So who was the person on the phone with Booper that he thought was Jeffries? Seems really late in the show to introduce a new player so it must be someone we already know. Assuming we believe the tea kettle, that leaves ... who? Garland via some afterlife shenanigans? The giant? My guess is Leland. It makes no sense for him to only appear in one 5 second scene this season so he must feature in the last few episodes. Maybe he's trying to sabotage Bob-dopplecooper as some type of redemption?

So, we know that tulpa-Diane was deceptive and dishonest at times with Cole et al. What are we to make of her claim that Janey-E is her sister? Why would she reveal that if she was essentially in thrall to Booper?

I guess it makes sense that they're estranged since if they had kept in touch Janey-E would have picked up on Diane not being herself. But, assuming they are sisters, how and why did Booper arrange to get Dougie and Janey-E married? Why her?

I mean, that would kind of suck. Every in Lynch films that have kind of used that trope there was a large portion of the movie outside of the dream / fugue state to give it all meaning and relevance. See Lynch's daughter's film "Boxing Helena" (with Sherilyn Fenn, no less) to see how lovely a film feels (and how poorly it's reviewed) when a movie ends with "and it was all a dream".

That said, there is a reference to dreaming, to the world being a dream, characters saying they feel like they're in a dream, almost every episode. There's something there. I have the barest hunch about what all the dream references mean but it sounds too dumb to say aloud so I'll just wait and see.

So, one of my two theories about the finale. The less stupid of the two.

All the "continuity" errors in the Diane scene. The weird timeline fuckery all season. The backwards blinks throughout the season. The weird glitches during gunshots. The Double R customers switching. The multiple versions of the police after they rescue Naido. What has been the recurring theme of this season? If anything else, it's certainly in large part about dopplegangers and the idea of doubles or pairs, which has been a theme throughout Twin Peaks: the two versions of the giant. The two sides of Philip Gerard. Twin Peaks and its shadow version at the beginning of FWWM. Two roles played by Sheryl Lee. Hell, the twins in Invitation to Love. The Horne brothers. The casino brothers. Diane and not-Diane. I think the doppleganger aspect goes beyond Coop. I think the world, or reality, has been doubled or has a doppleganger. It was created when the atomic bomb was detonated. Or maybe when Coop went into Dougie and Booper remained, which was never supposed to happen.

Sometimes we're seeing events in reality a, sometimes in reality b. Dougie is hanging out with the casino guys and is playing catch with his son at the same time? It's because it's two versions of Dougie. Probably most events are almost the same but sometimes they differ and that's when we get those weird glitches or inconsistencies (Diane's texts from Booper having different capitalization, for example). Maybe the backwards blinks or gunshot glitches are when we're changing which reality we're currently seeing.

It would explain a lot, though I don't know what the ultimate end game would be for this scenario. My impossible dream would be that after the finale Lynch announces there's another set of episodes online, with many of the same scenes, but what we discover is that any given scene is in a different version of the reality than the televised version and it's up to the community to ultimately make sense of which scenes belong to which reality and recreate the actual narrative from that.

That will never happen and I'm probably wrong about all of it. But I'm enjoying thinking about it.

Random theory: episode 17 ends with Coop going into the Black Lodge to confront mother.

Episode 18 is entirely within the Black Lodge, where mother is essentially waging her attack on Cooper by manipulating his reality, his perception, his mind. And we're left on a cliffhanger, where he is just starting to realize the actuality of the situation ("Wait, what year is it?"). Basically as much of a cliffhanger as S2, including the uncertainty of Audrey's fate.

So ignoring the main wtf-ness for a minute, what are we to make of when the real Diane returns? She and Coop share a very passionate kiss. Were they in a relationship? If so, when exactly? Because Dale is definitively single when he meets Annie (at least, I can't comprehend of a universe where Cooper just cheats on his partner without hesitation). So Coop and Diane aren't together when real Coop vanishes, but the kiss is like that of lovers or partners reunited, not friends or an ex (which I'd expect to be more of a strong hug).

It almost seems like Annie was retconned out of the series, except that Hawk actually mentions her in like ep 6ish.

I thought Sheriff Truman had given Ben Horne the room key. In fact I'm almost certain of it. But he had it when Coop asked for it. That has to be intentional, there's no reason to include the scene where he gives it to Horne otherwise.

I wrote a few days ago about my theory that there were multiple universes occurring throughout the season. The key would be another very strong hint in that direction.

