Are you looking at me Senpai?

I'd like to get a pair of prescription sunglasses, John Lennon style. You know, perfect-circle lenses. Rather than going to a bunch of local opticians that may or may not have a brand that may or may not have something like that which may or may not have the material I like or do them in prescription sunglasses, I'm looking into ordering online prescription glasses (pending verifying how I'd do it with my vision plan).

I'd like to hear people's experiences about this. Positive or negative, advice or warnings, whatever you see fit to tell someone on the market would be much appreciated.

My wife orders from Zenni optical, the glasses are cheap and there are a ton of different styles to choose from. The cases and wiping towel you receive seem to be random but are of good quality. She has only broken two glasses that I know of over the last two years. She spent about 50-60 bucks for 4 pairs of glasses shipped. All you need is your Rx to get them.

My boyfriend just got a pair of glasses from Zenni about two months ago. They're great and only cost about 40$ total, including clip on sunglasses. He loves them.

I ordered three pairs from Zenni for ~$70. I think it was one of their sales. Been using them for a year or so and they work great.

Also vouching for Zenni. I got my current glasses from them for 70 bucks and they've been perfect.

The Socialist Workers Party's newspaper proved to be a tough sell to downtown businessmen.
I ordered glasses from Warby Parker a few years ago. The frame needed a little tightening at an optician's shop after they arrived, but otherwise it was a fine experience.

I ordered some prescription sunglasses for my mother from goggles4u and had to get them replaced twice because the lens tint she got was not dark brown as was requested, but orange (like really really orangy) - the 2nd set of replacements was still fairly orangy but by that stage we had pretty much given up on actually getting the colour she wanted.

They were pretty cheap though.

i've gotten both normal glasses and sunglasses from zenni. for the sunglasses, you pick any style you want and during the checkout, you can turn them into sunglasses. for mine, i picked grey with 80% tint and they are like normal sunglasses. you can get different colors and other things like uv blockage stuff. just make sure to get the anti-reflection coating stuff for $4.95 extra otherwise your glasses will be annoying as hell

After wearing glasses since 15, but very rarely changing styles, I got my current two pairs of glasses (same lenses, different frames for a work and home pair) from Glasses Direct. They're the British version of the online placed and all in all it was an easy and very good experience. Paid the price of one decent pair from an Opticians for both my pairs, with some anti-reflective/anti-glare and stratch proof coating.

Website was clear about the limits to lense strenght they could do, how long things take to make and ship, load of deals money off, cheaper second pair, etc.

Has a good selection for home trial and a lot of "regular" styles that I feel Opiticians shops don't have for younger people, because profit margins. Not interest in designer or brand frames though, so I didn't look at those sections. The try before you buy is key with online stuff but I found it so much easier than doing it in a shop with sales people.

Aftet that, final ones arrived quickly, fit great, just like my trial pair and I really can't see myself buying my glasses from an Opticians ever again. Ease, range, service and price are all better online.

Another Zenni haver here. I was always reluctant to try but I love them. They fit great and look great. And it was the only place I was going to get giant gently caress off heart-shaped prescription sunglasses which are my favourite things in the world right now.

I've ordered from Zenni for a few years now and I've always preferred the frames I get there over the ones I get at the eye doctor. Their generic transition lenses aren't the darkest, but they're still worth the money. My husband opts for the sunglasses and you can turn any frame into a pair of sunglasses. He's got a complicated rx , so it costs more, but I think I got him a pair of sunglasses for under $50.

I think we've probably gotten about 10 pairs over the years and the only issue I had was one pair arrived broken, but Zenni ended up fixing that.

In the same vein as the OP, could anyone recommend a site to buy contact lenses online? One that can ship to Canada :canada:

A friend of mine liked Clearly Contacts (they do lenses as well) but I haven't used them myself. They look a little expensive, but I don't know if its because its actually in CAD instead of seeming cheaper when things are listed in USD.

Zenni is great as long as you don't mind ordering a bunch of different stuff to find the cheap crap that works for you, and replacing your glasses annually. The frames are nowhere near what you'll get from a $400 pair of frames at a good optician, but having glasses you never have to give a poo poo because you have five spares at home is amazing.

