I have always hated how the Marauder looks and I'm glad that particular version of it no longer exists as far as BattleTech is concerned.

The BattleTech RPG has it too. The little fluff text that comes with is pretty hilarious, along the lines of "Ammo feed malfunction? A Wolfhound doesn't even have that!"

Even before you edited this it's still not good scaling. Six people, give or take, stacked on top of each other should make it up to mid-chest on an Atlas. As it stands you might get all the way to its waist like that. If that. Looking at it some more, they might barely get past the knees.

I feel like that's something that could be at least part-way solved by weighting head hits differently in terms of pilot death. Maybe it takes 12 pilot damage to die, and SRMs do 2 each but LRMs only 1. It'd effectively cut LRM headshots in half, which would probably still leave them somewhere higher in frequency than their TT counterparts thanks to individual missiles.

There's this random fun-fact type thing bouncing around in my head that the CC had almost as many Highlanders as Catapults immediately after the 4SW. That may be more of a commentary on the state of the CCAF post-4SW than the number of Highlanders.

I would actually say the JLN-5C Juliano is a strong contender for Best 'Mech.

For those of you who don't follow 3145 and associated bullshit (which I really enjoy), it's a 4/6 95 ton Assault with three Clan ER Large Lasers, three Clan Medium Pulse Lasers, and four Clan Streak SRM-6s with max (or very near it) armor and enough heat sinks to either fire all the ERLLs or all of the close in weapons (assuming they even fire) and not run into overheat penalties. It is a vicious walking killing machine that averages upwards of 25 hits and 60 tabletop damage per turn. It's faster than and nearly as tough as an Awesome, shoots farther just as hard and twice as tough as a Kintaro with 100% more average missile hits. Its only real weakness is the IS XL Engine (allegedly; we don't have the record sheet for this one yet save that we know it's all Clan-tech weapons) and a proclivity to overheat if you decide to melt someone's face off with both missiles and lasers.

And it's a Marik 'Mech, which makes me very happy.

The Hollander II is peak Steiner, because it has exactly one big gently caress-off gun, that it can also fire while trying to move, knock itself over, deal enough damage to itself to breach its rear torso, and detonate the gun (and itself) in a massive explosion). Kind of like whenever Steiner tries to do something important.

The problem with Clan guns is that it's typically "more damage/range for the same heat" on any comparable platform. ER PPCs, ER Large Lasers, ER Medium Lasers, Large Pulse Lasers, all the major offenders are on that list.

And then you get to Heavy Lasers, which is where some Warrior got tired of being able to out-range his target, and decided that it was poor sportsmanship to reduce the heat to compensate, so the only honorable thing to do was crank the damage/heat knob up to 12. Heavy Lasers would probably be okay and fun and good if they didn't have that bullshit +1 to hit penalty, and the Improved ones that didn't have that penalty didn't also explode for no reason.

The Clans are fine as they stand in 3050: as a big bad for your PCs to have to deal with. I find the whole invasion thing inherently less compelling story wise than the 3rd SW era stuff, but even so if you're running a campaign it really dials up the challenge in a good way. As a GM you are also in a position to dole out salvage just enough to keep your players happy and viable but just slow enough that they're always just behind on the power curve and need to be creative to compensate. I mean, a good 3025 campaign also does the same thing, but you usually have to be a bit more crafty with things like your guys being a merc unit way behind enemy lines dependent on scrounging and hit or run or whatever.

The problems come in when all that poo poo naturally power creeps the gently caress out of everything and advanced IS equipment becomes common enough that it's less "holy poo poo how are we going to deal with this" and more "eh, our crap is slightly worse but not enough to really hurt and oh hey we've got a salvaged Mad Cat anyway."

I would agree with this is BattleTech as a setting hadn't bothered advancing past 3052 or so. But it did, and the Clans couldn't be the deliberately Super-OP bad guys forever, or the question of "why haven't they conquered everything yet?" becomes a lot harder to answer, and combined with the questions "if the Inner Sphere figured out how to build <LosTech> again why doesn't everything use them?" and "Why haven't they salvaged any of this awesome Clan stuff?" don't help.

A large part of it, I think, is that everybody's players want to be the kickass premier Merc units, where downing a single Clan 'Mech means 1) big money for days and 2) your probably-better-than-Clan pilot gets to turn the tables because winning is fun and losing repeatedly generally isn't.

