I'm new to 40k. One thing I don't get about the points vs per argument: why do people start from the axiom that point values are correct?

Has there ever been a minutures game where the point values aren't just pulled out of some guys rear end?

Why not just try both and see how the games are, then make a decision based on that? It's completely possible that point values are off and that power is a more accurate representation of in game effectiveness.

Even if power is less accurate overall, it's still possible it could be a better system, even for competitive play. It may enable a metagame with a larger pool of models that are competive, more competive factions, or better match play as a result of less games being predecided due to more models having more options to counter extreme niche builds.

15 Devourer Gaunts & 5 Fleshborer Guants
Exocrine

Spearhead Detachment
Hive Tyrant, Wings, 2x Deathspitters, Monstrous Rending Claws, Toxin Sacs
Malanthrope
Exocrine
Trygon
Trygon

The gaunts all deploy underground with the Trygons and deliver bombs of shooting. Hive Tyrant flys around and messes stuff up. Genestealers charge upfield with Patriarch Escorts. Exocrines sit back being babysat by the malanthrope to allow them to shoot at what they want, and get a bit of protection from shooting themselves. I COULD ambush the genestelears, but I think the odds of getting a bad roll on the chart could bite me hard in a few games, plus, the genestelears are useful for bubblewrapping things turn 1 to prevent turn 1 charges against my exocrines and Hive Tyrant. And with 12 units to deploy, I'm not getting to go first.

Which is one thing I've found, is that without having dedicated transports, other than Tyrannocytes, which I think are overcosted, and require to be in reserve, so you can't stick your whole army in them due to the half your army on the table rule, Tyranids struggle to come in with fewer deployments than the enemy. I've gone second in almost every game I've played. Though it honestly hasn't felt like that much of a handicap, as I also haven't lost a game with them yet. Just makes it so I'm always deploying defensively.

Also, painted up these handsome fellas yesterday.

Those are some nice nids.

I use magnetic transport option and love it, but loving mortarion with his wings is too tall for the one I use. Been trying to figure out a way to get the wings magnetized, but its a nightmare because of how abnormal the joint GW designed for it. After a lot of trial and error, I think I got something that might work, waiting on the magnets I glued inside the body to dry before I test it, but hoping this works.

Just wanted to show this off. I finally finished cutting into Mortarion so that I could get his wings be fully magnetized. I've magnetized stuff before, but this is the first time I've had to completely remove the existing joint and then create my own that would allow it to take a magnet. I was really worried I'd end up ruining the wings/body or both. I chipped the paint on my WIP in a couple places, but the magnet solution is working drat well. Now I can go back to painting him. Biggest issue I had was gluing the magnet into the hole I created for the wing magnet to attach to. Had to guess how deep to go because otherwise id end up getting glue ont he wing magnet and both got stuck. This happened on the first attempt and was a nightmare to correct. The body magnets are slightly not deep enough, but the joint is still pretty good. Ideally would need to file down the depth on the wing magnet, but I tried using some metal files on it and got nowhere.

A question for anyone working on a Mortarion - build him first, or paint in sub-assemblies? Seems like a lot of the armour will be tough to get to with the cloak in place, but on the other hand the cloak apparently ought to go on very early in the process, so there'd be a nightmarish number of bits to paint separately.

If I had to do it over, I'd separate it as follows:
Assemble the legs, cock robe, and chest together into 1 sub-assembly
Arm + pistol
Arm without scythe
Scythe
Head+hood
Wings
rear end robe + flying nurgling on chain
separate nurgling on chain that connects to the main robe
Base

I fully assembled him, minus the scythe, rear end robe, and wings. It was a mistake. It is really hard to paint the armor + cock robe and the inside of the cloak after assembly. Its not impossible, but its just worse than doing it before hand. While there are a lot of steps in his build, he is super easy to put together and everything fits together drat near perfectly so there is not much to worry about doing it in sub-assemblies.

I am a little sad that 40k is being infected more strongly with the taint of Warmachine and Malifaux. Seeing the same named characters in every list to me speaks of a failure of balance, while also eroding any immersion people have with the setting. The fact that the King of Space is constantly getting involved in these tiny conflicts is madness.

I think the 30k system is much stronger here. You can still play with your armies big cool leaders, but it has to be a pretty significant points level and even then you are missing out on taking a "Crazy Tank" (tm) to plop your Primarch down. If named characters are so good they are an auto include that says to me that either they should be restricted in some fashion and/or other HQ options should be better.

Taking the optimal stiff for a serious tournament is fine. It is not too my taste, but it is certainly a valid way to enjoy the hobby. I just feel people should take pride in their Space Mans, and not just be the guys who wash Cawls car while he leads your Forge to glorious victory over Guilliman.

There is nothing wrong with named characters. It's wrong when they are so undercosted that they are auto includes. Just as bad when they are auto includes because there are no viable alternatives. I want to play Mortarion, I don't give a poo poo what people's opinions are on named characters, but it is legitimately BS if all named charters include unwarranted cost reduction. Seems obvious to me that the further they get away from generic MEQ the harder it is to create rules and costs that are appropriate. A lot of the point numbers seem like they are generated using random.org because they don't know any better.

I'm wondering if that's to try make the game 'feel' more like Malifaux where basically every individual is a special character, or just to explain the lack of options int he kits?

It's for trademark, any other reason is secondary.

I've been needing to do a blog post about recasts. Not about buying them, but more about the history, market, quality, and those sorts of things. I'm sure it varies from area to area, but I'd wager that 80% of the models in some places I've played have been from recasters. There are more recasters now than there have ever been, largely due to the popularity of 30k and the failure of finecast.

Without going into nitty gritty specifics, compared to GW prices, how much are people paying percentage wise for recasts that are decent?

Those of you who have got the plastic Mortarion, when you undercoated him what sub-assemblies (if any) did you use? I ask because it looks like there'd be a lot of problems with blocked spray if you fully assembled his torso halves and legs/chest.

I didn't do it this way, but if I did it again, I'd do it this way:
Legs + cock robe + chest
Wings
Arm with gun
Arm without scythe
Scythe
rear end skirt with chains
Random chains
Base

The only part that is really a pain in the rear end is painting the inside of the robe after you attach the arms to the body. It is very difficult (almost impossible) to get a brush in there without getting stuff on the armor. Everything else is nitpicky.

It is so good already to additional options, then you get to double dip on additional CP, and then triple dip on synergy of combining multiple spells/strategems/effects.

I don't have a problem with any of that to be honest. Options are cool and good. I just don't get why aren't there any benefits to a single detachment army, i.e. doubling your starting CP, being allowed to take additional points, guaranteed first turn, basically anything? Why provide additional incentives to the choice that is already best instead of giving them to the choice that needs help?
