Possible thermal failure (CPU on fire?)
Welcome to the long awaited Stellaris LP!

What is Stellaris?
You know those Paradox Interactive guys who made Crusader Kings 2 and Europa Universalis IV? Well, in 2016, they took their strategy game knowledge into space. So instead of playing as a historical nation on Earth, you're playing a spacefaring empire starting in the year 2200 AD, exploring the mysteries of the galaxy and meeting alien empires.

I know how popular Paradox's strategy games are in the LP community, and I hope not to disappoint.

Who are we playing?
The United Nations of Earth, except we're using mass drivers instead of the default race's missiles.

Are you using mods?
Nothing that changes the gameplay too much. Here's the mod list:
  • Beautiful Universe 2.0
  • Cat Portraits Dimorphism
  • Cybrxkhan's Assortment of Namelists for Stellaris
  • Enhanced AI
  • Federation Leader Notification Mod
  • Flags: Emblems & Backgrounds
  • Fox Portraits Dimorphism
  • Guilli's Planet Modifiers
  • Increased Anomalies 25%
  • LEX - Leviathan Events Xtended
  • More Events Mod
  • More Star Classes
  • Updated Complete Colors
  • War Name Variety

Will there be audience participation?
Somewhat. At the end of each post, a few proposals will be introduced to vote upon. Ship design proposals may also be submitted when asked for. Don't make any facist, communist, or other authoritarian proposals; these will more likely than not get your representative recalled.

Jan 1, 2200

It has been several years since the invention of the warp drive. The United Nations, the planet's ruling authority, has guided the planet out of the Great Plague that killed billions. Recovery is going well, with the population at 8 billion. Most of the working population are employed in energy production, mineral refining, and food production, with a small subset working on research. The UN has identified some areas of Earth that can potentially increase Earth's output, once the skeletons of dead cities are cleared out.

The UN has five warp-capable ships at the moment: The construction ship UNS Doolittle, the scientific survey ship UNS Gagarin captained by none other than Ludwig Dietrich, the "father of the warp drive", and the First Fleet, composed of three G-100 "Anaconda" class corvettes. Right now, the Gagarin is making a test run, surveying the Solar System. If any resources are found on any of the planets, moons, or asteroids, the Doolittle will be able to construct automated mining and research satellites.

In the close vicinity of Sol, there are several stars that have yet to be surveyed by mankind. The Alpha Centauri and Sirius systems are said to have habitable planets, but they will need to be surveyed before any colonization efforts can begin. While only science ships can survey planets, any ship can add stars to the UN's charts.

The current president is Dolores Muwanga, from Somalia. She has been said to be an excellent navigator of the planet's markets, and has proven to be quite the strong and healthy woman. This is her first ten-year term as President. However, she is just one branch of the UN's government. The General Assembly holds the legislative powers of the government, and private enterprise still rules the economy.

The UN's scientific research and development organization is divided into three departments, each headed by leaders in their respective scientific field. José María de la Cruz leads the Physics department. He is considered one of the foremost minds in modern computer science and theory. Societal and biological research is headed by Jolan Fehér, author of many papers on genetics. The Engineering department is led by Tatyana Zhivenkov, who has been rumored to master any new technology within mere weeks.

It's a big galaxy out there, and the new chapter of humanity is about to begin.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
In this first assembly of the new century, several proposals will need to be voted on by the representatives.

The first proposal is whether to focus resources on creating planetary production buildings, on mining and research satellites, on expanding the Fleet, or saving for colonization.

The second proposal involves choosing the next star system for the Gagarin to survey next. The choices are Alpha Centauri, Sirius, Barnard's Star, Procyon, or Zac'zon.

Finally, we need to choose a project each for all three of our science departments to work on.

Vote in replies.

When it comes to scientific proposals, President Muwanga decides to give the General Assembly's suggestions to the R&D department as is. Field Modulation, Planetary Unification, and Nanomechanics are now the active focus of the head researchers.

A proposal comes from the R&D department to study different types of stars up close now that it's finally possible to get closer to them than several light-years. A second scientific ship is requested, but President Muwanga states that building it will be put on hold until there's a comfortable amount of minerals available for use.

