 It actually makes sense that they'd exclude one sex of marines as a control measure. You wouldn't want them able to produce marines on their own, or they'd take over. It's like Jurassic Park.

Marines are the best when they're portrayed less like humans and more like self-aware science projects. Humanizing them dilutes the flavor.