This is true, and I am definitely okay with it. I've been tempted to order a couple more just because it's fascinating to think I can have different styles for how I'm feeling on a particular day which was unfathomable with normal glasses.

I order direct from giarre.com. Can be a very long wait, and I'm in Europe. But they have a massive range of frames and lens customisation. Their site is garbage, but good non-sale prices. They are a legit b2b business with a small customer facing outlet.

I've used Zenni for about ten years. Doing so, I can order two or three pairs of glasses twice a year for what I would pay for Luxottica-licensed poo poo frames and locally-ground lenses once a year at a retail eyewear shop. Even with very decent vision insurance through work, I end up paying close to four hundred bucks for prescription progressive bifocal sunglasses at a retail shop. I can get the same from Zenni for about 90 bucks (their prices spiked a couple of years ago, it used to be around 65 bucks).

I have ordered five pairs of glasses for my wife and I from Zenni on a Saturday night using the rush shipping ($18 I believe) and had them delivered the next Saturday. Even without the expidited service, I usually get my order delivered to South Florida in ten to 14 days or so. Given the massive savings, I have been able to be a little more adventurous in my choice of frames and have gotten endless compliments on how great they look.

Once in a great while I get a grind that is just a little off - the progressive area isn't even side to side, the axis is off by 10°, etc - but because they're so cheap I just tolerate it and leave those frames for backup use. I could send them back to have them remade but :effort:

What measurements do you need on your prescription? I remember reading about this years ago and there was some measurement that's not always on there. Was it pupillary distance or something else? I'm getting contacts, but an up to date back up pair of glasses would be nice.

When you get a prescription from an eye doc, ask them for a pupilary distance (PD). If you have a prescription without it you can have somebody measure the distance between the middle of your pupils with a ruler (in mm) and use that. Focus on something far away and have your helper look straight at your eye when taking the measurement. Another method is to put on a pair of old glasses and have the helper put a dot over the center of your pupil with a dry erase marker or something that isn't permanent. Measure between the dots. If you use bifocals, the reading PD is a little trickier and should be done by a pro. You can probably go to the eye counter at Costco or somewhere and talk them into doing it for you if you give them the impression you're going to buy glasses from there.

Thanks. I'll be getting an eye exam anyway, so I'll just ask them to put that on there. Apparently Zenni Optical doesn't work with my insurance. It would still fit in the out of network, but I've asked my vision insurance company if any other cheap shops are included.

It looks like a pair from Zenni could just scrape in under the out of network allowance with all of the desired bells and whistles anyway.

Hi there.
I just got prescription sunglasses for 40€ from a European online shop and they're sharper than my two years old ones from the optician for 250€. The frame doesn't seem to be less sturdy either.

I got my prescription from Costco for single vision, but hated the sunglasses they had to offer so I went to Target Optical online and got a replacement pair of a particular Rayban frames I had last year.

They took the prescription fine and the lens are fantastic when they arrived a week later.

This really impressed me because I have an odd vertical prism in my right eye that most places get wrong, so kudos to Target!

I've been wearing Zenni glasses and sunglasses for years. The frames are cheap and tend to break on me every 6 months or so, but I'm really hard on things so YMMV. My frames+lenses cost like $12, so I just buy a ton of them and don't give a gently caress about scratching, breaking, or losing them.

I switched to eyebuydirect for my glasses after zenni kept messing up the grind my lenses. No real reason I went with them over another site; the fact that they were still inexpensive and had photos of models wearing some of their frames for a better idea of fit was enough for me. Nothing but good experiences with them, and the quality of materials and lenses had been excellent.

I generally consider anecdotes about glasses breaking to be at about the same level as I worry about anecdotes about xbox controllers breaking: people who keep breaking them obviously are doing something very, very wrong to them.

I'm not saying I've never broken my glasses - I have twice. And both times I was doing something very very dumb which directly resulted in broken glasses.

I've gotten good pairs of glasses from eyebuydirect, but I found that they tend not to be as durable as the ones you'd get from an optometrist. Like I'd probably break a pair of glasses every few months or so when I had eyebuydirect. To be fair, the glasses are very cheap and the lenses are accurate, it's the durability that's the issue.
