No, last week was food chat. This week it's you whining about how threads only go sideways when people discuss identity politics without offering a solution. You're also not offering a solution except 'stop discussing'. Go away or tell us a recipe.

Each of the Koch brothers is about $15 billion wealthier than Steve Ballmer. $48.5 billion apiece versus $33.6 billion. The Waltons are probably the only family in the US who are wealthier than the Koch family.

it wont so long as there is excess surplus capital sloshing around looking for investments. this is why uber is worth a hojillion dollars despite being a dumb loving company on every level except their rather simple and extremely replicable ride sharing app. it's like if a company was worth $20 billion because it figured out a new way to deliver pizza to your house. there's just way too much money at the top of the market looking for a place to park itself and grow, and a relative lack of hot startups that actually can make substantial returns

If it's so easy, why are all of the taxi and consumer fleet companies like Enterprise having such trouble keeping up? They didn't just build a ride sharing app, they built a network around it. Their network is bigger than other "critical mass" competitors like Lyft and unsurprisingly their valuation is larger too.

Spergin Morlock

HappyHippo posted:

Because they don't have billions and billions of venture capital to burn through subsidizing rides?

Those investors are literally betting that the ride sharing network their money is building will be worth more in the medium to long term than a similar sized investment into taxi medallions or fleet company shares or what have you. If they're wrong they'll lose money. I'm not saying they're right, just pointing out that they're not throwing millions of dollars at these companies because they just don't have anywhere better to put it...

taxi companies traditionally dont solict investments on the market, unlike uber who is a "technology firm" who keeps making what we in the industry call "incredibly poor decisions" like refusing to adhere to government regulation and corporate espionage

Disruptive companies don't usually follow tradition. It seems to be working for them for the time being. Perhaps some of those investors are hoping to exit their position prior to massive lawsuits and regulatory actions collapsing the company. Sounds like a missed opportunity on the part of the taxi companies though.

Spergin Morlock

HappyHippo posted:

Well I agree on the last point. But the thing to keep in mind is that SV investors are just as irrational and susceptible to hype as the rest of us. Uber's business model doesn't fundamentally change the economics of the underlying business (unlike, say, Amazon), they've literally lost more money than any startup, like $10 billion dollars worth, including like $3 billion last year, and they aren't showing any signs that they can break even, much less ever justify that level of investment. But they've been very, very good at marketing themselves to venture capitalists, which is what matters in terms of investment. The reason taxi companies haven't been able to duplicate their "success" is because they don't have the ability to burn through billions of dollars a year subsidizing rides.

Wait until they've put all the taxi companies out of business. Then they boost prices to bring them back in line with where they were before, and take the profit from the market instead of their former competitors.

e: also they're currently being sued by one of their investors. much success

uber is a bad company and only oral sex providing fanboys don't see the forest for the trees (each tree is a local government they've pissed on)

Are you calling me an Uber fanboy? LOL. I'm not saying they're good people or that they will succeed, just that a lot of investors don't care if they lose money while putting their competitors out of business before jacking the prices back up.

boner confessor posted:

assuming uber lasts that long and lyft or one of the literal dozens of competitors doesn't pick up the pieces
