Street Fight Radio is the #1 anarcho-comedy podcast brought to you by @BrettPain and @MurderBryan out of Columbus, Ohio. In their three weekly shows, they tackle spicy hot topics like small business tyrants, nu metal, and the best drugs to use once we as a society cast off the chains of our oppressors and join together in one big party.

More seriously, Brett and Bryan offer commentary on the current state of politics and capitalism in America in a way that hits a 'sweet spot' for many different ideological groups. Their perspective is that of white, working class men in middle America who formerly identified as conservative (hold on, stay with me), allowing for insight and exploration of the inequitable constraints inherent in American society today in a way that is reminiscent to those of us with blue-collar roots, but probably with less racism and more hope. Also refreshing is how both hosts embrace their privilege as white men even in the face of their own struggles, and their call to others with similar privilege to stand up for their female, LGBTQ, PoC, or other marginalized cousins. Having lived at or below the poverty line with their families, and coming from communities with similar experiences, the hosts of Street Fight also give a national voice to the tens of millions of Americans who have had to hustle just to put food on the table and get a roof over their heads. Street Fight's message is ultimately one of solidarity and respect.

Less seriously, the podcast is not grim in tone – definitely less goofy than Chapo Trap House, but they still have their own cast of reoccurring characters and in-jokes. Drugs and having a good time are as common themes as fighting for worker's rights and against racism. They're just two chill dudes hanging out and hoping to spread awareness that caring about other people is cool and good, so light up a joint or get your Kratom and settle in for some Street Fight.

All episodes of Street Fight are free to listen to. But you can support these dudes in continuing the show by signing up as a patron, https://www.patreon.com/streetfightradio. Times are tough right now for half of the Street Fight team. Consider tossing them $5/mo if you like the work they do.

Where's a good place to start with SFR?
Hmm, I'm not sure if there is a 'quintessential' one, or one that would be an ideal introduction, just because their podcast is so casual. It doesn't have the 'serial' aspect of CTH or other pods with repeated name-drops or jokes. I think the best way to get into it would be to search their site for a topic that you're interested in or check out some of the popular ones in the OP. My personal favorite is the MLM/payday loans ep, because Bryan gets into some raw discussion of his wife and him making a personal decision to take out a payday loan so that they could have one dinner out together. It's a powerful first-person look at something a lot of us are lucky enough not to have to experience, but many of us unfortunately do. If you'd like something lighter, they tend to dunk on Mike Rowe fairly frequently which is usually pretty funny!

If you take a listen let us know what you think :)

Another vote for the zine! I've been enjoying both issues that I've gotten so far (and am pretty hype about #5 coming out soon).

I sent Bryan a DM on twitter because I just wanted to tell him how much I like the show and how refreshing it is to hear jobs talked about in such a real way and he messages me back and was very sweet and said I can chat with him anytime. Also Brett followed me back on twitter and that's cool. I like the show a lot.

That's awesome! They are awesome :)

Just got around to listening to the new episode (http://www.streetfightradio.com/show/mixed-use-condos-in-space/). I like their description of the Democrats trying to drown out Republicans screaming their heads off about issues with a desk fan. And I think they are 100% right about people hemming and hawing about single payer health care until they actually have it.

I'm coming around to a harder line about single-payer myself lately. It feels increasingly like every American politician that doesn't endorse single-payer is instead endorsing people dying of preventable issues, or being forced into bankruptcy to pay for care. It just seems with the rapidly increasing inequality in the U.S. (our Gini index is around .5 now IIRC) that it is impossible for the majority of Americans to receive the care that they need in the current system. I guess that's probably the point, but I'm hoping that this is an opportunity to start pushing single-payer as a mainstream issue.

Zines are out! Special treat in this month's mail:

https://twitter.com/MurderBryan/status/880923976637304833

KoRn used to be my favorite band when I was a teenager. I got in late – Issues was my first album – but I think I bought the rest of the back catalogue within the same month and listened to that band pretty much exclusively for five years or so. Then I remember when I started getting in to Slipknot (also late) I thought their self-titled album was the heaviest thing that I had ever heard. I desperately wanted to marry Munky and Joey Jordison, even though one looked like showering was an optional exercise and I was already half a foot taller than the other by 18 :allears:

I still occasionally listen to Got the Life and Surfacing.

Been reading/posting in the Chapo thread for months, no idea why it never occurred to me to look for a Street Fight thread until today(I am dumb).