I'm bad at using grammar so I might gently caress up a bunch here. But here are my final takes on episode 18.

Cooper hosed up big time.

FWWM ended with Laura crying/laughing in joy seeing the Angel appear. Cooper stands beside/somewhat behind her with a hand on her shoulder. This is Laura's happy ending, one in which Cooper hardly plays a role. Her victory is in her death, one part murder and one part suicide. In her death she, in some sense, defeats Bob by denying influence. Leland is robbed of not only the object of incestuous perversion, but of a daughter who he did truly love. Bob of course lives on in Leland and then Cooper, but you have to imagine Bob would be pretty pissed. He wanted to inhabit Laura because of the pain and sorrow she would be able to create. Leland's primary source of pain and sorrow was generated through his raping of Laura.

Laura's victory also denies the possibility of generational abuse continuing. Leland was abused as a child, raped by the man/BOB at the lake. Leland in turn abusing his daughter, who would presumably continue abusing her own family. From Laura's perspective, she ended the cycle of abuse. As viewers, we know that Maddy in turn was murdered and almost certainly raped, but this act is different from the prolonged and constant abuse of Laura.

It feels awful to write this, but the fact of the matter is that Laura, bludgeoned to death and wrapped in plastic, defeated Bob in a deeper and more meaningful way than Freddy punching him into oblivion. Do you really think Bob is gone? Freddy may have killed him, but, as we know, death is just a change. Laura knew this and embraced it. Cooper did not.

By leading Laura away from her death, Cooper robs her of her victory. He saves Laura, but only from death. He doesn't recognize that Laura, and by proxy victims of abuse, don't need a knight to run in and save them. They need support. Cooper's intervention is futile, Laura has already endured YEARS of terrible degradation and abuse. She's already made her choice. Cooper leads her astray, literally leading her deeper into the woods.

Cooper role is not to lead Laura, but to support her.

My understanding on what exactly happens to Laura and Cooper after he "saves" her is more tenuous. It has to do with dreams, but I think in Lynch's world these aren't just neurons firing while asleep. These dreams are, as Lynch might say, "worlds" where entire lives are lived and universes die. Alternate realities is probably a better term, but that's too sci-fi. The key thing is that the reality of Carrie and Richard is as real as the world of Laura and Cooper. This dream is a fully formed world and, for reasons I don't understand, Cooper is able to enter it. We don't know who the dreamer is, but we will soon find out (Spoilers: Its Laura).

He finds Carrie, who of course is Laura. She doesn't retain any memories of her life as Laura, but there is some recognition when Cooper tells her the name of her parents. She also has a dead man in her house. Although Cooper saved Laura, even in this other world Laura is trapped in the cycle of domestic violence. I'm assuming she killed him, an action I can't imagine Laura taking against Leland (these are obviously very different situations and I can't draw too much of a comparison. The important point is that this is a return to domestic violence).

Once again Cooper leads Laura deeper into the woods, taking her from one place of domestic violence to the place where the story starts. I don't know what to make of the Tremond stuff, maybe something like this dream world is a reassortment of the facts of original world. I'm not that interested in that.

What is important is that Cooper leads Laura back to her home. She is looking at the house where she suffered horrendously. She looks through the window that her father Leland would crawl through before raping her, an almost theatrical addition to sexual sadism. The facade of Carrie is broken when her mother calls out "Laura". She wakes up, the world of Carrie is gone. She's back in the world of Laura.

Now here are some interesting things to think about if we take Judy as "knowing":

It seems that the world of Carrie is ended, totally annihilated by Carrie hearing Sarah and realizing that she is in fact Laura Palmer. The Knowing causes her to wake and the dream to end. So what happens to Cooper? My thought is that he is gone.

Now I'm going to bold this part, because I think most people will be sick of my rambling by this point. I've also included a picture of a cool car for emphasis.

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN
If Judy is Knowing, then we've already met her. Laura decision to die comes only after she KNOWS that Bob is in fact Leland. Judy is the knowledge that she has been being raped by her father. Its not a physical entity, at least not in this case. But most important is that Laura is not destroyed by this knowledge. Laura is able to process her knowing and make a decision based on it. She is able to stand up against this force that the FBI are so afraid of, that destroys Cooper. How can this be?

