Either way that a HS RHP is thought of that highly in the draft, even if his is very good (which by all accounts he is. Also apparently a good SS) doesn't speak highly for the makeup of the rest of the draft class. Just going off of interviews I've heard with Falvey and Levine I think they like the kid from Vandy more, with McKay (?) from Louisville higher up as well. That or they're just smokescreening super hard on the first pick for some dumb reason.

Speaking of the draft, I got a little blindsided by this: https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/874301769530191872 I've been assuming it was between Wright/McKay/Greene for the last like two months
|
# ¿ Jun 12, 2017 17:55 |

Poque posted:What's the rationale behind anybody other than Greene as the top pick, and if not him, why not Kyle Wright? Is it just the scarcity of SS for Lewis and the lefty nature of McKay? The general feelings I get from why Greene wouldn't go #1 are that his non-fastball pitches aren't that good (though obviously they project to be better) and worry about his arm durability, as he's thrown a low amount of innings even for a high schooler because they shut him down early. Also high school RHP and all that. McKay and Wright are college starters so they're closer to the majors and also have higher floors, so to speak. For Lewis the scouting report I read on him projects him out to be great at the plate (every hit/run tool at least a 50) and the only thing keeping him out of the top of a lot of mocks are worries about how he projects as a defender (his arm strength is a question). Said scouting report basically said "if teams aren't worried about the defense then he's a top five pick," so maybe the Twins aren't worried about his defense. There's also the chance that they've already locked in on McKay but are using this rumor to try and get him to agree to a lesser deal so they have more bonus pool available for the 35th and 37th picks, which would allow them to get top 15-20 talent that falls due to bonus demands. As for Kyle Wright, no idea, I thought he's who the Twins were going to take. I somewhat wonder if the Twins are enamored with the possibility of using McKay in a dual role, plus the LHP thing is still a bonus.

Other concerns I read are quality of competition, since Minnesota isn't exactly a hotbed of high school talent. I hope he does well though, I've held a soft spot for the Mariners since the Griffey days.

Julio Cruz posted:It should really be an error according to the rulebook (if... a fly ball falls untouched and, in the scorer’s judgment, the fielder could have handled the ball with ordinary effort, the official scorer shall charge such fielder with an error) but there's no real way of telling who to assign the error to, and you can't give all 4 infielders an error, so it gets ruled a hit. give it to the pitcher imo
