Is Zorro the first American superhero in any medium? In terms of publication, he's the earliest one (1919) that occurs to me. What's the dividing line between a pulp hero and a superhero?

It really depends on what you define an American superhero as, but Hugo Hercules predates Zorro by 17 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Hercules

As for pulps, they were defined as large anthology books on lovely paper (not unlike how manga is published in Japan to this day), and could include any number of genres including, I'm sure, superhero stories once those became popular.

Wiki has a list of superhero appearances, with Spring-Heeled Jack being in the 1800s, but I have a hard time including an urban legend put in comics a century later as a superhero.

Given the common 'superheroes as modern myth' argument, it's not unreasonable to take it the other way and include Gilgamesh, Achilles and Cú Chulainn as proto-superheroes.

Lipstick Apathy
There have always been stories about people with "superpowers" but that doesn't make them superheroes.

...

A couple months ago I picked up 100 Marvel trades (a mix of softcover and hardcover, mostly from the last ten years but with a bunch of older stuff mixed in) on a pretty crazy deal. I don't generally buy Marvel but for that price I couldn't pass it up. I wouldn't pay Comixology prices for digital books that I can read on Marvel Unlimited, but there's something about physical media that I love. I think it's the best, if not most convenient, way to read comics. My son has been reading a different book basically every night since then, and I've read some stuff I wouldn't have otherwise read, like a Rogue mini, Secret War, and some terrible Marvel Max stuff.

Anyway today I bought another 45 trades from her for about the same price per book. This group was mostly Fantastic Four stuff, most of which I haven't read. I'm looking forward to digging in to it. I loved Hickman's FF but I never really dug into any other FF stuff after Kirby. I guess this is bragging... I'm just super excited to find deals like this!

I had this stupid idea earlier where there's a remake of The Saint as a movie with Henry Cavill as Simon Templar and it has a post-credits scene where Tom Hiddleston shows up in a bowler hat with an umbrella and says, "Mr Templar? I am from Department S, and I'd like to talk to you about the "Avengers" initiative." :v:

Hugh Jackman would play Jason King.

I remember reading When the wind blows and it being one of the saddest comics I have ever read, so I am wondering what are some of your guys saddest comics you have ever read.

edit: I guess a brief synopsis and why it was so sad might be needed. The story is about an elderly British couple who live in their home. On the radio they hear about a nuclear bomb going off in Britain, and remembering all they learned and read they prepare themselves as best they can to survive the nuclear attack, though being an elderly British couple their understanding of what is going on and what they are doing might be a bit....confusing. The book just follows them as they slowly succumb to radiation poisoning while trying to keep their spirits up and also while they aren't really sure what is going on. So if you want to read a book about an elderly British couple slowly dying while being devoted and loving to each other....well now you can see why it was one of the saddest books I have ever read.

The current saga arc has some interesting stuff, but man it does kind of feel like the first time the story has dragged for me. Part of Saga's charm has always been how it doesn't really conform to cliches about alien races and allows itself to go crazy with possibilities of what's actually out there. But outside of the frank (If you're not caught up this is a big spoiler) abortion and miscarriage discussions and some of the usual charming character moments, it seems like just indulging in their weird impulses in a way that just doesn't seem as purposeful.

Also to be honest, Gwen and Sophie were the characters I was most invested in.

The Great Twist
For saddest, I think Rosalie Lightning is probably on my short list.

It's about the writer and artist losing his 2 or 3 year old daughter and it's really brutal in places. Having just had our first child 2 months ago, I haven't dared to re-read it yet, but I remember a really poignant moment where he's remembering trying to take his daughter to a corn maze and arriving after it closed, so she just played in a metal tub filled with water and some rubber ducks in the parking lot--and it's set up like this memory and then the next panel is really bleak and bitter, just a kind of scribble, and a caption like "She died thinking a corn maze was a metal tub in a parking lot" and you can just feel the anguish.

It's a really powerful depiction of grief.

I can't remember the name but there's this one manga that someone posted in the Touching Panels thread here where a dying dude goes up to the top of a hill in his car to stargaze at the end and lets his dog go. Then he dies peacefully in his sleep but the dog hangs around and (the comic shows the dog's inner monologue) keeps wondering when his master is going to wake up and play with him and Jesus gently caress I'm making myself cry.

When I rewatched Gargoyles a few years ago, I remember being sort of impressed by the episode with Cu Chulainn because they actually managed to give the Irish characters accents that sounded about right for Ulster rather than the usual thing where everyone from Ireland sounds like they're from Cork.

I follow it in trades, and the last one definitely was starting to lose me. Too much negative poo poo happening to the family.

Before I read it I'd heard that it introduced a trans character. I was kinda excited for that, because Saga is usually really good with that kind of thing. But when she shows up she's literally introduced dick first, and the comic didn't seem in any big hurry to give her much characterization or plot relevancy after that
