Coal AND a corruption scandal? It's like my birthday.

Ipswich Mayor (and lifelong ALP member) resigns in a bathrobe posted:

Ipswich's long-serving mayor Paul Pisasale has resigned, citing his battle with multiple sclerosis as the reason, one day after the state's crime and corruption watchdog raided the council office.

Dressed in pyjamas and a dressing gown, Mr Pisasale made the announcement at St Andrew's Hospital in Ipswich.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale says there will be "idiots running the country" unless there are clearer rules on electoral donations to encourage people to run for office.

"Now it's my time to look after my health," he told reporters.

Within hours of his announcement, the Crime and Corruption Commission released a statement confirming it had executed a search at Ipswich City Council on Monday.

"The search was related to an ongoing CCC investigation," the commission said.

"As the investigation is ongoing, it is not appropriate for the CCC to comment further."

Deputy mayor Paul Tully becomes the acting mayor for three months until the Electoral Commission Queensland conducts a byelection.

Mr Pisasale was first elected to council in March 1991 and took on the deputy mayor's position in April 2000.

He has been mayor since 2004, retaining office with almost 84 per cent of the vote in the 2016 election.

More recently, Mr Pisasale fronted a Crime and Corruption Commission hearing as part of the watchdog's investigation into the Ipswich, Gold Coast and Moreton Bay council elections.

This probe has since been expanded to the Logan council election.

As Mr Pisasale's resignation came within the first three years of his current term, a byelection to replace him must be held.

A spokeswoman for Local Government Minister Jackie Trad said that byelection would have to be held before August 29, within 12 weeks of Mr Pisasale's resignation.

The timing of that byelection would be a matter for the Electoral Commission of Queensland, she said.

Comment has been sought from the ECQ.

As a super cool and accurate Queensland expert either of the following will happen:

1. ALP Left revolt and a leadership challenge happens with an election being called regardless of result (rumourmill is that Trad hates the gently caress out of Adani)
2. ALP sleepwalks to an election and gets crushed by the LNP and One Nation as Rural QLDers are too "And this is 60 Minutes" to vote for The Greens or something.
3. ALP sleepwalks to an election and narrowly wins somehow causing no change but the environment can get hosed
4. Adani changes their mind or something that Labor looks like a bunch of idiots.

You forgot in 4: "... and the ALP loses the election".

Really the only good possibility to come out of ANY of this, is if they go to an election NOW, before Adani is past the point of no return, narrowly scrape a win, losing only one or two inner city seats to the Greens and maybe three or four to ONP or indies.

Greens winning inner city seats means, frankly, gently caress all with a LNP/ONP government.

Trad won't roll Paluszczuk before an election. I'm a bit concerned that Labor Left is a bit low in experience or talent at the moment. Di Brenni, Miles, Enoch and Fentiman are all first termers, and I think the rest of Cabinet (except Trad) are Right?

I thought I'd avoided personally being involved with the robo-debt fiasco since I haven't ever been on centerlink.

Then my estranged father died. I haven't spoken to him in 7 years, but I went back to Queensland, arranged for cremation ($2400), cleared his flat ($900) and divided up any items of sentiment between me and my siblings (photos, mostly). He had about a grand in the bank but owed 5 grand in personal loans but on presentation of his death certificate the bank closed his accounts and wiped the debt, though they kept the money as well.

Then yesterday I got a letter from Centerlink saying basically "We're sorry for the loss of your father. His income was reported incorrectly in 2012. As the executor of his estate you now owe the government $8400 by July 11th."

Needless to say me and my partner were furious, went straight to Centerlink and fumed until we were put onto the debt recovery people where we essentially told them to go gently caress themselves, we weren't paying back poo poo, and to remove our names from everything to do with the account.

They capitulated, but man, if I already didn't think this government was scummy enough, that kick in the balls really made it feel personal.

Email Rob Stott at Buzzfeed (Rob.Stott@BuzzFeed.com) and get this up. Asher Wolf (whose email addy I don't have) is the freelancer leading the story on this and would be good to touch base with. This is absolutely hosed and needs immediate media attention.

Why on earth is a TV show directly lobbying on TV for a particular government Bill to pass? SURELY, the collapse of Network 10 isn't some immense cartel-like conspiracy to extort media reforms that directly benefit the shareholders of Network 10...? Surely Australian politics isn't THAT corrupt... Surely... surely...

