I really do need to start doing my homework on importing a TVR Sagaris/Cerberus from the UK and a Turbo Bara Falcon Ute from Australia. Excellent OP and a great read. Also, I will volunteer to assist any Americans wanting to use the exchange rate and grab an already imported car from Canada (especially FD's - given my history).

Once properly molested LHDs eclipse the $25k mark (they're getting close), then it might be worth it if you're going in knowing you're tearing that engine out right away. The sweet spot at the moment is to pick up a project RHD from Canada that someone (everyone) has gotten in over their head on. Those are $8k CDN all day long.

Another pricing data point on the Legacy STi trim wagons. A local Alberta, Canada importer has a 2005 on the lot for $8k CAD all in. It is so very tempting.
