One gripe I have is that I feel like they made Mantis a little too dumb. I get that she's supposed to be extremely sheltered but they took it to dumb blonde territory in some scenes. I did find it funny that Drax has seemingly gone from this dense rear end guy to some master of wit simply because he found someone dumber than him to lord over. You're beautiful, Mantis... On the inside

TrixRabbi posted:Did anyone else get an uncomfortable, old Hollywood style orientalism coming from Mantis or was it just me? Yeah I did too. From the trailers I was kind of assuming the character would be a little more badass and proactive. The other element of it is whenever you have Empath type aliens they are almost always female which reinforces women being compassionate and nurturing. Yondu could connect with Rocket, but it was because of shared, similar experiences that connected them. Mantis could connect to Drax because of Empath powers. It kind of took away from nice bits where they talk about the relationships between different family members or the roles unrelated people play in forming familial bonds with each other.

Nail Rat posted:I just want to know why nobody knows who David Hasselhoff is but they know what scotch tape and tasers are. I'm assuming they heard it from Quill since the guy goes on and on about 80s Earth stuff. He might have had some passing dialogue with Sovereign earlier 'please don't taser us' or something, or maybe the pirate started calling himself taserface because he overheard kid Quill saying it. All the characters involved had interacted with Quill at some point previously, so they probably picked it up from him.

They missed an opportunity at a PBF comic joke where Quill barges in on Teen Groot watching a video of a bee pollinating a flower only for Groot to alt tab out of the video awkwardly while getting all huffy about personal privacy.

Another element to the film was the theme of conception. Ego just sprang into being, and not knowing his purpose or history bothered him. Drax mentions how talking about the story of when you were conceived is seen as a beautiful thing, and it ties into how Quill was conceived out of love between his parents (maybe it was 'love' that was the real secret ingredient to making another Celestial?). Drax pokes fun at how uncomfortable Quill gets about thinking of his parents having sex. Thinking of our parents as sexual beings is taboo in our culture, but it is ironic because they had to be that way to create us. For all the moments Drax has about jokes he seems pretty on point when it comes to loving your family and mourning their loss. Ego loved Quills mom, but not so much he was willing to stay on earth and live out a life as a human. It is a contrast to the godlike immortal super beings in Hancock who paired off and died out in order to experience love.