Laura is the One

This is a great post. Even if I don't agree 100%, there's plenty there that I think is spot on. It also made me realize just how flawed Cooper is. On a first viewing of S1 & 2, it's easy to think he's the perfect FBI agent except for possibly failing his test of courage in the lodge. But really, he has a major Achilles Heel -- protecting or rescuing Lynch's archetypal "woman in danger". He completely fucks up when tasked with protecting Windom Earle's wife. He lets his gf Annie get kidnapped but debatably does play a role in rescuing her. He can't prevent Maddie's murder during his active investigation into her cousin's murder. When Audrey actively needs and asks for his help, he is of no use at so. And following the above theory, where the final scream from not-Laura indicates her waking up to a world where she will continue to be raped, he completely undermines Laura's decision to end her suffering.

Cooper's not great at his job.

2001 is about as mainstream as it got back in 1968 and it's certainly not a straightforward resolution at the end. Or Eyes Wide Shut. Hell, 12 Monkeys.

Slightly less mainstream (or, about as mainstream as Lynch): The Holy Mountain, That Obscure Object of Desire (or any Luis Bunuel movie really), Hour of the Wolf. Waking Life. Caché. Melancholia has multiple readings. Enter the Void.

The whole show is filled with the inevitable approach of aging, fading away, and death and it's amazing that the Dougie plot can touch on all of this while still being super funny. Beverly's husband feels kind of redundant to me in light of how much better the theme is established in other parts of the show.

"Judy's coming, everything decays" works when you read her/it as just a symbol of death rather than a literal alien being.

That's my reading as well. I see episode 8 as an interpretation of the fall from innocence in the garden of Eden. Biblically, man is eternal until he eats the apple (pomegranate, actually) from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, whereupon he becomes aware of life, death, his own existence. He becomes aware of mortality and what it means to die.

In episode 8, mankind for the first time develops the ability to destroy mankind. Before this, any war no matter how large was limited and would have no effect on our survival as a species. But we developed an extinction-level ability and became aware of the mortality of our species. This is what Judy represents: death. Death of the self and of existence. It's no coincidence that Revelation states that Death rides a pale horse and that the image of a white horse recurs throughout the series.

Also I'm drunk so apologies if this is muddled.

James did good to get out of there. I keep expecting Windom Earle to tie one of those girls to the railroad tracks. Twin Peaks's pilot episode is one of the most confident, assured pilots I can think of. Maybe Legion comes close, or (ugh) House of Cards. Usually pilots are very much feeling their way through -- still nailing down the visual style, character interpretations generally evolve quite a bit even though the rest of the first season, even overall tone can change. Twin Peaks knew exactly what it was from day 1. Just a rare thing to see in a television pilot.

The relationship between Cooper and the police in Twin Peaks (particularly Harry) is one of my favorite things about the series, and it never fails to amaze me just how quickly it gets established with almost zero tension or misunderstandings.

I think the relationship is really sold as far back as E1. Coop has the "this is FBI jurisdiction now, you work for me" talk, Harry agrees, and the next line from Coop isn't "ok, here's what I need you to do" or "have Andy do X, Hawk do Y", it's just on to things Cooper finds more interesting, like what kind of trees he passed on his way into town. He's not rubbing Harry's nose in the whole jurisdiction thing or immediately trying to be Alpha Dog, he's just being Dale loving Cooper.

Bit behind y'all, just starting S3 now. Anyone remember the live watch threads where we found out about halfway through the season that one of the biggest complainers on the threads had never watched S1 and 2 and just started with season 3. Haha what a goober. I'm five minutes into S3E01 and this poo poo would be utterly incomprehensible to someone without context.

I figured there was a thread!

I won't be reading it yet, because I'm watching it with a friend and we're still early on (episodes 2–3 of season 2 tonight), but man, I'm obsessed. This show is exactly my poo poo and I can't believe I didn't watch it sooner.

It'll get worse, and then it'll get lovely, but then it'll be amazing, and then you watch the movie and you either think it's amazing or not what you expected, and then you wait 25 years like we did

If this is a promise about season 3, it's a very exciting one. (I was spoiled for some parts of the original series; I know almost nothing about season 3.)

The cool thing about TP s1 was that there wasn't really anything like it at the time -- shot on film instead of tape with mostly filmic production quality instead of the television status quo, surrealism, actual movie stars as characters. In a way it was the first "prestige" show, or at least paved the way for prestige tv. The original run of TP influenced television for the next decade+

Without providing any spoilers, I think TP s3 will have a similar influence. It's at least as far ahead of its time w/r/t production and presentation as the original run was. And there's one episode that I still to this day can not believe actually aired. I have never seen anything like it on tv and rarely in film.
