Thanks for the catocalypse. I've been in Costa Rica for too many weeks and forgot what one looked like. I've seen a poo poo ton of roaming dogs that beg for food and a new Ford Ranger though. Seeing a 4 door Ranger for the first time broke my mind.

Serious question time, when the hell did brake pads stop coming with wear indicators? Apparently, my wife's 2013 Taurus doesn't have them and neither do any of the aftermarket pads for it. I got to change out pads and front rotors tonight and apparently need to look at those fuckers more often now that I know the only wear indicator involved is rotor replacement time... It just boggles my mind that a safety item like that wouldn't be standard much less manufacturers cheaping out and not adding in a $.02 piece of metal. Did the bean counters just not account for a markup on that poo poo?!? gently caress...

I may end up like darth vader or there may be a mod position open soon. Stay tuned!

Nice! We just ended our 3 week CR trip last Wednesday. We kicked off the trip by going to Manuel Antonio, then up to Tamarindo, over to Monte Verde, up to Arenal, over to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, then back to San Jose. We rented a Toyota Fortuner turbo diesel, it was amazing for the drive up to and back down Monte Verde since it's an unpaved mountain both directions. If you're in a rental, next time you stop at gas stations, I highly recommend the limon flavored chicharrones they were amazing. Which volcano are you heading to?

Well, good luck to you Mr sloth. A few years ago when we came back and there was volcanic activity, the volcano erupted 7 hours before our flight was due to leave which delayed our plane by 14 hours. That was an awesome day at Alajuela airfield since they didn't let us know until we got to the gate ready to head out. $130 in food and pissed off later we were finally on our way to LAX. We arrived at 1:30 am, of course we missed our connecting flight by hours and the gate attendant cheerfully notified us that they had booked us for a flight the following morning at 10:30 am and the terminal is closed so we'd have to just hang out on a curb until 6:00 am. Fortunately, we weren't the only ones in this situation and there was a large uproar so they found it in their hearts to put us up in a room for the night at a nearby hotel. The best part is when I got back to work the day after I got to hear "Oh, you just HAPPENED to get grounded by a volcano huh? In the book of excuses, at least you're original..." Assholes.

California is that but on an infinite multiplier. I'm super glad I'm not doing grad school at UC Berkeley since it was one of the finalists my decision came down to. All the recent bullshit started a few weeks after I would have started and the major bullshit hit when I would have been on campus during a Saturday. I'm not sure about the rest of the states, but CA is the worst of both sides since people are so hard left that they have their heads way up their asses and the right is so hard the other direction that they equally have their heads up their asses.

It also means I might be able to finish school now, since affordable schooling will be within reach.

Affordable schooling is a completely subjective term that depends on your chosen major, you have to look at school in the light of investment vs return. I've worked in academia for a little over a decade and this is the one concept people, especially those in my industry, are completely unaware of. Bad investments include liberal arts, gender studies, anything art/music/theater. Good investments are vocational programs, MBA and not a bachelor's in business, a welding cert is worth it's weight in gold for time/money investment vs return. 1 semester and $500-1000 for the cert program where the instructors/deans are close with people in the industry so it's essentially a feeder program for a $45 an hour union job.

Talk to your supervisor, you'd be surprised at how flexible they are. I finished my bachelors while working ramping up to 24 units the final 2 semesters. Working 40 hours a week, hybrid program (online/face to face), and owning a side business. The last semester my wife was gone to Costa Rica getting hours in for her field and we had 2 kids.

How was your supervisor flexible if you were still pumping out 40/week?

Working 40 hours a week is just exactly that, There are 168 hours in a week, you just need to work 40 of those for full time employment, you're left with 128. You need to sleep, I do 8 hours a night, that takes you down to 72 hours for school/commuting/family per week. Nobody said that it's fun, but it's definitely doable. Think of it as a numbers game.

If it's any consolation, there's no such thing as tuition assistance for graduate degrees, unless the college/university of your choosing is offering anything. That was a factor in me not choosing US Berkeley, they wanted 165k for what I'm currently getting for 70k and the program I'm in is rated #2 in the nation, except Berkeley, of course, has the network base, but I hate living/working in the bay area so it wouldn't have mattered anyway...

My friends fiancee just finished a doctorate in cognitive and information science at UC Merced. He was from out of state and the whole program ended up only being around 30k. They're moving to Boston in the next few weeks because he got an offer for 130k starting. That said, he was full time student so work/student and 2 it's in Merced which is basically the rear end in a top hat of the valley.

Edit: I should probably mention his main focus is robotics and ai. UC Merced has a great ai division with a professor base, at least while he was there, with a few who worked on the Watson project.
