drat, I flew from Orlando to St Augustine and back today. I hear the Massey guys on the radio all the time. I'm mad I didn't detour by Massey Airpark on my way to see the unnecessary downwind firsthand.

Question about airports with pilot-controlled lighting: is there a chance that some airports disable these systems after a certain time of night? On two consecutive flights, at two different airports, I've had trouble activating them. Last night, I know the system was working, because the lights were on as I was approaching the airport, and then turned off, evidently permanently, as I was inspecting the windsock. On both of those flights, when I've returned to my home airport (which uses the exact same type of system once the control tower is closed) the system worked exactly as expected, multiple times (I tested the dimming system, just to make sure I wasn't getting lucky for some reason).

It wasn't a distance thing either, because I was literally over the airport's beacon and I could see the runway.

It's strange, because I don't think I did anything wrong, I tried multiple times, yet I'm still at a loss as to why two separate airports would give me the same issue on two different days. The only thing I can think of is that it was quite late in both cases (night begins at 10:30PM here right now, so these would've both been after 11PM). I've done night landings at both airports in the past, during the winter when night started much earlier. Is there any other thing I could be overlooking?

In my (limited) experience, many of them just suck. The timing to turn them on can end up weird. Someone keys the radio twice and it doesn't flush from their queue fast enough, and now turning them on is offset by a few clicks, etc...

Pilot license finally came in the mail, and the weather this weekend looks like it might actually clear up enough for me to take another flight! I've missed being up in the air these past few weeks.

Well good news, after not flying for a month due to bad weather I still remember how to land! Landings were a little rough, but nothing terrible.

Had a great flight over the weekend, got to fly above clouds for the first time, saw gliders detach from their tow while in the air for the first time, saw skydivers while in the air for the first time, and carried two passengers in the plane for the first time!

Bad news: Flew to a casino, people hogged the craps table the whole time, and didn't win enough to cover the plane rental. :cheeky:

Anyone happen to know how ultralight regulations work when you already have a pilot cert? Do they change at all?

I was watching videos of someone flying a paramotor today, and I was wondering if I had a radio and put proper lighting on it, are you then allowed to fly over congested areas, into ATC controlled airspaces, etc?

An ultralight can fly into controlled airspace with prior authorization from the controllers but you are always restricted to sunrise-sunset according to 103.11(a). Your license has no affect on the limitations on Ultralight flying. The FAA AC 103-7 is a pretty good reference for the requirements of part 103 flight.

I'm pretty sure you have to build an experimental if light aircraft if you want to remove some of the limitations of Ultralight flying.

Thanks for that. I'm not really looking to get around any regulations, I was just curious on if there was any effect from having a license since I couldn't find any info about it.

Anyone around here done a paramotor before? They look incredibly fun, especially with how low you can fly. I imagine they don't do well with crosswind or turbulence though.

Had my first experience with how fast weather can sneak up on you yesterday.

I rented the plane for a few hours to take a friend up and get some practice in, but when we got to the airport it was raining. I figured we'd just sit around and wait it out, and sure enough after about 30 minutes there was a beautiful clear sky to see the sun hanging low and everything shining gold on the ground. We go up in what is practically perfect weather, not even a breeze, and get about 20 minutes of sightseeing in the local area when I notice some low clouds forming directly over my home airport.

I immediately turn to head back, but by the time I get close there is a thick cover of clouds at ~500 feet over the entire area. I debated waiting a bit to see if they would blow over, but given how fast they came in I decided to immediately divert to the executive airport downtown and land before any other bad weather surprises me. After a quick scramble to look up frequencies and punch it into the gps I made it over there and pulled off one of the smoothest landings I've ever done.

Now I'm just feeling dumb for going up after the rain like that, and am hoping the weather clears up at some point today so that I can get the plane home. :/

Yeah, at least my friend says he had a wonderful time and wants to go up again. I don't think he realized anything was "wrong" the entire time, until we had to land somewhere else.

Edit: heading to the airport to try to fly back during a break in these low clouds. Wish me luck.

Weather finally let up and I managed to get the plane back. Everything went smoothly. The exec airport didn't even charge me for staying overnight.

Looking back on it, its probably some of the best flying I've done so far, but it was stressful in the moment. I can breathe easy now though.

Good decision. Also, this is yet another reason why it's a good idea to get an instrument rating.

I definitely plan to get an instrument rating. Was actually working up some cross country time solo while I save up for that next. Wouldn't have helped much in this case though, the GPS on the plane I rented doesn't have its database updated, so its not IFR ready right now.

At least the view yesterday was worth this trouble:

Thanks for the tips guys!

I wasn't on with ATC while I was just in the local area, but as soon as I realized I needed to head to the other airport I listened to the ATIS, then contacted the tower. It was only about 12 miles away by that time, so not a super long flight. I'm pretty comfortable talking to ATC in the air, its the ground frequencies that I need more practice with, they give directions so fast sometimes. My home airport is untowered so I dont get much practice there.

I, at one point, knew out to get frequencies out of the gps, but it would be good to have a review. My main method is my ipad w/foreflight, and a 40 hour backup battery just in case.

