they are both pretty trashed and destined for the junkyard or come-and-take-it craigslist prices anyway. Too bad the CJ has an engine compartment appropriately sized for it's stock I4.

Taking pictures while working on cars is something at which I am VERY BAD so I wish I had more snaps. Here goes:

Incidentally, I will always love these because gramps had one a lot like it and used to take me to the beach in it :3: That thing is dope man.

Friend of mine with more money than he knows what to do with has a big interest in getting this old firehouse and living in it while converting the lower level into a full-on wrencher's paradise. I'm egging him on hard because living vicariously through a friend who has a firehouse seems like a good idea.

An old firehouse came up for sale near me some time ago, up a really neat old canyon area. It had two engine-length bays and the offices or whatever had already been converted to living space/kitchen/etc. Only a single floor, and a lot smaller than that one though.

They were asking $800,000k - I am a generally content person but I am still filled with angst that I didn't have the means to buy it.

And that's kinda the point... We're sitting back and mocking and they are putting high speed rail and renewables on the menu.

Right, but if a highspeed train crashes in China and your Uncle is killed you will probably get drunk and smoke a cigarette and go to work the next morning (at the highspeed-train railswitch factory). If a highspeed train crashes in the US and your Uncle is killed, you will immediately retain a lawyer(s), create a class-action lawsuit and sue any corporate entity who ever touched that train into oblivion.

The Industrial Revolution only happened because lawsuits weren't A Thing at the time.

Maybe it's just growing up in southern cali but pretty much all I drink anymore is Mexican beers. Montejo, Tecate, Pacifico, Modelo, etc. Got the right amount of German influence and can still be found all over for cheap to reasonable prices. No Hopocaust TripleIPA Hopdeath influence either, which is a trend I am anxious to see die. There's a lot of good breweries down here that sell in major stores now, but it's just a row of double IPA with a few other things thrown in.

No sir, I'm sure its them being incompetent, not your poo poo attitude causing them to do the minimum to help you. And fyi, I'm doing the minimum necessary until you leave my store, despite knowing half a dozen places that could custom fabricate what you want for cheap. gently caress off and die.

Edit: Also, know what loving year your poo poo is for sure and don't change it 3 times in 5 minutes. And don't argue when I tell you a 350 wasn't factory in those years. Fuckstain.

Hah. The guy at NAPA today was pleased I had part numbers for things I had already checked were in-stock at that store.

I also ordered an alternator bracket tensioner bolt thing from the Toyota dealer yesterday, by part number over the phone. The parts guy asked which shop/account I was with, and got confused when I said "I'm just a guy..."

When I was going to the gym a lot I used to order custom protein mixes in bulk from https://truenutrition.com/p-1126-custom-mix.aspx . You can pick your own flavors/sweetener types/etc, I liked the milk protein a lot.
