I have to give Prey credit. It's pretty ballsy to make a spiritual successor to System Shock 2, a game heavily criticized for its item degradation, be focused entirely around breaking down items.FirstAidKite posted:Sorry, I thought I'd made it clear enough When people found out that the Steam Greenlight game Anubis and the Buried Bone was secretly a furry porn game one of the creepier things about it was that the name of the company releasing it was Kemosho Co, which is a portmanteau of 'kemono' (furry) and 'shota' (pedophile)

The premiere ep of American Gods was amazing and one of the things I love is the way they updated the character of Technical Boy. The book came out in 2001 so he was a fat neckbeard in a trenchcoat modeled after the people Neil Gaiman saw at conventions, in the TV show he's a Polygon editor who vapes and has thugs that look Superhot baddies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIExWPy1XSw

Growing up I was told a Vietnamese parable: hell is a bunch of starving people surrounding a bowl of rice who are unable to feed themselves because their chopsticks are too long to reach their mouth, while heaven is the same only everyone is well-fed because they feed each other. MOBAs are also the same, only everyone uses their chopsticks to jab the other people in the eye because they want the rice all to themselves.

Jay Rust posted:Has anyone touched a physical game magazine recently? Have they changed much in the past fifteen years? The last time I read a game magazine was back in 2008 when I finally let my EGM subscription lapse. That might be a special case because by that point 1up.com was already cannibalizing all their staff and even though there hadn't been an official announcement until the last magazine a lot of long-running talent like Shoe and the guy who made the Hsu and Chan comics were leaving on their own because the writing was on the wall. Also publishers like Ubisoft had just straight-up stopped sending them games because they were so critical. Anyways it was super disappointing compared to even a few years previously. In the early-00s an EGM during the holiday season could easily be a 300+ page tome full of Content and their reviews were fantastic because they basically ripped of Famitsu wholesale and had long in-depth reviews by four different people for each game and always went to the trouble of assigning at least one big fan/expert of the genre and one relative newbie or outsider as a contrast. Then they re-designed the magazine to look more flashy and it also started having a lot more ads and less content, even the reviews were scaled down from 4 critics to 3 and they were given way less space for text. By 2008 magazines almost never broke 100 pages outside of the holidays and they were more ads than actual content, I think they still had Seanbaby doing stuff for them but it was obvious that there just wasn't money there to produce enough content to justify paying for it. Especially when almost all of their stuff wound up on 1up.com for free. From what I understand game magazines as I remember them are basically dead in America. There's Game Informer, which is a glorified advertising platform that most people get because it comes for free with the Gamestop membership the cashier browbeat them into getting, but other than that it's mostly niche hobbyist periodicals.

I only go to McDonalds a few times a year and it's ridonkulous that it's like 8 bucks for a sandwich combo meal and even basic cheeseburger is up to a dollar now. I could run into Publix and get a tray of freshly-made sushi for like five bucks and it would probably take less time than the drive-thru, y'all goofed up at some point. It's especially silly watching The Founder (it was just OK but Ron Swanson as one of the McDonalds brothers was awesome) since the entire reason McDonalds even became a thing was because it was fast and cheap and now neither of those apply to it.

On one hand it's cool that this weird Japanese survival horror game managed to somehow become A Thing for an entire generation of people but on the other hand I kind of want to shake them and be like "Pyramid Head worked way better as the avatar of James Sunderland's guilt! Microsoft gambled on the idea that the brand name matters more than the people who actually made it good in the first place and lost. Meanwhile Sony focused on keeping the actual studios even if it mean losing the brands, so Crash Bandicoot faded into obscurity but Naughty Dog kept printing month with their new franchises.

Halo and Halo 2 were so popular, beloved, and influential that acting like they were always bad and never had any redeeming qualities is just baffling to me. It's like saying that the first two Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies were objectively terrible, even if you personally didn't like them and they haven't aged amazingly they're still something that even almost 20 years later you can still see the DNA of it in new things that are coming out.

wizard on a water slide posted:Honestly re: waiting on Prey, major studio games are made, sold, and supported in such a way that it's basically better to just stay perpetually a year behind the new release cycle unless you just absolutely have to be part of the conversation or multiplayer scene when a game drops. Most games cost less, are less buggy, and have more content if you wait to buy them. It rules. Also anybody who is already invested enough in a game to drop $60 to buy it at launch week is somebody whose experience is too effected by hype and expectations for me to take seriously, you need the people who get it a month later for half off at the very least before you start getting more balanced opinions. Remember how for like a week after it came out Resident Evil 7 was the best in the series and the greatest horror game in years and was gonna single-handedly save VR then after that nobody really talked about it or cared, or how Mankind Divided and FFXV being unfinished piles who weren't worth it didn't really start getting traction until the holidays sales?
