Does a pardon clear your record of whatever you're being pardoned for or does it just keep you out of jail? Because Sheriff Joe likely won't do any time and if I understand it correctly, pardons don't erase convictions.

So a pardon would be symbolic if anything and wouldn't actually do anything to help Sheriff Joe, assuming he doesn't actually have to get locked up at all, right?

So absolutely Trump will do it because his core base would love it.

I almost want it to happen, because it will show Trump that pardons are cool and good and make people like him, increasing his likelihood of pardoning himself.

It spiraled into working for biker gangs and wandering through the jungle (a notoriously lovely homeless camp under I5 in Seattle) with the one high point being when he went to Nebraska to try to get a truck running in the fall. I think everyone's out of fucks to give for his situation anymore, it's basically the end of the worst-case goon in the well situation at this point.

Yeah it used to be entertaining to watch him keep running various cars through willpower alone but once the meth revelation hit it stopped being funny very rapidly. Someone made a (imo correct) intervention phonecall because it was clear he was in serious poo poo mentally but he just kept on going. Poor guy.

MAD's not necessary to have a reasonably effective deterrent. China's only got 200-300 warheads total and a couple dozen ICBMs - granted, they're thermonuclear vs Hiroshima-style atomic warheads, and they're solid-fueled MIRVed missiles with all of China to hide in, but that's still a vast difference from the 1,000s to 10,000s of warheads that the US and Soviets/Russia fielded.

All you really need for a deterrent is to ensure that the potential cost to an attacker is high enough to remove military action from consideration. Having a good shot at getting a few Fat Man devices into the greater Seoul and Tokyo metro areas with MRBMs and lofted ICBMs would probably be enough to bring a normal Western leader to the table, but the whole rationale surrounding nukes breaks down when there are no rational actors in the room

NZ politics update:

It's hosed.

Our two left-wing parties, Labour and the Greens, have both had senior members resign in the last month. I think it would be charitable to say they're both in total disarray. Labour now have a new leader, a month out from the elections, and the Greens lost one of their two leaders.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11901089

Our current rightwing neowhatever bullshit National party is polling at 44 percent, Labour in the low thirties, and following the resignation, the greens are showing like 8 percent or something.

Thanks to our MMP system, neither can form a government right now.

What they need is the kingmaker, Winston Peters of New Zealand First. He's a crafty old dog and possibly NZ's most gifted politician. He's remained in Parliament as long as I can remember on an ultranationalistic kind of policy, appealing to old people and racists.I honestly don't know which way he's going to jump. He's been massively critical of the National-led government for a long time now, but it would be just like him to jump in with them simply to grab power. NZ First are currently polling near 10 percent, which I think is the highest on record, reflecting the country's dissatisfaction with the status quo.

The country goes to the polls next month, so it'll be interesting to see what winds up happening.

I will laugh forever if Winston demands he be made PM as a condition of forming a coalition.

Oh and in case anyone gives a poo poo, the reason one of NZ's politicians stepped down is because she openly admitted to benefit fraud to the tune of like $50 a week like 20 years ago.
So my country still has some pretty good 'gently caress the poor' instincts going on.

Been a while but I remember 47MJ/L for diesel. You need to remember though this is just the energy of the reaction, providing free hydrogen which is substantially energy denser than diesel.

Sounds like it could be a pretty good breakthrough if it works as they said.

Are there any byproducts from the process other than hydrogen and oxygen? What about from using the hydrogen for energy? If it's the clean source I think it would be, it sounds pretty big. But I'm not a physicist or chemist that understands the details about the process.

I'm impressed by what they've discovered, but remember - energy in = energy out. If it's just a matter of refining aluminium and reducing it to tiny particles, well, it's probably worth doing. If it turns out to get them to that state is massively energy intensive, it becomes less attractive. That's why none of those HHO or whatever they were, HOO? things never worked, because it took more energy to crack the water into hydrogen than you got energy in return. Entropy is a loving bitch.

Or, for something like fossil fuels, where they already exist, you only need to get a better return than pumping it out of the ground, not actually being produced.

Which is why I was wondering about the processing cost of the aluminium - mining it is cheap by comparison.