The Anaconda fleet is split up into individual ships and are tasked with exploring the area outside UNE space.

As Dr. Dietrich approaches Venus, he finds that the mineral readings from his ship's sensors don't match what scientists on Earth have theorized. He decides to come back later. Later, he discovers a few oddities on 1 Ceres in the asteroid belt, as well as on Ganymede. Something concerns him about the strange lights underneath Callisto's icy surface. (Forgot to screenshot the Venus anomaly, sorry)

All of a sudden, on the 10th of October, first contact occurs. In the Anreya system, the UNS Patrician reports seeing "strange animal-like things" floating in the outer rim of the system. The biological community is enamoured with this news -- Whatever these creatures are, they're able to thrive in the vast emptiness of space! 19 days later, the UNS Cossack reports seeing a "flash of something moving" in the Ujqiohr system. Photo evidence is transmitted to Earth.

In the first days of 2201, permission is granted for a second scientific vessel to be built, while an automated mining station is put under construction around the asteroid 2 Pallas, which has been found to be rich in plenty of useful materials.

Back on Earth, an old "plaguetown" has been marked for demolition and cleanup. Reports are coming back that minerals that have been yet untouched by man are available in its site.

Dr. Dietrich states that he may have found ample evidence of life on Mars, in a rambling, anxious, and paranoid manner.

Some in the scientific community are starting to state that he's acting unprofessionally now. (The Paranoid trait lowers his research speed by 5% and his anomaly research speed by 10%.)

The new scientific vessel, the UNS Litvyak is put into service. As soon as it's finished, Dr. Zhivenkov requests to transfer to its scientific team. As soon as she arrives on the ship, she begins to head to Alpha Centauri. Replacing her as the head of Engineering research is Dr. Joaquin Batista, a computer expert.

The solar system is finally fully surveyed. Some asteroids have been shown to have minerals, Uranus can be exploited for energy, and Triton is stated to be excellent for mechanical research. The mining stations for the asteroids and Uranus are immediately planned.

Meanwhile, Dr. Zhivenkov reports hearing radio signals from Alpha Centauri I -- signals that sound somewhat like common UNS distress calls.

On December 12, 2201, something amazing occured.

A FTL radio signal was sent to Earth from the star Gonexb, in a UNE audiovisual transmission format, and in English no less!

The avians introduce themselves as representatives from the Turexmian Trading Consortium, a megacorporation of sorts. A greeting from Earth is set back, and all of a sudden the government rushes to create a xeno diplomatic corps. It is a momentous occasion for mankind.

The heads of the R&D department meet with several representatives later in the day, and asks what should be done with Dr. Deitrich.

2201.12.08-2202.07.04
Drs. Zhivenkov and Dietrich continue to survey the local star systems with potential habitable planets.

Dr. Zhivenkov, along with a group of like-minded citizens on Earth, have used the opportunity to create a new political faction called the True Democracy group, dedicated to making sure all sapient beings are treated fairly under the law. (You can either join this faction if you want to, or remain neutral)

Suddenly, border patrols have reported that a large number of civilian freighters from Turexmian territory are on approach. The higher-ups at Customs demand that they be let in as quickly as possible. (All three options have the same effect.)

President Muwanga puts forth a effort to study other planets' past mass extinction events to prevent something similar happening to Earth.

The R&D department puts forth a proposal of their own, to survey potentially habitual planets. As this is already a part of the two science ships' current orders, it's accepted immediately.

The Turexmians have turned out to be economic charlatans, and the energy markets will suffer for a while because of this.

Meanwhile, Dr. Zhivenkov makes some landmark discoveries in the field of field manipulation.

Over in Quylios, the Patrician notices a starship surveying Quylos II. They're given the codename "Delta Aliens." The Patrician is recording radio conversations from this ship and sending them to Earth for xenolinguistic analysis.

