UKMT is left-wing because those types of opinions tend to fare better in a moderated environment. In a forum with no rules, right-wing thought (both 'ironic' and genuine) tends to flourish, because internet douchebag theory. When it comes to ideology, very few people from the left or the right that I encounter think that the current situation is in any way sustainable, so the question becomes 'what is the best solution to this'. UKMT (correctly I feel) points out that systematic disenfranchisement and inequality is one of the root causes of all the world's ills, and when that is placed up against the admittedly cherished idea of fiscal freedom for the wealthiest in society, which arguably is what lead us to this situation in the first place, the latter doesn't hold much water. When enough people agree with that in a localised space, it forms a consensus, a group of people who are more interested in discussing the nuances within their belief system, rather than relitigating the broad thrusts over and over (which is something I think all of us in this thread are well accustomed to irl). GBS is like a lovely version of the home-counties, expressing much the same view as many of the older folk who have an inherent distrust of anything foreign or different to them. UKMT is like the metaphorical Manchester of SA, good and correct. a neurotic ai fucked around with this message at 09:30 on Jun 1, 2017 |

Couple of tidbits from my friends in the civil service. - Tories reckon they can turn Slough, campaigned hard there. - Someone I know running a polling station feels that too many husbands are 'helping' their wives with their votes, either telling them who to vote for or outright going into the polling booth with them. Makes me pretty angry to think about.

Though I did relish the moment she said "He keeps making me vote for this Goldsmith guy who doesn't seem to win." High youth turnout, already seeing some old prunes calling for the voting age to be increased to 25, citing 'lack of real world experience'. Yes Corbyn.

So, any UKMT regulars headed to Glastonbury for the weekend? I know it's terribly 'rah rah rah' of me but it's basically my holiday this year and I get to see the absolute boy. As an aside, could you imagine Theresa May on the pyramid stage? I think she'd dissolve into a puddle.

Mostly the revolve around the absence of metal bands when you consider how big a promoter of groups like Napalm Death & Carcass that a guy like John Peel was. That said, there's always something worth catching on telly, like last year they had The Family Stone & Funkadelic bands jamming together (without Sly obviously because he's a broken mess) & that was great. This year I'll definitely catch Run the Jewels, Chic, Kate Tempest, Sleaford Mods & the Boy Better Know collective, and assuming it's streamed on the BBC I'd also like to watch Justin Townes Earle & Cabbage Nobody wanted to go download with me I don't tend to touch main stage, but I will for corbs and Radiohead.

Glastonbury gets by despite its huge costs because the artists themselves do it for barely a fraction of their usual fee. Such is the mythos and legendary status of this event. I imagine that wouldn't change under corbyn. And also I wish this meme about everyone here being middle class would die off. Yes, the tickets are expensive, but all of that is put into the festival, the eavises are not making big profits out of it. The financing scheme is £20 per month and it gives you plenty of time to get the money together. There is a poo poo tonne of people here from all walks of life. Barring the posh toffs who live in prebuilt tents and exclusive campsites, everybody is on a similar level here, it is an equaliser and there is something for everyone. The only other complaint is food prices, and I wish there was a way that could be brought under control a bit. But you can bring as much cheap food and drink as you want into the festival, unlike other places that will limit that to force you to buy from vendors.
