Seems to entertain the idea that truth is ultimately unimportant in the face of perception. Could it be that this placating of misinformed voters has contributed to the current post-fact predicament? That was in 2014. I keep trying to evolve as a journalist and have tried to do so since then.
What I was trying to say, albeit it not terribly articulately, is that perception matters LOTS in politics.
We've seen it with the rise of Trump. I get asked ALL THE TIME why "we" (the media) didn't fact-check Trump during the campaign. I always respond the same: We did! All the time!
What that question is really trying to get at is why didn't our fact checks, which regularly found that Trump was misleading or, in some cases, outright lying, didn't change peoples' minds who supported him.
The answer is a) they didn't believe the media and b) they bought into the perception that Trump was selling -- no matter what we did to show that what he was selling wasn't accurate.
So, as a journalist I am trying to make sure we fact check AND make sure we portray the fact that people don't necessarily change their minds based on proven facts.