I imagine the general response to it is "but scarcity is dumb!" (which isn't entirely wrong), but that kind of thing is almost wholly taken care of by either the employer demanding full salvage rights (but offering ~85%+ BLC [Battle-Loss Compensation, for the uninitiated]) so you don't get to keep that shiny new ER Medium Laser without getting a breach of contract, or by playing the beleaguered House unit that doesn't get to gently caress off back to Outreach or Galatea for three months after one battle to refit and repair. Even well into the Civil War or Jihad those are both reasonable things when fighting Clan units, and once into the Jihad finding a safe port in a storm becomes a mini-campaign in and of itself.

That's a reasonable bare-bones explanation of it, yes. In general terms, "Unseen" are 'Mechs that originated either from other IPs or from outside development whose images and likeness are no longer used. They're not actually all in copyright hell, though, because a couple were designed for use by FASA but were not commissioned 'in-house', like the Nexus.

"Reseen" is a term I no longer use, but for decades referred to the updated artwork used to represent those units later in the timeline. I prefer "Phoenix" designs, because the FASA rebrand and push for the new artwork was called "Project Phoenix".

Personally, I like to pretend that CT cored 'Mechs aren't actually unsalvageable, just that the modifier to repair that CT internal structure is like +5 or something prohibitively high for in the field ops. You might get to roll boxcars in the field, but more likely you're going to have to take like four days with a decent tech team in a dropship bay at minimum to have a decent chance of repairing it well enough to use. Not gone gone, but 'gone' as far as the current operation/contract cares.

It doesn't matter if they can match the reseen to the old infringing model, because the names didn't change. That's not a difficult task (although apparently it is for the braindead monkeys at Harmony Gold). The names weren't what was infringing anyway. The new models are far different than old lovely anime, so that will get laughed out of court if it ever goes.

I think the true comedy scenario would be if, based on ultimately the license for Battletech being leased from Microsoft, that Microsoft would get involved. Harmony Gold lives off making GBS threads on small time devs that don't really have the funds to fight back. If MS jumped in, Harmony Gold would basically have two options: Drop their suit, weakening all future cash-grab claims, or get obliterated in court by an opponent they can't possibly run out of money.

Now, I don't think that will happen. But it would be hilarious if it did.

The best possible outcome.

It's not, but we're kind of way past the point where that is a worthwhile topic of conversation for this particular game. I mean, I can wish all I want that CoD WWII was a RTS with RPG elements, but it's not, and talking about how much I wish it was another game doesn't really contribute to a discussion of the game as it exists.

We have a really clear idea what the game is going to be at this point. We've played the tactical level battles. We've seen videos of others playing story missions. We have a broad outline of what that story is going to be, and we've even got a fair idea (thanks to concept art etc) of what the actual between-battles game cycle is going to be. There really aren't any surprises left if you've been following the development at all.

We can theory craft our ultimate BT game all we want, but this is the game that got made. Maybe people think that sucks, but at this point it's pretty much just don't buy the game if you don't like it. They were way up front with people about what kind of game they were making during the kickstarter, so I'm not quite sure why anyone who was paying attention back then would be scratching their head at what we got now.

Still a strawman, even if you took a few more minutes to type it. Are you guys even actually reading Zaodai's posts? He doesn't want a different game, he wants his "gently caress off to nowhere and do merc things" story branch which is already a thing to have an acknowledgement message.

That's literally it.

People can make that choice, and it would be neat if the game found a way to acknowledge it somewhere, but from the perspective of game design it is absolutely not something the developers should be providing with any kind of direct encouragement because people are dumb and will ruin the game for themselves no matter how clearly you try to warn them.

Why the gently caress should I care about dumb people ruining the game for themselves?

No really, serious question. "Oh, I shouldn't have done that, let me reload my last save" is not a hard concept to realize. If it's early enough in the campaign, starting a whole new game wouldn't even be that egregious. And if someone is mad enough at something they didn't have to do, that they could very easily and with little effort been told explicitly what would happen, and still got mad enough for it to matter, then why the hell do you want their continued (dumb) patronage?

Strategic Operations is the BattleTech rulebook that includes campaign, maintenance, repair and refit rules, and rules for quirks. Quirks can be positive or negative, and include things like 'Mechs that are easier/harder to pilot, are more/less capable in melee than their actuators suggest, are good at shooting at aircraft, have an extra seat, etc.

Things that are *slightly* different from their construction stats without actually being constructed differently.
