The hits keep on coming, keep on coming.

Edit: https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-05-01/trump-says-he-s-considering-moves-to-break-up-wall-street-banks

quote:

President Donald Trump said he is actively considering breaking up giant Wall Street banks, giving a push to efforts to revive a Depression-era law separating consumer lending and investment banking.

“I’m looking at that right now,” Trump said Monday in an interview with Bloomberg News in the Oval Office. “There’s some people that want to go back to the old system, right? So we’re going to look at that.”

During the presidential campaign, Trump called for a “21st century” version of the 1933 Glass-Steagall law that required the separation of consumer lending and investment banking. The 2016 Republican party platform also backed restoring the legal barrier, which was repealed in 1999 under a financial deregulation signed by then-President Bill Clinton.

A handful of lawmakers blame the repeal for contributing to the 2008 financial crisis, an argument that Wall Street flatly rejects.

Trump officials, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, have offered support for bringing back some version of Glass-Steagall, though they’ve offered scant details on what an updated approach might look like. Both Mnuchin and Cohn are former bankers who worked for Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

I have no loving idea.

quote:

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday sent a congratulatory message to French President-elect Emmanuel Macron after his victory on Sunday.

In a statement, Putin wished Macron “good health, well-being and success” as president, adding that “overcoming mutual distrust and joining efforts to ensure international stability and security is especially important.”

Macron took a hard line on Russia during the campaign, accusing his rivals of kowtowing to Moscow. It was widely suspected that the Kremlin supported Macron’s far-right rival Marine Le Pen during the campaign.

In the run-up to the second round vote, Macron’s team barred Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik from campaign rallies because of their “systematic desire to issue fake news and false information,” a Macron campaign aide said.

On Friday, two days before the runoff vote, a trove of Macron’s campaign emails was leaked on the internet. A New York-based cyber intelligence consultancy, Flashpoint, said there were indications a hacker group with ties to Russian military intelligence was behind the attack.

Maybe I misheard, but the reporter went to ask a question like "does the coney firing cast a shadow over..." and he interrupted and either was misinterpreting the question as "are you asking me if he was fired? Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see him mocking our democratic norms, whatever they mean by that.

My takeaway is that Lavrov doesn't give much a poo poo about the perception of this, whatever his message to Trump might be. I only posted McDermott's particular tweet because it was the first one I came across with actual video.

No. God loving dammit, no there is not. This has been the case from November, and to one degree or another, every last Republican has become complicit in this. They will do absolutely anything of whatever legality to the point going full-blown fascist to make sure their party sees no consequences for playing a role in this drama. That turtle fucker has already gone out and dismissed the possibility of a special prosecutor after an action that would put Nixon to shame. It is a party that does not deserve to exist, and has been for decades, frankly, but the obviousness of their corruption and malfeasance has pushed us to a tipping point. Rats, all of them.

But here's the thing: so long as Republicans feel that they can survive while sticking with/ignoring Trump, they will. They'll passively sit back while Trump does one outrageous thing after another.

It's a simple calculus. If a possible voter backlash against Republicans in general is less likely than the certain backlash they'd face if they impeach their own president, they'll stick with Trump every time.

And given that he just fired the head of the FBI (the guy in charge of the investigation into his possible collusion with Russia to swing an election), I don't know what, if anything, Trump could do that could push Republicans any further. So we're going to have to wait until 2018 at least to see if a general backlash is possible. Which also means we're in for at least another year and a half of Trump doing real harm to Americans and Republicans folding to Trump's bullshit.

poo poo phrasing on my part, because this is (partly) what I meant.
