Laundered chinese money is big in the bay area as well and is one part of the lovely housing market there. Part of it is indeed due to ownership and inheritance, but a good chunk is flat out just trying to get money out of china in any way possible to some place that it can't be clawed back at any time by the party. There are other schemes as well to get millions out of china in the face of restrictive government policy like bitcoin and casinos in macau, although I seem to recall the party recently cracked down on gambling related laundering.

I would also speculate that more than half the country is not enthused about this. I would say that probably 30-40% of this country is so disconnected they have no idea it's going on. This is due to ignorance, apathy, disenfranchisement, or any other myriad of reasons. Roughly 50% of the voting population is engaged. Of that, around 20% are diehard republicans. Of them, a number of them aren't too happy about this however they are content enough with winning (tax cuts for the wealthy) that they don't give a gently caress and acquiesce.

Don Jr. when reached for comment about the story just dumped the poo poo. Also the poo poo discussed in those emails is fire, not smoke. I didn't remember it being like that growing up. despite the fact that much of it is of their own creation, the rural white trumpers are suffering right now in a pretty gnarly way. Years and years of being fed dogwhistles have effectively brainwashed a non-trivial number of rural white americans that every fault in our country is because of black people especially obama. The mob is fickle and easily swayed with the right message. It's been going on since the 70s and 80s with the start of right wing radio, but it ramped up big time once there was a black president.

Rich planned on giving all to the red cross, but after around 20k donations, paypal froze his account for potential fraud. The last page or two in the yospos bitcoin thread has a ton of links and screengrabs from places like reddit druggies coming to the realization they've been funding their own criminal investigation. So the alphabay dude got found because he used his personal email with everything. In particular, paypal payments to a pickup artist webforum is how the identified him. From there they tracked him and then when they found him in thailand, nabbed him. But before they arrested him, they made the alphabay server crash. When they cuffed him his laptop was on and unencrypted in his bedroom. He had just logged into the alphabay forums as admin and was logged into the website control panel as admin so the FBI/thai police had full access to everything. All the while Dutch police already had seized the 2nd biggest and was just logging down everyone who migrated over in the past month before locking it down too.

They had undercover officers at the same table he was sitting at. Two of them behind him stage a loud mock argument like a couple fighting. He turns around to look at the noise and they just slide his laptop away from him, scoop him up, and cuff him.