There was a wreck at my airport today.

Some dude in a LSA on his first solo didn't correct for the left pull on takeoff and went straight down the embankment on the side of the runway. He got out with no injuries but the plane, brand new with all glass instruments, is totaled.

Is it allowed to land an airplane somewhere that's not specifically a runway? I know if you're in an ultralight you're ok to land in open areas (that arent considered congested), but with my PPL and just in a regular airplane is that something which is allowed?

Don't have any specific plans to do something like this, I was just curious. Say I knew someone who owned a giant field, clear of any obstructions nearby, and I knew it was suitable for a soft field landing, is that something which is allowed or not?

I don't remember seeing anything that allowed or prohibited that kind of thing.

Went flying for the first time in over 4 months last weekend to get my currency back. I don't know what happened in my time off, but something feels like it just "clicked" in that time and I had some of the best landings I've ever done. Super smooth, right on the glide path, touched down on the center line right past the numbers every time, even with a crosswind.

Feels good :)

Pilots are explicitly trained as ‘aircraft managers’ now. Your purpose is to monitor systems and function as redundancy. The pilot is the ‘component’ most likely to fail on any aircraft, but is also the most flexible and adaptable.

Pulling a loop is easy, literally everybody does it in flight school atleast once. What’s difficult is crabbing in a high crosswind with low visibility and a glass cockpit failure.

From the GBS thread about the plane theft. Did I miss the part of flight school where I was meant to do loops? Is that something atp pilots do?

I'm 4 days into my paramotor lessons and did my first flights today. Its every bit as amazing as I had hoped. I'm a bit worn out and bruised up from all the work on the ground beforehand, but actually getting the motor and wing on my back and just running into the air is amazing. Hit some very mild turbulence on a few flights, as the morning was turning into midday and thermals were beginning to form, but never felt uncomfortable or in danger. Also had a motor out and radio out at the same time on my 3rd flight, since I accidentally bumped the motor kill switch while trying to fix my radio. Just came in for a very easy landing. Landing is fairly simple and comfortable, never slid it in on my butt or broke any gear.

Taking off on that thing is the most scary/uncomfortable part. Getting the wing up and under control while trying to stay even on that throttle is going to take a lot of practice before I don't feel like I'm going to faceplant, or fall backwards and break a prop.

Overall, I love it. Just a few more days of training and I'm (hopefully) good to fly on my own.

Two hours before the scheduled start time, my CFI told me that the DPE was running behind on another checkride, and instead of him coming to meet me at my home airport as planned, I would be flying out to meet him at an airport I'd only been to once for a touch and go. :derp:
My CFI had me so ridiculously over-prepared for the maneuvers on our mock rides that the actual experience yesterday was surprisingly quick and painless. And actually I feel like making the solo flight over to the examiner was a pretty great confidence boost once I got in the air.

Congrats! Don't stop flying now, like half the friends I know who got their PPL, keep going as much as you can!

This sounds so awesome. What are the costs?

Lessons were $2500, which seems like the standard rate for them everywhere. I highly recommend them. One of those "you won't know how much you don't know until you take them" situations. Also it gives you a good chance to try it and see how awesome it is before you buy one.

Paramotors cost between $3k-$10k, depending on if you buy new or used, and how nice of one you get. They are 2 stroke engines, so just mix oil in some gas and go. Can use pump gas or avgas.

A wing costs $3k-$5k, again depending on if you buy used or new, and if you want a beginner wing or a fancy wing that is better for acro or cross country flying. Used wings go for around $1k of they don't be much life left. Modern wings last around 400 hours.

Again, I highly recommend just going for the training to get a nice sample of what is like.

That's so badass, I wanna hear about the places you launch from. I'm imagining taking off from public parks but I can't figure out how to easily determine whether local ordinances prohibit that kind of thing.

The advice I got was try it wherever you like, until someone official-looking asks you to stop. Then you can try to get permission after that, but often the park officials don't understand how to give permission for that kind of thing, so it's rare that it happens. If no one tells you to stop you are good.

There are athletic fields right by my house that would be a great spot. If those don't work out I'm considering asking some of the neighbors who have a lot of land of they mind me launching and landing there.

I also might just go to the airport where I rent planes. It's small and untowered, and I should be fine to launch from there. I've seen people launch other types of ultralights there before. If I grab an Aviation radio it should a good spot. There's also a few even smaller grass field airports right by there that could also be a good idea.

Definitely envious Nuggan, I hope in a year or two I'll have enough spare $$$ to consider getting in to this. It seems to be one of the best ways to fly for pure recreation, the equivalent of a back road drive with no real destination in mind, just dicking around seeing the sights.

Tucker is 100% what got me into this. When I first started my lessons the instructors asked what got me into this, and I said "Well, I've been watching some youtube videos..." and they just said "Welp, have to thank Tucker again for another student."

Its great that the community for this is still very small, everyone knows each other. I assume I'll end up meeting him as long as I go to some of they fly-ins.

Here is a video from my first 3 takeoffs/landings, after about 3 days of ground training beforehand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0sehSgqJ-M. By the end of the class I had 30+ flights in and looked much less awkward.
