The black swan event will be the first 35C wet bulb heat wave in a populated area. Everyone will turn on their AC to the max and cause a brown/blackout. Those conditions are not compatible with human life, so we very well could see 1 million+ deaths in a single day.

1 million deaths from 95f heat seems kind of impossible given that people live in hotter places and dont die by that number.

we'll probably see a heatwave that murders a lot of people in an ACless place tho

Tech companies really are incredibly dysfunctional and it's screamingly obvious from the inside, yet there are kool aid drinkers all over the place. I don't comprehend how they can miss it.

My work life is the never-ending story of 100 people failing to achieve in five years what 10 people can do in three, because of constant managerial sabotage. No amount of talent can overcome this level of organisational dysfunction. The sheer absurdity of some of the situations that arise has made me burst out laughing during meetings more than a few times, I do love a dark comedy.

Here's one small dysfunction: cancelling projects when they're at 99% completion. Why would you do this? Because there's a new VP and under the new organisational structure the project doesn't count towards their metrics but to some other VP. They need a success story before they move to their next posting, a success story not burdened by actually existing and having real problems found like the current one. The average project takes 24 months to complete. Reorgs happen every 12-18 months. (to improve efficiency)

Rational self interest baby. Sure that's 50 million dollars down the drain, but it doesn't matter because that was the other guy and he's gone. People will have worked years of their lives on this by the way, only to be told it has all been for nothing. Those 80 hour weeks near the end, the neglected families. As you can imagine this has a nuclear effect on motivation for anyone affected by it more than once. I know of at least one team that has had this happen three times in a row.

Two of the cancelled projects were for internal use by the company itself as parts of other projects, which led to multi-year delays for them. Wow, so efficient!

this isnt unique to tech companies! but its easier to make up a bullshit thing in 1 year than it is to say, completely modify your retail supply chain, because there's no physical logistics to account for in tech, really.
