My theory is that the particular "look" that casting agents seek in child actors is cute and beatific in children, but turns grotesque when they get older see: Haley Joel Osment, Macaulay Culkin, Jake Lloyd, Frankie Muniz Otoh if you cast kids who look like regular gawky kids, like the Harry Potter kids, they grow up to look normal

tbh i do feel kind of bad for jake lloyd. he was a totally average (i.e.: bad, but who cares) child actor who was in one movie with a toxic fanbase and a ton of problems, and through no real fault of his own he got mountains of hatred poured on him by thousands of mentally damaged 40 year olds. apparently it really hosed him up and he was like on a suicide watch by high school.
