Why did SNP lose so many seats? And what's the crash course of the DUP since the fate of the UK relies on them now

Their voters were split between Labour and SNP, and there was a lot of movement from SNP to Tory.

Voters can go from SNP to Tories in 2 years? That's certainly a thought process.

Jeherrin posted:

Because independence turns out to be pretty divisive, and the crash course is that the DUP hate the gays and the sex havers and the Catholics.

Wonderful

Edit: Oh, did you mean it's baffling that voters can do this? Re-reading your post maybe that's what you meant and I apologise for misunderstanding.

Yeah, I was making a snarky comment about tbe voters. Do the SNP and the Tories have anything in common? Its the Obama --> Trump equivalent.

Corbyn doesnt have the numbers to form a left-ish coalition unless he poaches a good number of Tories.

Sinn Fein showing up would be the ultimate chaos option, but Im not sure how that would play with the base. Does massively screwing over UDP/Tories outweigh the NI legitimacy stuff SF always talks about?

See Adequate's post on the last page for why this won't happen. It's within the Sinn Fein constitution to not take their seats and an MP would be expelled from the party if they did it. Short of the government trying to pass internment camps for catholics, SF ain't taking their seats.

I saw that. I was more wondering if this scenario is something the SF bosses daydream about as a What If or still a total non-starter

Its a non starter. SF used to refuse to send candidates to the Irish parliament as they refused to acknowledge its legitimacy and the decision to abandon that policy caused a split and a small hard line splinter faction to break off.

Dissident republicans, those who refuse to accept the good Friday agreement that ended the IRAs armed campaign, are an active force that regularly launch attempted attacks and SF has to run active oppo stuff against them to keep their old hard men in line and stop them drifting due to perceived minimal gains from peace

Voting to end abstention would enrage a lot of old hands and committed republicans and cause a non-insubstantial split

I see. SF coming out of nowhere is still one hell of a thought experiment.

When Parliament opens the Queen delivers a speech written by the government outlining their plan for the coming year in terms of policy and bills, a basic programme of government.

After parliament is open the speech is debated for a couple of days and at the end a largely symbolic vote is taken. If the vote fails its considered that the government lacks the confidence of the house, it does not have the support to proceed with its programme of government and the pm is bound by convention to resign or to go to the queen and recommend she appoint a new prime minister to attempt to form a government

When the Elizabeth finally kicks it, will it become the King's Speech?

I remember reading about this study once, where they basically asked people to choose between two options:
(With spending power remaining the same, etc - also I don't remember the phrasing exactly)

1) You make £100k, everyone else makes £200k
2) You make £50k, but everyone else makes £25k

Most people chose option 2

You can see option 1 in effect in places like San Francisco. All the high earning techbro salaries have massively inflated the CoL to an extreme degree and priced out all of the normal folks. And 50k is more than enough to live comfortably in East Bumfuckshire.