I found out about Street Fight in a round about way I guess. I started with Chapo, they introduced me to the Street Fight guys.
I've been on the 13/month tier on Patreon for a bit now. Can't beat a podcast who sends you drugs and a zine.

I've decided Street Fight is probably my 2nd favorite podcast these days(Your Mom's House Podcast will always be #1, shame there is no thread here for it I guess?). As a annoyed lefty who grew up in Michigan it's nice hearing some people from my area who aren't total chuds.

Oo enjoy the Kratom while it's legal! I've never heard of Your Mom's House Podcast- what's it like?

Friends, Murder Bryan is getting hammered by the government and is hoping for some support. If you haven't subbed yet consider tossing these very nice good boys $5/month.

If you're in Chicago, run don't walk to get tickets to this awesome show:

There will also be another call-in show this upcoming Sunday, July 30th. I lost the number but I'm sure they will be tweeting about it at some point. Don't be nervous about calling in either, everyone sounded super awkward last time especially with the lag so you are bound to sound incredibly handsome and educated by comparison.

Did anyone read Jeet's article? It was centered on throwing barbs at CTH but he also namedropped (and linked to) Street Fight for some reason. Bryan seemed displeased about this.

I was laughing pretty hard during the most recent episode where they were talking about people feeling scared of trump playing chicken with north korea because they had kids and didnt want to watch them melt or something. The phrasing was pretty hilarious in context of the absurd horror that we're staring into the face of the 1950s but this time with an irate tiny-dicked toddler who knows only spite controlling whether or not we are ended as a species.

The Street Fight/ Chapo Trap House NYC show has been announced! 10/20, patrons got deets sent to their emails. If you're going, I am super jealous of you.

In honor of the current zine's theme, work, what were your most terrible jobs?

I worked as a cashier at a supermarket part-time and absolutely hated it. Standing all of the time, putting up with overly-bitchy or overly-friendly customers, being forced to take an unpaid break (that's bullshit, breaks should be paid– it''s not like I could go home and play videogames during my lunch hour), and my checks were always late. The next year I got upgraded to be the fruit cutter for all of those ready-made fruit things you can buy in the produce section. I got to listen to metal and wield a machete all day, it loving ruled, except for the fact that they keep the back area at freezing levels so that the produce doesn't spoil. This was also my first access to unlimited free coffee and even though it was terrible quality it was so relieving to have 15 minutes of respite when I needed it.

hello it is I the absentee OP

tbqh I am not really a person who enjoys listening to podcasts/talk radio in general, but i'd always have a SF queued up for entertainment on a long plane ride. since i've been doing less of those lately i haven't been listening to this show or anything else really.

but seeing the conversation about bret kinda breaks my heart. i met him and bryan at a show they played in my town years ago, and we had a bit of a true hang since it was in a small city and there were only like 3 other people there when we took them out for beers after. he seems like a genuinely sweet dude who was very excited to talk the hobbies his daughter had gotten into recently. he's also lowkey a hottie so i'm not surprised he's getting all sorts of solicitations now that he's single.

i hope he gets the help he needs to make it through the rough time. and all of yall that are still able to support the show by being patrons, yall are the real MVPs. thanks for funding our sweetie boys.

oh aw :( well if the show was causing damage to their friendship im glad they're making the choice to separate. sometimes it happens, you grow apart from people and you need to move on. wishing them success in whatever comes next and hope that brett continues to heal from whatever he's had going on.

matureaudiencesonly

yea i was flipping through his twitter and ngl still getting some hints of mania off it. spending sprees on mountains of garbage, convinced that every piece from a thrift store is a valuable treasure...kind of worried about him :/

matureaudiencesonly
May 6, 2009

is he planning to use it as his main source of income? i'll be honest, i haven't listened to the show in a while (i just generally tend to burn out on podcasts quickly bc i don't like to listen to people talk at me for long periods of time) so idk if he's said as much there. and on his twitter feed i just see him posting garbage but maybe it's just his mania-driven hobby that he's really into right now?

idk i don't mean to gossip about this dude going through a rough time, i guess parasocial relationships come with some real degree of concern. i also met brett & bryan at a show they did a couple of years ago and spent an hour or so chatting with brett. bryan seems like he'll be fine but i bet it's a heartwrenching situation to find himself in.

aw that's kind of heartbreaking but i get it. probably why bryan is being such a class act about it. he knows his friend is really struggling and doesn't want to put him on blast, but the working relationship isn't functioning at all and he had to get out for his own well being.

ugh my heart absolutely aches for brett.
