Especially by normies.. back in like 2014, if I looked at say, Twitter, seeing poo poo like 😂 etc was way more rare.. how come it only caught on so recently? I'm pretty sure they existed in Unicode since 2010...

1) Emojis expanded in number because pictograms are actually wow really useful and started proliferating on cellular phones 2) Social Media Companies then went on to allow the use of Emojis in order to better integrate their mobile environments with desktop and non-smartphone computing environments 3) Proliferation kicks in as others follow the Big Social Media suit bam, now they're everywhere

 Back in my day when the first iPhone came out we had to hack it to unlock the software (there was no App Store, you see, you could only use mail, phone, camera, and iTunes). That was the only way to get emoji. We suffered through the possibility of our personal data being stolen or bricking our phones, and now you people just click on the screen!

The widespread use of them in recent years may be partially attributed to people getting tired of breaking up with their SO over implied sarcasm that they mistook for seriousness over text. This may be coming from personal experience.