Meanwhile, the General Assembly decides what the UN's traditions for this new age should be.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The tradition groups we can adopt are:
  • Expansion: New colonies start with an extra pop. When all Traditions here are adopted, the core system limit will increase by 1.
  • Domination: War Demand cost to subjugate other empires is reduced by 25%, and a +20 opinion bonus is applied when diplomatically subjugating other empires. When all Traditions here are adopted, all research that is not shared between us and our subjects are given a 30% research speed bonus for both parties.
  • Prosperity: Mining station build cost is given a 33% discount. When all traditions here are adopted, Terraforming cost is reduced by 33%.
  • Harmony: All the pops in our empire get a 10% Happiness boost. When all traditions here are adopted, Consumer Goods become 15% cheaper.
  • Supremacy: Border Range increases by 20%. When all traditions here are adopted, the fire rate of our military ships will increase by 15%.
  • Diplomacy: Diplomatic influence costs are reduced by half while trust growth increases by 33%. When all traditions here are adopted, the trust cap will increase by 50.
  • Discovery: Research stations will become 33% cheaper. When all traditions here are adopted, research speed will get a 10% speed boost.

All tradition groups have 5 Traditions to adopt after unlocking the group. When all the Traditions in a group are adopted, we'll have the opportunity to unlock one Ascension Perk. Given all this information, which group do we unlock first?

The General Assembly has voted on Expansion to be the nation's current focus.

Barnard's Star is an M-class star, which makes up-close observations very important to scientists back on earth. The A-class star Sirius A is also of interest. After our science ships investigate those two stars, Llith (a neutron star) and Braikag (a K-class star) are next to be investigated.

Dr. Dietrich hears something coming from a gas giant in the Sirius system.

The Patrician has apparently found the home system of the "Delta Aliens." The radio intercepts that the ship is taking picks up some very interested-sounding and exciting conversations from the planet as the UN ship appears at the edge of the system.

The homeworld itself appears to be the second moon of one of the gas giants in the system.

A few months after the Patrician's appearance on the outer edge of the Malperion system, the home planet sends a transmission in English.

The vulpine seems to be reading haltingly from a script, and trips over several words.

Despite the language barrier, they seem very excited to finally communicate with us.

Dr. Zhivenkov, after researching Barnard's Star, submits a few notes to Earth about stellar fusion. The scientific community states that her observations equate to a few years' research on fusion power on Earth. A few months later, her observation of a planet within its system seems to be of interest to the theoretical terraforming community.

In the Zac'zon system, another species of spaceborne organism is discovered.

Another science ship belonging to another space empire has been spotted surveying the Old'awi system.

A quick diplomatic deal with the Turmexians for star charts is made. It turns out that the only things their star charts had that Earth's didn't is detailed reports about the Gonexb and Iranaro systems.

The "Alpha Aliens," the first sign of life off of Earth that Humans discovered, have been dubbed "space ameobas" by the populace. The R&D organization begin plans to observe them... from afar.

After completing his research on power production methods, Dr. de la Cruz begins working on better machine learning methods.

Yet another alien civilization contacts us, this time the Trinikan Partnership, the appearance of its citizens being laughed at by more immature members of the science community. ("They're talking slugs in suits!")

Dr. Zhivenkov begins to draft a paper on particle physics after observing Llith.

The data from observing the stars is used to tune up Earth's power stations, allowing the energy market to come back from the Turmexians' meddling.

After completing her research on nanomechanics, Dr. Batista sets out to work on a personal project: powered exoskeletons for both military and labor use.

The Zac'zon aliens, now known as "Tiyanki," have been found to be mostly harmless.

Dr. Deitrich discovers evidence of an ancient space battle on Procyon II. In his notes, he writes "To think of that space-going empires of the past fought huge battles so close to Sol is, frankly, frightening. What if instead of Procyon II, they fought in the vicinity of Earth?"

When the UN diplomacy corps speak with Malperdy after some small trade deals (the UN traded a small amount of minerals for a small amount of energy for 30 years), the Kitsu seem happy to see us. Some in the diplomatic corps swear they could hear an episode of the ancient Earth show "I Love Lucy" playing in the background of the office on Malperdy.

President Muwanga gives the Kitsu First Executive Fon Taras a promise not to attack the Assembly of Kitsu Planets, and Fon Taras promises not to attack the UN's territory.

On May 7, 2205, Earth sends its first colony ship to Alpha Centauri II, a planet with dense forests and beautiful lakes. It will take a while for the colony ship to be constructed and to head to the new world, which will give the colonists plenty of time to decide on a name.

