If anyone hasn't seen Lookwell, take out twenty minutes of your day. It's a strong reminder of just how talented the guy really was.

I think the big misunderstanding films are having with their attempts to recreate the success of the Marvel Universe is that they're neglecting the core premise of a shared superhero comic book: Everything is true. The comic book versions of the DC and Marvel universe is a place where all mythologies, a good deal of public domain fiction, and pretty much every trope you can think of of co-exist. But it's not a fantasy world really. Our world roughly as is also exists in these universes because everything is true. You can literally tell any story in the DC and Marvel Universe with very little limitation. And DC and Marvel haven't quite capitalized that on their films, but it's still there to a degree. As much as Marvel is shat on for having movies that don't have their own identity on an aesthetic level, Thor is still a fantasy film and Winter Solider is a political thriller and Ant Man is a heist movie and Guardians of the Galaxy is a rock space opera. There is still that broad possibility space because once again, you're dealing with a world where everything is true. Trying to create a Universal Horror shared universe is flawed because there's only so far you can take it because it's all just horror or action horror. And it's with characters that don't necessarily compliment each other unless you have Abbot and Costello acting as the connective tissue. Ultimately you could have just been better off trying to make a decent Dracula movie. But also remember that the Marvel Universe is a place where Dracula not only exists but fights vampire-Shaft and they coexist in the same place as Frankenstein and also Godzilla and a character is for all intents and purposes Donald Duck.

The current saga arc has some interesting stuff, but man it does kind of feel like the first time the story has dragged for me. Part of Saga's charm has always been how it doesn't really conform to cliches about alien races and allows itself to go crazy with possibilities of what's actually out there. But outside of the frank (If you're not caught up this is a big spoiler) abortion and miscarriage discussions and some of the usual charming character moments, it seems like just indulging in their weird impulses in a way that just doesn't seem as purposeful. Also to be honest, Gwen and Sophie were the characters I was most invested in. Timeless Appeal fucked around with this message at 00:50 on Jun 30, 2017 |
