Hello May thread I am here to inform you about the single most important release of this month: That of visual novel Dies Irae on Steam on the 31st. It is longer than the King James Bible, will not contain porn until months from now, and features Japanese teenagers fighting Nazis with magic or something.

On a less yea/nay stance I ask: what game that wasn't put out this year have you guys been enjoying most so far? Or do you folks here play exclusively new releases? On my end I've been chained to Euro Truck Sim 2 again as it's soothing and great for podcasts, but I've also been dipping my toes into wargames with Panzer Corp and Ultimate General: Gettysburg. (Mostly 'cause I've been listening to a strategy game podcast and it convinced me to check these out.) I'm really, really bad at winning battles or wars, but it's fun to try, and I appreciate how easy these games are to pick up and play for a newbie.

To elaborate: Disgaea is light and goofy and fun. If you have a serious range from Final Fantasy Tactics this is the opposite end, where Disgaea is goofy and anime and you play it to watch numbers go up. It's got charming animations/sprites/styles and the plot isn't the bad kind of anime, it's more of a kid's show in a sense. (Etna's design as an unfortunate aside) So basically yes it is good. You might not like its style or humor, but there's a pleasant amount of stuff to do in it without too much grinding. It's a good time and I'm glad to own it.

chumbler posted:So is the second. I cannot speak for the later ones. I can't speak for the rest of the Disgaea games but Phantom Brave: good and sad Soul Nomad: incredible Makai Kingdom: kind of light on story but the base mechanics absorbed me utterly (I like vehicles in the Phantom Brave format?) so that's five games right there you could have a good time with if you enjoy 'em! (...well if you have their ports/a PS2. NIS needs to hurry up on porting them to steam.)

Wamdoodle posted:I always wanted to try Soul Nomad because I heard the evil path gets really dark. Also the full title sounds like a high school garage band: Soul Nomad and the World Eaters It has some of NIS' most experimental, interesting systems, the good path is fun and worth following, and the evil path is one of the best/worst evil paths I've ever seen in a game, to the point where I didn't finish it because I'm not a monster. (I didn't finish Undertale's evil path either, and I can't do bad things in Mass Effect, so I'm definitely a weenie when it comes to this.) Basically NISA's been porting their classics but the underplayed genius games have yet to be released on steam and the wait is quite painful.

I tell you one of the nicest experiences in gaming for me was when I could make a fairly accurate reproduction of myself in Dragon's Dogma and then play as that character. It was nice to actually see myself in a game when usually I can play as a dude or a lady who does not have my figure - and it really made me think about how this much be how most fit white dudes feel when they play games? They can pick up almost any game and go "ayup that's me" without much trouble and that's... I'm jealous of that!

Lurdiak posted:A big reason customization options are so limited in Saints Row 3 and 4 compared to 2 is that the devs checked their stats and something like 80% of players didn't do any customization at all and a significant percentage of those that did just kinda changed hairstyle and hair color and dressed their guy in jeans and a t-shirt. Why are people so unoriginal My problem with Saints Row 4 is that I kept changing my character/gender every fifteen minutes so I could have a new boss

Today I discovered that they taught an AI to play Go and it's pretty good at the game. On the one hand, neat! On the other hand, I can't figure out why this is more significant than any other game with AI players? ...Call me uninformed but I can play chess against a computer, so why should this be significant?

A recent game with excellent gameplay length: Hitman 2016. The main game and story could be over in less than ten hours, give or take. The rest of the game - doing challenges, boosting levels, escalations, contracts, the fun of dicking around in levels - easily adds on another 50-60 hours or more - and it's all optional. I can devote as little or as much time as I want to it. I really, really appreciate this. It feels like a game that respects my time. This is part of why I love roguelikes, too - they're usually built to be done and over with in bite-sized pieces UNLESS I get good and have a character that'll take hours for me to play with. I don't have to specifically set aside four hour blocks of time to live with the game like I do with, say, Witcher 3 - I can be in and out real fast unless I'm in a place where I can settle in and just go for hours. I'm probably not saying it well, but basically: I love games that are easy to pick up, play, and finish without dedicating months of my life to them, and so I've kind of lost interest in jrpgs unless they're specifically tailored to me for some reason.

I haven't played it myself but the main flaws I hear about it are that the setting is initially bland.

My roommate sometimes make these fancy burgers that have like, diced onions and peppers mixed into the patties, but I'm super lazy and I don't do any of that. I just take the ground beef, smash it into patties, a little salt and pepper and chuck em on the grill. I don't even oil it or anything and the come out super good. You're doing the right thing. I don't get a grill out, I just fry up the ground beef patties in a frying pan on the stove in a little oil. Makes for some pretty satisfying quick burgers!

So I've been wiki-hopping and I found this article about player types made by a guy in the 90s. And it's fascinating? I'd mark myself down as a Socializer if I had to pick one (as I love games that are heavy on stories - and experiences I can then relay to friends, like cool deaths in roguelikes) but reading out the other types and thinking about that is just cool. Although this test thinks I'm an explorer - but it seemed to be more oriented towards MMOs than the kinds of games I prefer to play. I'm not into collecting bear butts or games where you're in multiplayer all the time.

The White Dragon posted:it's pretty cool but according to that test, i'm basically tied between achiever/socialiser(but they're opposing on the chart?) and i'm more of a killer than an explorer, which is strange, because the only time i've ever griefed was when a brief stint where i followed high-level players around in ff11 dressed as a male stripper and /danced. personally, i'd identify myself as a socialiser/explorer. but like you say, that questionnaire seems to be weighted towards an mmo experience. Yeah, no kidding. If I'm playing Borderlands with friends (shush it's fun) then I don't bother to read the dialogue, we're here to shoot things. When I play alone, I read every line. ... I'm not the smartest player on the block but listen: unless it's a tabletop game then no one cares about the deep writing in a game if they're playing with pals. That said it would be cool to have a lore/exploration heavy game (Minecraft? Terrarria?) where you go around exploring and learning things with friends instead of killing crabs.