  • Open a new Tradition tree? If you choose this one, specify which one: Domination, Prosperity, Harmony, Supremacy, Diplomacy, or Discovery. This will make it take longer to get to the Unity cap again, plus we won't get to an Ascension Perk as fast.

UN Dept. of Foreign Relations -- Intelligence Report
TUREXMIAN TRADING CONSORTIUM

The Turexmian Trading Consortium is based on the oceanic planet of Turexm, orbiting the star Gonexb. Since the Turexmians will not allow Humans on the planet surface, any face-to-face diplomacy on their "turf" is held on Turexm's space station. However, based on conditions on the space station and gravimetric analysis from orbit, we can deduce that Turexm is similar in size to Earth, but with 93% water coverage as compared to Earth's 71%.

The Turexmians themselves are avian in nature, with a bony face and four eyes. They possess brilliant plumage, but are flightless. Their native language is tonal in nature, with one "word" having several meanings depending on the pitch of each individual syllable. They are also able to speak Human languages in a matter similar to some birds on Earth.

All Turexmians are considered property of the Consortium's Board of Directors, and citizenship is based on stock ownership. In fact, stock is used as currency. (Naturally, the members of the board hold 99.99% of the consortium's stock between them, making them the ruling class.) In the unfortunate event that a Turexmian does not have a single share in their name, they are considered "mobile assets," that is, slaves. All businesses on Turexm are considered "wholly owned subsidiaries" of the Consortium. General-purpose robots are also in wide-spread use, but are not allowed to own stock.

The science ships continue to survey around the UN's borders, with an eye for resources and potenitally habitable planets.

Meanwhile, Dr. Zhivenkov, on an expedition on the toxic moon of potentially habitable planet Anreya II, discovers that it is covered in large mushrooms. (I don't know why this event popped for a non-terraformable toxic world.)

On the planet itself, she discovers an ancient metropolis. The structures are empty, but she states that they can be repurposed to save on construction costs, after overgrowth is cleared. The planet also serves as the home to a beneficial type of insect that provides several medical benefits to humans. However, once a set of specimens were acquired, those specimens died upon leaving the planet. (The Symbiotic Organisms modifier provides a bonus to Habitability.)

Meanwhile on Earth, the General Assembly votes to start programs designed to get the populace excited about living on new worlds.

After completing her research on Planetary Unification, Dr. Fehér begins to research ways to make the UN and her colonies more important on the galactic stage. (This reduces the war demand cost for ceding planets and frontier outposts.)

The Trinikan Partnership proposes a non-aggression treaty, which is accepted.

There are reports that the UN's food supplies, once in surplus, are being slowly diminished by the settling of Gaia's Landing. There is potentially arable land on the planet, but it's heavily forested.

In the early months of 2209, there are reports of attacks on civilian traffic. The survivors of these raids say that the name given before the attacks was the "Black Flotilla." The Anaconda fleet is recalled to Earth to begin arming for anti-piracy operations.

A fourth alien empire has been made contact with. This time, xenolinguists have translated the language of the Blessed Parid Alliance. The response to the UN's standardized greeting was best described by one news agency as "composed of fire and brimstone, heavily seasoned with several insults."

A pirate fleet appears on sensor range. The leader of the fleet is identified as Krishna Potti, a fugitive wanted on several counts of murder and theft of UN research secrets by Interpol. His fleet destroys a mining station in the Sirius system.

A colony ship is commissioned to colonize Anreya II, which is given the temporary name Terra Nova.

The UN adopts an advertising campaign to glorify living a life out on the frontier for those tired of life on Earth.

The Turmexians colonize Ujqiohr, possibly as a response to the UN's rapid colonizing of two worlds in such a short time.

Potti's pirates are spotted again in the Sirius system, and the 1st Fleet is ordered to intercept. Dr. Batista, hearing of this, finishes work on Ion Thrusters and begins working on toughening the defenses of military ships.

During a conversation with the Trinikans, they tell us they just met and subsequently signed a non-aggression treaty with the Kitsu.

The first real test of the Anaconda fleet begins.

With only one ship lost, Admiral Judith Lewinson makes quick work of the pirates. One of Earth's more sensationalist newspapers carries the headline "Navy Flushes Potti."