The story is loving awful, but doesn't surprise me one bit given the number of brocialist with a market solution twist dickheads there are clicking like on progressive things these days.

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/re...0724c085a9768e9

I'm not NSW Greens, but the guy is a serial offender. He's been an OB and staffer, and exploited the branch autonomy rule to avoid being booted out. I've personally heard from easily a dozen young women (most of whom have left the Greens because of him and people like him) and there's a string of complaints going back nearly 10 years. I have no idea why NSW has been so bad at responding to this - I have a suspicion that it might be in part because of their factional infighting and the threat of bad press.

And he is definitely not the only one. I know of a number of Young Greens (who are almost all like you describe) who have been serial abusers and sexually harrass many young members, and usually go unpunished. Thankfully, in Queensland at least, those are shamed out of the Party (and in a couple of cases, forced to resign from OB or staffer roles), but there still isn't an institutional response or mandatory reporting/suspension system that it needs.

Bottom line: it's going to be an uphill battle against branch autonomy and anti-centralisation advocates, but National Conference needs to develop and enforce a National Standard for Dispute Resolution and a National Anti-Bullying & Anti-Abuse Code. Chances are though, that they won't because it makes us look bad to admit that a small minority of our members and supporters are misogynists and abusers.

It does my head in that any kind of authority in the Greens thinks its better to let the media drive the bus than turf fuckheads of your own volition and make a values statement along with it.

Oddly, in my experience, it's not authority that drives that, but a large segment of members and supporters who are willing to overlook internal issues for electoral gain. I've seen a couple of major staffing crises where, if this was any other organisation, it would have been dealt with swiftly and relatively competently by OBs, but any efforts to support victims, resolve disputes or punish perpetrators of abuse were torpedoed by members who didn't want public backlash.

It was an official Greens NSW Twitter post but it was pulled down like three hours later after people called them out for naming the victim but not the perpetrator. And everything in the media statement was covering their own asses and rewriting history to make it sound like they acted swiftly and decisively.

He seems to be saying that by wanting equal education for everyone and wanting students who perform poorly to have enough attention to get them through schooling, is resulting in everyone having a mediocre education. Basically arguing that if there are 100 units of teacher time and each unit relates to a fixed improvement in student achievement, but focusing on bringing underachieving students to the median, high achieving students are becoming...less...brilliant? I guess he's simultaneously arguing that most people are idiots and shouldn't go to school, and that (if I'm interpreting his car analogy) those who can afford education should be able to pick the best education for their child? Maybe he's advocating complete privatization of the education sector.

"OL&S Ricky joins Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party posted:

ONE-time Motoring Enthusiast Party Senator Ricky Muir is swapping cars for guns and rods, revealing he will join the Victorian branch of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party.

Mr Muir, whose career in the Federal Senate lasted from 2013 to 2016, said he was now considering a tilt at State Parliament where he would advocate for regional blue collar voters sick of major parties.

The former sawmiller said when deciding whether to put his hand up for public life again, the Andrews Government “failing timber workers in Gippsland was the final straw”.

“If I was to run as a candidate and be pre-selected I would run a no bull campaign and offer Gippsland an alternative candidate who is willing to work with either side of Government in the best interest of the electorate, rather than simply promoting pre-written party lines,” he said.

Mr Muir gained a reputation for speaking honestly about a range of issues during his three years as a senator, and encouraged other novices to follow his lead and give politics a crack.

He also gained headlines for a “car crash” interview on Channel 7 when starting his political career, and for a video in which he was seen throwing kangaroo poo at a friend.

At the time he dismissed the roo poo incident as “people play” in the bush.

In the Victorian Parliament there are already two Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MPs, Jeff Bourman and Daniel Young.

Mr Bourman, who is the Victorian chairman of the party, said he was delighted Mr Muir would join them as he “is passionate about fighting for the future of regional communities in Victoria and for maintaining access to the great outdoors for everyone”.

Mr Bourman said that Mr Muir stood out from the “party hacks and political elite with his ‘every man’ outlook which brought rare common sense and ethics to Australian politics”.

“He is going to be a natural fit for the party and we welcome him aboard,” Mr Bourman said.

In revealing he would run for a state seat, Mr Muir attacked Labor for “pandering to Green ideology” and called the Liberal and National coalition an “unholy alliance”.

Mr Muir said he had not yet decided which seat to run for, but would consider pre-selection options in the coming months.