On Earth, a new party arises. Named the Xeno Aid Forum, it states its goals as keeping peaceful diplomatic relations with other empires.

With enough habitable worlds discovered, the scientific community is excited with all the new data acquired. A museum dedicated to exoplanetary life forms is dedicated in Houston.

The Kitsu and the Trinikans join the multi-planet club.

Dr. Dietrich is dispatched to recover the wreckage from the pirate ships near Sirius III. He discovers components not of Human design on them -- in fact, a large piece of debris, thought to be a part of some sort of energy field generator, has Turexmian writing on it.

A project begins to reverse-engineer this technology.

Terra Nova is now considered officially colonized.

Dr. Dietrich stumbles across a pirate station on an asteroid on the Hras system, and the 1st Fleet is dispatched to bring the inhabitants to justice.

After fleeing Hras, Dr. Dietrich discovers evidence of precursor artifacts on the asteroid VGVV-M31-M31 in the Faranou System. "Was this empire -- the First League, as my xenolinguistics expert calls it -- one of the participants in the ancient battle above Procyon II? Further research is needed."

Dr. Fehér, after finishing her paper on Galactic Ambitions, asks her group what they can do about the food "crisis" the UN keeps slipping in and out of.

On Faranou I, Dr. Dietrich discovers an ancient temple. "Was this some sort of religion in the First League?" he asks in his report back to Earth. "Who were these 'Johdees?'"

The pirate base in the Hras system is no more, and its treasures are added to the UN's treasury.

The UN's diplomats are ejected from Turexmian space, and they close their borders. The UN reacts in turn, blocking any Turexmian vessels from entering UN territory. The word "buzzards" becomes a popular slur against the Turexmians, and debates are held over whether to build a "sensor wall" on the border.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Complaints have been made by the populace of our inhabited planets that the UN is focusing too much on space and not paying enough attention on planetside matters. Assembly members figure they can't sit on this problem and start making proposals about what to build.
(Note: Our food production is -0.25/month, meaning pop growth is stopped because the food stockpile is no longer at its cap.)

Well, along with next update's tradition vote I'll add in a vote for what we should demand of the Turexmians in a potential war.

Construction of farms begin on both Earth and Terra Nova. Food production quickly returns to a surplus.

Spider World is now within the UN's borders, but some wonder if the resources the frontier station uses are worth it.

Admiral Lewinson becomes adept at stretching her fleet's supplies.

The Anaconda fleet is refurbished to include more armor. More ships are being built as well.

Dr. Batista begins work on constructing better spaceports, with the possibility of eventually designing spaceports that can hold larger ships than the Anaconda-class.

Upon translating the name of one of the Turexmians' survey ships, Dr. Zhivenkov bursts out into laughter.

President Muwanga begins to become a little more discriminating on nominating candidates for government positions. (This gives us a +1 bonus on new leaders at the cost of a 25% hiring cost increase, but since we are often hitting the Influence cap, I personally don't think it's a big deal.)

Dr. de la Cruz begins research on how to optimize power generation and storage, while Dr. Fehér begins on designing new laboratories dedicated to xenobiological research.

Dr. Dietrich notices an ancient weapons installalation on the tomb world of Maretisda III. "We can refit these to work again," he notes, "if we can ever set foot on this irradiated hellhole."

After researching the fourth planet in the Maretisda system, he adds "Whoever created this planet and the weapons installation would have been like gods."

When visiting Malperion, the Kitsu ambassador states that they would like to enter into a free immigration treaty. It is accepted. Humans who emigrate to Kitsu worlds are warned to duck when going through doorways designed for the shorter Kitsu.

Cleanup of the last few industrial wastelands on Earth begins.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
We've hit the Unity cap again, and we have two Traditions left in Expansion, so we'll adopt the one chosen now and take the final one the next time we hit the cap. Which do we take first:

  • Courier Network, which decreases the effect on Tradition Costs caused by number of planets by 33%; or
  • Reach for the Stars, which will treat costs for new Frontier Outposts and colonies as if they were only half the distance away?

Also, let's start discussion on what we want out of a war with the Buzzards.
